Max January. ors: Kevin Coyne. ager: Vernon Guile Incy Russback, Ka- History was made at Ray- more-Peculiar this year. Senior, Kevin Coyne be- came the State Champion of the III pound weight ,class at the lA-3A State High School wrestling tour- nament. The tournament was held on February l3-l4. 198I at Columbia, Missouri, and Kevin is the first ath- lete in our school's history to ever win state honors. There were approximately 400 schools represented and there were l6 wrestlers in Kevin's weight class. He pinned three of his four op- ponents and he also posted the state's fastest pin of the tournament in 29 sec- onds. Kevin finished his high school career with an overall record of 77-30. In order for Kevin to get to state. he first had to win his Regional match at But- ler. Mo. Ray-Pec had three other wrestlers who ad- vanced to Regionals. They were Max January. Melvin Bradley. and Kris Pritts. were moved into the Varsity line up their first year out. When asked what he considered to be the highlight of all his wrestling ex- periences. Coach Spalding replied. I think one of the most gratifying things for me was to see everyone work together to make an excellent team. There was great individual work and achievement. All the wrestlers seemed to care about each other by helping out when needed and trying hard to improve each other.
