These growing pains could not be ignored, and in January of 1958, land was purchased and plans laid. Delays came in the form of construction strikes and fund shortages. When finally the building was partially completed and ready for students, another problem presented itself. The most prominent problem facing the school board was the naming of the new high school. Twice the question was put off because the members could not come to a decision. Ideas for naming the school were developed along two different lines--those advocating a historical name and those who favored a traditional name. Several board members felt that the ,school should be named Petter High School. This line of thinking stemmed from the fact that the land had been bought from Sherman and Thelma Fetter and Cecil and Velta Vickers who owned the land jointly. Mr. Fetter's family came here as pioneers in 1868, and he himself lived here until his death in 1960 at the age of ninety-four, He had had several links with the field of education, His son, Everett, now heads the music department at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, and his son-in- law, Morris Stout, once was a member of the Board of Education. Others were in favor of calling the new school Raytown South, carrying forth the tradition set by Southwood Elementary School and South Junior High School. It was Mr. G. D. Collins who consistently upheld this idea and greatly influenced the final decision. While the board was still undecided, however, it was already common practice for the Kansas City Star and the Rayflector to refer to us as Raytown South. The school board, quick to foresee the disadvantages of attending a new school, assured the community that the students would be offered educational opportunities equal to those offered students of Raytown High School. Mr. Collins, again playing a big role in our future, was able to persuade Superintendent Herndon' that we should have our own student council. And so the story of our own beginning is entwined with the concern and initiative of the community in which we live. lt is to this community that we, the Staff, dedicate the 1963 POLARIS. 9 . ...,.....,-- .........f --..,-,......-....-T.....-.....-... ...l14...i......,-.....g....-........1...G..... --....-........a..- --., ........ .fn-L.. ....... ....-L.-L. ,...,,..-.
