Classes met once a week from 7:30 to 9:00 in the evening for eight Weeks in the fall and eight Weeks in the spring. The program in- cluded fifty-three courses from which to choose. They ranged from typing and short- hand to interior decorating and foreign lan- guages. The majority of the classes were held at the Raytovvn High School. Raytovvn's adult education program ranks as one ofthe largest of its kind in the metropolitan area. During the summer of l964 Raytown High School held its second annual summer school. The program consisted of two three- week semesters which began in early June. Courses ranged from American History and biology to typing and drivers' education. Un- like the past when summer schools were generally designed for those who had failed a needed course, many of the students took courses which could not be included in their Winter schedules. Vocational Training ffers Opportunities Special Education provides training and counseling for students so that they will be able to obtain work. Raytovvn High School introduced the special education course in order to meet the needs of a select group of students. Its curriculum included courses in mathe- matics, English, history, typing, and in- dustrial arts. When the student becomes a junior, he receives training in his chosen Vocational field. During his senior year the student may anticipate a program com- bining a part-time job with academic courses. Thus While getting on-the-job training, the student also obtains academic instruction in areas crucial to job adjustment. For the first time vocational training in auto mechanics and technical drafting were offered to students not college bound, qualifying them for jobs following gradu- ation. New band uniforms, some instruments, and choir collars consti- tute valuable additions to the department. The band, orchestra, choir, and glee club members again participated in district and state music contests for which they could receive music letters. The main purpose of the department is to inspire musical achieve- ment and to develop music talents and skills. Drawing and design problems, paper and crafts, and book work with tests made up the projects which the art student is required to complete each quarter. Through the work of the Art Department, the student gains an appreciation of the arts and necessary back- ground for future art education.
