These growing pains could not be ignored, and in January of 1958, land was purchased and plans laid. Delays came in the form of construction strikes and fund shortages. When finally the building was partially completed and ready for students, another problem presented itself. The most prominent problem facing the school board was the naming of the new high school. Twice the question was put off because the members could not come to a decision. Ideas for naming the school were developed along two different lines--those advocating a historical name and those who favored a traditional name. Several board members felt that the ,school should be named Petter High School. This line of thinking stemmed from the fact that the land had been bought from Sherman and Thelma Fetter and Cecil and Velta Vickers who owned the land jointly. Mr. Fetter's family came here as pioneers in 1868, and he himself lived here until his death in 1960 at the age of ninety-four, He had had several links with the field of education, His son, Everett, now heads the music department at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, and his son-in- law, Morris Stout, once was a member of the Board of Education. Others were in favor of calling the new school Raytown South, carrying forth the tradition set by Southwood Elementary School and South Junior High School. It was Mr. G. D. Collins who consistently upheld this idea and greatly influenced the final decision. While the board was still undecided, however, it was already common practice for the Kansas City Star and the Rayflector to refer to us as Raytown South. The school board, quick to foresee the disadvantages of attending a new school, assured the community that the students would be offered educational opportunities equal to those offered students of Raytown High School. Mr. Collins, again playing a big role in our future, was able to persuade Superintendent Herndon' that we should have our own student council. And so the story of our own beginning is entwined with the concern and initiative of the community in which we live. lt is to this community that we, the Staff, dedicate the 1963 POLARIS. 9 . ...,.....,-- .........f --..,-,......-....-T.....-.....-... ...l14...i......,-.....g....-........1...G..... --....-........a..- --., ........ .fn-L.. ....... ....-L.-L. ,...,,..-. With the help and guidance of these people, the council has under- taken many projects to better our school. lt sponsored the magazine sale which will provide the money to bring our first foreign exchange student to RSHS next year. The council also has provided the money for the placing of the school crest in the new gym- nasium lobby. The decorating of the school for the Christmas season was handled by the Student Council as Well as the decorating for the other seasons of the year. The exchange of students with other schools in the Kansas City area was done to learn about other school governments and to improve relations between schools. The purpose of this society is to give unquestionable recognition to those stu- dents who have this goal. Requirements for admission to this society are quite rigid scholastically and demand, to a certain extent, qualities of citizenship, leadership, service, and character. High scholarship, which lays. the foundation of this society, is the most concentrat ed area whenhap- plication is desired. However, the devel- opment of worthy. citizenship. and devoted service to one's country, community, and school are equally important. Of .course this refers to the 1962-1963 POLARIS staff who has had to overcome many barriers in putting together the first Raytown South High Yearbook. The POLARIS this year has been very adequately headed by Pat Davis, editor, and Layne Dwyer, assistant editor. Both of these girls as well as the staff were endlessly working to meet a deadline or impatiently waiting for pictures to return so that our book would be complete in the finest way possible. This excerpt taken from the first issue of the paper was written by Editor Steve Taylor and states very well the forganization's purpose and goals. The newspaper, though still in its pioneer- ing stage, is probably the biggest single influence on school spirit. It records our prowess in sports, our scholastic and ar- tistic achievements and awards, and gives detailed accounts of school affairs and ac- tivities. Southern Exposure Staff w ' . The staff consists of Steve Taylor, editor, Barbara Craig, associate editor, Sharon Williams, feature editor, and Steve Wynn and John Laning, sports co-editors. At the head of this group of determined jour- nalists is Mr. Robert Dillon. As sponsor Mr. Dillon sees to it that the paper is run off, that staff members get their as- signments in on time, and that the staff learns the do's and don'ts of journalism. All this is the work of the RSHS Teen Town Council. Under the guidance of the Adult Council and the council's presi- dent, Steve Taylor, Teen Town has become a popular Friday night pastime. The duties of amember of the Teen Town Council include admitting stu- dents, operating the coke concession, and playing records. The twenty-five cent admission charged goes to pay for the records, record player, and operating expenses of the building. Several times during the year a band is provided such as the Bel-Airs, who provided the music for the Christmas Teen Town. Even when the weather was cold they prepared by running in the hall downstairs. They know that they must be in top physical condition .for these meets, because they will be running against the toughest schools in the Kansas City area, including Raytown High School. Their coach, Mr. Craddock, has been doing his best to get the boys in shape, and he hopes that they will do well in the meets, since this is South's first year for having an indoor track team. Later, when it becomes warm enough outside, they will start' training for the outdoor meets that are sure to follow. 107 Burns, . ,- -., . - .,.. - .------V --.. -.,-..-.-,..,..,.-1...........-.-.,....-...1..-..4...,--f.....-.. . .. .,.s-,,V..v ...
