,VN INNDR Nllilll. A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS OF RAYMONDVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations to the students and sponsor who have made this book possible, You have done it in spite of great difficulties. This is the decade of the forward look. It is the year of Sputnik. Even as these lines are written two man-made satellites are circling the earth at an altitude of several hundred miles and at a speed of several thousand miles per hour. Many of you have seen these objects as they rotated in their orbits around the earth. These satellites reached their orbits through tremendous initial and recurring thrusts of powerful explosive force. They will remain in their orbits so long as their centrifugal force balances gravitational force. You have seen the first step in the conquest of outer space. Perhaps some of you will want to have a part in the continuing conquest. Sputnik is evidence of what a people can do when, laying aside all other consid- erations, they concentrate on a particular job. If totalitarianism can change peasants into spacemen in a half century there is no limit to what free men can do when they are challenged. The invincible power of this country is vested in the self-reliant, dedicated individual working and praying for a better life, adjusting to ever changing circumstances and conditioning himself to the disciplines and adversities of life. These are stimulating times, lt is no time for indifference or panic. It is time for each to recognize that his future success and happiness depends upon 3 powerful initial and a series of recurring motivating forces and a proper balance of the governing forces of life, Devotedly, Superintendent 62 7324
