YB X l After spending our senior year at The Rayen School during the v n International Geophysical Year, we now enter into the space age. Our lives are already being influenced by lGY's conquest of outer space, explorations into Antarctica and the scraping of ocean beds with atomic submarines. It is up to us, the already present future, to reap wisely the benefits of lGY's explorations in order to increase man's knowledge of outer space and of the composition of the earth and sea. Armed with four years of scientific training, we proceed on the roads n wly cut out by IGY. foblhlwwmwl tl tw wr s it iwiwg W A 00 1, wllwi ll vyb WC, ,WM y Qmwf in ,E -fit Page Three l' 34' lp l Dedication Mr. John .I. Benninger Directs Annual Art Staff. Bryna Tamarkin, June Summers, Dolores Tocco, Jack Bursack, Harold Drayton, Reginald Euisey, Aaron Duval, Tom Citizen and Mr. John Benninger. DEDICATION In appreciation of the patience and time sacrificed on the senior yearbook each year by Mr. John J. Benninger in directing the work of the Annual Art Staff, we the Class of 1958 dedicate this annual to Mr. Benninger. Through his constant and efficient co-operation with the Editorial Board, the theme of the Annual is carried out harmoniously between the art and editorial staffs. We are especially grateful to Mr. Benninger for his guidance of the 1958 staff whose task it was to create the art herein related to the theme, The launching of Rayen satellites into the outer sphere of life. ln addition, the 1958 senior class wishes to express its appreciation of the time and effort that Mr. Benninger is sacrificing in painting the 1958 Class Memorial. This historical mural of The Rayen School has been designed and is now being painted by Mr. Benninger on the auditorium corridor walls. Money for the canvas and paints was furnished by the present senior class. Among the an staff members to come under his influence is June Summers who deserves special mention for creating the cover design for the 1958 Annual and several page divisions. eil Page Four 121- Offices Regulate Administration, Public Relations MR. Under the leadership of Harry Mays, they plunged into an atmosphere of social and educational activities. Assisting Harry were Joyce Bardinello, Grace DiFiore and John Iandimarino. Mollie Boyle, Homeroom Council president, was aided by Nancy Clark in her proiects. Gazing through the planetary telescope, we first spot the athletic comet. Seniors leading the football team were All-City Stars Bill Bretz and Reginald Eutsey, closely followed by Carl Pritchard, Henry Stubbs, Ronald Mitchell, Pete Anania, Harry Cohen and Tom Citizen. Sam Fletcher, who made the All-City Team, and Ed Evanko added their profes- sional touch to the basketball team. The Rayen students supporting the games have had their spirits boosted by the cheerleaders, headed by senior Nellie Jo Moses. Lead- ing all girls' athletics was Phyllis O'Hara, who placed first in the senior poll for the athletic honors. The tennis team consisted of five seniors: Bert Freed, David Blumberger, Louis Schmidt, Ken Pickering and Jim Cohen. The track team had one senior, Sam Fletcher. Next come the activities of N.F.L. under the direction of Mr David Howland. Celestial honors should be bestowed upon seniors Tim Heames, Richard Morrison and Jack Resch for their success which enabled them to attend state debate finals. Other outstanding seniors were Shirley Kirkland, Gary Kornspan, Maxine Lowendorf and Linda Friedlob. Gleaming as brightly as a newly launched missile was the Rayen Record Staff under the guidance of Miss Florence Turowski. Helping keep the Record on the right course were Marianne Kopko, Rita Chiandussi and Roberta Friedberg. The business angle skyrocketed to great success under the supervision of Bill Creighton and Monte Friedkin. Mervyn Hollander was elected the first student president of the twenty-- year-old Tri-County Journalism Association, while Marianne Kopko became chapter president of Quill and Scroll. More than twenty-five seniors were initiated into 'this national journalism society. Principal Andrew M. Lindsay was also honored with membership. A Cappella once again had The Whole World in Its Hand as its melodius tones echoed through outer space. Mr. Waldemar A. Nischwitz, famed conductor of the Rayen -:tl Page Thirty-eight lif- choir, was proud of his three senior soloists: Linda Friedlob, soprano, Sandy Welsh, alto, John McBride, bass. The combined efforts of all senior members helped make both concerts soaring hits, however, special attention must be given to those in charge: John Noll, John Rumberg, Nancy Altdoerffer and the soloists mentioned above. Another added attraction in the music orbit was John Rumberg, who pantomined his way to the stars on Rumpus Room, a local weekly TV program. During T957 and 1958 a new constellation was added to the long list of ECA at Rayen: a Future Teachers' Club under the presidency of Lana Shagrin. Special mention should be given to the fact that the theme of the 1958 Annual was originated last spring, long before either the launching of the Russian missile or the American satellite, having been inspired by the International Geophysical year. The T958 seniors are now heading out for courses unknown. Whether they succeed will depend largely upon their own initiative. Those who soar into greater heights will know that their efforts at Rayen were not in vain and will prove to everyone that They all rate in the class of '58. Breaking through the sound barriers, freshman Richard Klivans has already made Boys' Octet. - After shooting for the stars with her baton, Jackie Fossesca steps nimbly before the band with the maiorettes. During the summer of 57 Eddie Friedman, Joel Biren- daum and Dave Traxler took a trip to Valley Forge to participate in the National Scout Jamboree. The football team was hit by a shower of meteorites, Bill Kohut, Tony Vechiarelli and Joe Ballogh. Many freshman cadets have entered dramatics, publications, G.A.A., debate, N.F.L. and Jr. A Cappella. These freshmen are planning on reaching the moon in all their school work and extra-curricular activities before they leave Rayen. eil Page Sixty-six lit- 1 -vii Page Sixty-seven E22- Home Room 315-I Row one: G. Symphonic instrumentation and a symphonic sound were the goals of the Rayen Orchestra under the leadership of Mr. John F. Busch ancl Mr. Alvin Myerovich. Challenges were presented in music such as Rosamunde Overture, Ballet Egyptienne, Sleeping Beauty Waltz, as well as Blue Tango and Fiddle'osophy. Through these the members learned to play and appreciate truly great music. Activities of the orchestra included playing for the Thespian play in November, for the North-East Regional Orchestra in January, for the Thespian play in the spring. Finally they climaxed the year's work with the Spring Concert in March and Commence- ment in June. Among the orchestra's outstanding members are Anita Thornton, Concertmistress, Deena Schlosser and Leslie Ashmore, assistants. Once again the band swept maiestically through nine football games. Continuing in the ionosphere, they marched at a Youngstown University game with less than twenty four hours' notice. Just before game time, the band changed the half-time show to include the letters YU and learned the University's Alma Mater. The best performance of the season was at the Rayen-South game, when the Band outdid itself in precision drill, dance routines and formation. Fighting through magnetic fields they participated in the Visitors' Day Assembly, the City Christmas parade, the annual City-wide teachers' meeting, the band assembly and the district band contest. With stellar technique, band members contributed to the success of the Spring Instrumental Concert in March. Among the outer-planet numbers were Dance of 'the Hours, Sketches in Miniature, Parade March No. l, Donkey Calypso and Blues in the Band. The Clarinet Quartet under the leadership of Nancy Altdoerffer and the Flute Trio under Barbara Freed reached new heights after spending many hours preparing for the district contest at Youngstown University. This year the seniors seemed to be better leaders, having contributed more than usual. They include Nancy Altdoerffer, Milton Fish, Carol Morsch, Charles Reifinger, John Resch, Leonard Shobar and Ida May Taylor. -22-l Page Eighty-two tis Library Council Trains Librarians Left to right: Jeannette Kootz, Mary Lou Dickens, Georgia Adams, Miss Marion M. Maguire, Patricia Lyden, Jacqueline Delloria, Virginia Shirr, Ruth Fowler, Judy Goldstein, Lesley Shaw. The Library Council is made up of a small group of girls who serve the school by working in the library during one period each day. ln addition to delivering permits, keeping attendance and charging out books, they are engaged in a great many other activities that help to keep the library in smooth running order. When books are returned, Council members check them for markings, torn pages or loose bindings before returning them to the shelves. Every member learns to know the parts of the Dewey Decimal System, most useful for our library, and is trained to help pupils locate books and other materials needed. When new books come in, the girls examine them for condition before stamping them with the Margaret Rayen Parmelee Stamp, the identification mark of our library. Then they paste, put in accession slips, date slips and book pockets. Later they try their skill at shellacking the back of the book before it goes into circulation. Council members have helped to get two new sets of encyclopedias and about two hundred other new books ready for circulation, as well as more than a hundred books returned from the bindery. ln addition to the members of the Council, whose names are listed with the picture, the library is indebted to June Fiscus, who volunteered her services during the illness of one of the members. +21 Page Eighty-three l Annual Takes Four-stage Firing Annual Editorial Board Row one: K. Before the Rayen Annual or- bited into the hands of students and teachers, it witnessed a four- stage tiring. First, there was the planning of a theme and cam- paigns surrounding the financing. This was initiated by the Annual Editorial Board under the direction of Miss Florence Turowski. In the second stage, finances were assured through the advertis- ing department under the direction ot Mr. Harold Johnson. Assisting him were Monte Friedkin and Bill Creighton, advertising managers. In this stage the Annual sales depart- ment, directed by Mr. John K. Russ and Mr. Lawrence Gilboy, also set the wheels of income running. ln the third stage, the art department under the direction ot Mr. John Benninger fired away at divisional page creations, according to the theme submitted to them by the Editorial Board. Typists under the direction of Miss Eugenia Sheehan got senior activities lined up and pounded away at all the material being collected and compiled by the Editorial Board. Pictures were shot and processed for engraving. In the final stage, editors-in-chief Rita Chiandussi, Roberta Friedberg and Kay Hart combined pictures, stories, identities and pages to produce the 1958 satellite under the direction of Miss Turowski. Thus the i958 Annual is now a reality. Page Eighty-four lk Main Office Schedules Each Take-off Front row: l. Goldberg, J. Myers, J. Bardinello, J. Flamisch, P. Bureyg row two: C. Heomes, A. Among those serving Civic Hi-Y Day were Bert Freed, principal of the school and John McBride, assistant principal at Hayes School. Dick Walters and Dave Blumberger served at the Board of Education, Bill Creighton and Harry Cohen were in Dr. Carl Soller's office, and Joe Woods was County School Superintendent. Notable, too, was the participation of Yolaso in the city-wide Touchdown Toddle and the Spring Formal. Christmas had a special meaning to all members when they gave a Christmas Party for the Braille Class. This event will always dwell within their hearts and will always leave a happy memory in the minds of all. Starting off the new year, Y-Teens sold informal school stationary to send the president to the State Conference and officers to Y-Teens' Camp. Captained by Phyllis O'Hara, the basketball team showed their skill against different Y-Teen Clubs in the Youngstown district. Special mention is given those elected to Inter-Club Council offices: Nellie Jo Moses, president and Carol D'Amico, secretary. JoAnn Flamisch, vice president of Yolaso Y-Teens, was chosen from all district members to go to the National Y.W.C.A. convention in St. Louis in March. Yolaso enioyed a white elephant sale, interesting movies, a style show and a program by Judo Experts. Next year, Miss Smith hopes for an even greater membership than this year. Under her faithful guidance, much happiness and enjoyment is promised to all those who join in future years. OFFICERS Grace DiFiore .. ...... . ......... President JoAnn Flamisch ...... Carter Gimpers Y-Teens launched their fourth year of activity in the school as they introduced 80 new and old members into the club. The selling of shakers at the football games not only brought out more enthusiasm in the crowd but also proved a very successful club proiect. Among the other projects of Y-Teens were the contribution of favors to a local hospital and the placing of a Christmas tree in the main hall of the school. The annual city-wide Touchdown Toddle plummeted to altitudes as Y-Teens who attended danced to the music of Benny Jones and his orchestra. The successful launching of Gimpers into orbit is attributed to Mrs. Barbara Kuhlins, who is not only an advisor but also a faithful friend of the girls. Gimpers of tomorrow will greatly appreciate her generosity. Judi Corcoran . Monica Guarnieri OFFICERS Kathryn Naples . .. Carol Conway . Page One Hundred Fifteen . . . President Vice President . . . By co-gperating and working together, the members of Junior Achievement pre- pared themselves for the future. Tim Heames, a local senior, was the president of the Achievors' Association of Youngstown. The Achievors' Association consists of representatives from each individual company who discuss their own particular problems. Serving as business sponsors in the work of the companies were many of Youngs- town's leading businessmen. Anita Thornton and Joe Hughes presided over their prospective companies.
