Class H1story On September Z 1947 forty Freshrnen walked in the door of Raymond High School The class consisted of eighteen girls and twenty two boys Two members of the group left and one was added making a total of thxrty mne This group though timid summoned enough courage to elect officers on October Zlst They chose Donald Hoffman as President Ruth Meradith as Vice President Evelyn Waterman as Secretary and Treasurer Eugene Hitchings as Reporter and Marlene Bockewitz and Bob Erwin as Student Council members The Freshman Class had Gerald Kates jack Herrmann Gene Klump Eugene I-Iitching Gerald Wedekind Bob Kelser Donald Hoffman and Bob Erwin in sports This class also showed an interest in dramatlcs as evidenced by the fact that four of its members part1c1pated in speech contests Evelyn Harper gave a serious reading at the district contest in Vandalra and placed first Evelyn Waterman learned a serlous reading Margaret Uhrig a hurnorous one and Lowell Nell an oration This class was one of the largest Sophomore Classes on record Two parties were held at the Hillsboro skating rink Class officers for the Sophomore Year were President Bob Erwin Vice President Margaret Huber Secretary Treasurer Ruth Meradith Student Council members Marlene Bockewitz and Ross Poggenpohl Again there was a good showmg in athletics Those who took part were Gerald Kates Bob Erwin Maurice Hjort jack Herrman Gene Klump and Ross Poggenpohl Leonard Schum served as manager Evelyn Harper and Helen Bloome gave a good account of themselves 1n Humorous and Dramatic Readings Marlene Bockewitz showed up very well in the vocal section by placing fir st in her d1v1s1on in the State contest Marlene Bockewitz Ruth Meradith and Margaret Huber were also members of the girls quartet As juniors the members of this class won many honors in speech R H S in these events The jumor Class Play Keep Moving was presented in the early fall a Halloween party at the school and a picnic at Taylorville were some of the social affairs on the junior calendar The most important social event was the junior Semor banquet in the Camelia Room of the Frisina Hotel ln Taylorville honoring the 49 ers In Western style Class officers for the junior Year were President Bob Erwin Vice President Marlene Bockewtiz Secretary Treasurer Margaret Huber Student Councll Members Ross Poggenpohl and Gerald Kates The officers of this year s class are President Virginia Monke Vice President Wanda Boehler Secretary Treasurer Evelyn Waterman and Reporter Lucille Van Zant Marlene Bockewitz and Gerald Kates were chosen to serve on the Student Council this year Class sponsors are Mr Mullen and Mr Crum The Semor Class Play this year Melody Madhouse was a great success under the dzrection of Mr Very-l Chausse and Mr Robert jones Outstanding students in speech were Evelyn Harper Evelyn Waterman Helen Bloome and Don Hoffman Helen Bloome cornpeted in the state contest Marlene Bockewitz was most outstanding in vocal work She received first dwlslon rating in the state contest Marlene Bockewitz and Margaret Huber members of the quartet helped it to get first division rating Outstandlng in athletics were Maurice Hjort Bob Erwin Dale Ogden and Gerald Kates Eugene Hitchings Gene Klump and Jim Pope This IS the largest Semor Class ever to graduate from Raymond High School 15 . , . , - .
