L Y' peecfz :Department The speech department of the school was represented m the followmg contests On February 26 the Dlstrxct Speech contest was held at Vtrden I-hgh School The students entered and the1r ratmgs were Phylhs Foster flrst rn both verse speakmg and oratlon Evelyn Waterman second ln humorous readmg and Evelyn Harper hfth tn dramatxc reading These ratings entitled Phyllis Foster and Evelyn Waterman to go to the Sectional meet which was held at Lmcoln There Phyllis recewed thxrd place an oratnon and ninth place tn w er se speakmg Evelyn recelved fourth place in humorous readmg At the C M S Llterary and Music Meet the total amount of pomts for all the speech work was greater than any other school and a trophy was received At the Mid Plams contest at Rochester Evelyn Harper won first place ln dramatic readxng Phyllis Foster second in oratnon and Helen Bloome receu ed fourth ln humorous reading The gurls owe their success to Mrs Edna McConathy thexr coach who devoted so much tune and effort to them ull!! Band The I-hgh School Band received fxrst place ln the Dxstrlct Music Contest at jacksonvnlle Htgh School jacksonvtlle lllxnots After this successful performance the group traveled to Macomb Western Illnnoxs College to parttcxpate in the State Musxc Contest on Aprll 30 to recetve a second d1v1s1on certxflcate Earlxer nn the year the band rated a first dwusxon award at the C M A Music Meet at Ball Township Chorus ln the Dxstrxct Musnc Contest at jacksonville Ilhnons the Girls Chorus took fxrst dwtston after whnch the group advanced to the State Contest to recewe a second dwnsxon certxhcate At the C M S and the Mud Platns Musnc Meets earlner 1n the season the Girls Chorus took ftrst place also Cornet Trno The cornet truo composed of Vxrgmxa Monke Phylhs Foster and Ruta Sutter recewed a second dnvtsnon ratmg m the District Musxc Contest at jacksonvnlle I-hgh School This year was their first year of entry Clarinet Trio Marlyn Gleselung joan Toberman and Patrxcxa Ward members of the clarmet trio recelved honorable mention for thetr participation in the Dxstrxct Musrc Contest Glrls Quartet The gurls quartet participated m the Dxstrtct Musxc Contest and the C M S Muslc Meet The members of the group from left to rxght are Margaret Huber Helen Bloome Marlene Bockewntz and Nancy Hanks 38 K 5 Z' 1 . . c74J.4el'l'lbly WI'0gl'6lI11J On October 18 Reverend Robert S Ke1ser Pastor of the Fourth Presbyterzan Church 1n Sprmgfxeld and h1s seemg eye dog Prue v1s1ted the students and faculty at Raymond Hmgh School Reverend Kelser wlth h1s JOVIBI personahty and Prue w1th her frtendly d1spos1t1on lmmedlately won the hearts of everyone Reverend Ke1ser who learned Bra1lle at home read a poem from a Bra1lle book He gave a very mterestmg talk and Prue demonstrated the thmgs she had been tramed to do as a seemg eye dog On Monday December Z0 Mrs Bertha Schuette teacher at Farmersvllle Hmgh School was guest speaker at Raymond Hzgh School Mrs Schuette spoke fzrst of the var1ous famous places she had v1s1ted m Europe then of I' 1ropean educatzon as compared w1th Amermcan educat1on She descrzbed her V1Slt to H1tler s Berchteresgarden and also of her v1s1t to Swxtzerland durmg Mus1c Festwal Week The hxghlmght of her talk was the descrzptlon of the sad state of affa1rs of the European countrxes The Woman s Glee Club of Greenv1lle College appeared at Raymond I-hgh School on March Z9 at 10 30 a rn The club presented a program of forty fwe mmutes m length The Greenv1lle students were led by themr d1rector Professor Brandt who also sang a vocal solo an! Sclzoof fairly An all school party sponsored by the student council was held on February Z5 The party was opened with a grand march followed by the Texas Schott1sh A sk1t m charge of Mr Mullen and Phylhs Foster called the Rad1o Program followed After the skzt the group dlvzded part playmg cards and games whlle the other group danced Refreshments of xce cream coolues and soda pop were served by the committee The party ended at 10 30 ag rollzer and Sealer y On Nlay Z the student councxl sponsored the Big Brother and S1ster Day whxch was to acquamt the mcommg Freshmen w1th the procedures of school and to afford some entertainment 1.n the form of an all school lunch at noon and an afternoon program 1n the gymnaslum Thtrty seven e1ghth graders attended 40 1 - 1 .
