Each fourth hour has an option of making a team. The faculty also make a team. The teams consist of three girls and three boys. They compete among each other for two weeks. Racquetball Team Debuts Nl The Racquetball Team was the newest addition to the long list of activities at Raytown South in '81 For ten weeks team members met at the Blue Ridge Spaulding Racquetball Club to compete against other area high schools on Sunday nights. Mike Mcllroy and Tad Gould were the team co- captains. Mr. Ellis, a Raytown South math teacher, was the sponsor. They were undefeated throughout the sea- son. They became District 4617 cham- pions, and they captured the Confer- ence championship for the second year straight. As the regular season came to a close, their record was 9- 0. The team then went to the State Play-Offs where they stomped Paseo 38-8. The Varsity boys basketball team became Conference Champions again! This is the l5th time out of the past I6 years. The Cards killed Raytown in the first round of Regionals by ll points. The junior varsity basketball team at Raytown South was inexperi- enced and young, but still managed to complete a great year. Although the season started on a down note when they lost to Kansas City Cen- tral in five overtimes, the J.V. players fought hard throughout the sea- son. Another tough loss was dealt by Rockhurst when a shot was hit at the buzzer. This year the team's usual five starters were Vicki Goth, Susan Moore, Sheri Smith, Teresa Ross, and Kris Riddell. The top scorers for the season were Vicki Goth and Teresa Ross. Leading the team with the most rebounds were Susan Moore and Vicki Goh, while the team was led by Sheri Smith with the most steals. They are seniors Jim Ratchford, Scott Brown, Brad Woodworth, Rob Phillips and juniors Jerry Staggs and Dennis Bird. This year's captains were Tom Strader, Greig Chance, and Larry Greenwood. The team finished with a 9-3 dual record, and fourth in the conference. Since the team consisted of only five seniors. this was a respectable record. Doug Fox and John Hooper qualified for state, but neither placed. They perform at all basketball games, pep rallies, and this year at the Fun Run. The band showed their thanks this year to the cheerleaders for good publicity by giving each one a carnation. Bartle Hall and Radisson Muehlebach are just a few examples. This year they sponsoredthe Jazz Band Variety Show held on October 27th for a money making project. The choir does not have a scheduled class and therefore practices before and after school. The Cardinal Chorale performs in all areas of the city. Some of the places they sang were at other schools. at the Mid- land Theatre for the opening and clos- ing of Sugar Babies, and they performed for some retired teachers.
