Football The Rayen Tigers started off and ended the 1950 football season with all the fire and zip of a championship squad. However, when victories and losses were computed, the Orange and Black had only a mediocre 4 and 4 record. But in a sense those losses meant very little, when one is able to think back and see that We ended the season with two highly impressive victories over South and Ursuline, both by 19-0 scores. This was the first Rayen team ever to accomplish this feat. In pre-season tryouts, Coach Mike Koma only had a veteran backfield to look forward to. On the line the only first-string veteran of the 1949 cam- paign was all-city end, Frank Mechak. However, a few boys by the names of Larry Iimenez and Martin Martini came along fast. ln the opener the Tigers dumped a fighting North squad 20-7. Then they displayed their greatest defensive prowess in whipping Struthers 8-0. However in his third year at the helm Coach Horn inspired Rayen to third place in the Mahoning Valley Tennis League. Rayen finished very closely behind Warren and South tor third while Ursuline Chaney and Boardman trailed the leaders. Warren with six returning lettermen finished at the top. In the latter part of the year Harold Powell Wilson Freeman and Bill Davidson were selected to compete for district tennis laurels at Akron with the winners going to the state meet at Columbus. Only Davidson advanced to the quarter round where he was defeated by an Akron West star. Even with the absence of Powell Freeman and two-year letterman Phil Davidson, the 1951 squad will boast tive returning lettermen and should end up with a championship team. The returning varsity members are: Bill David- son Ierry Balluck, Ierry Eberhart Dana Fogg and Dave Page.-So to all the valley teams we offer this warning, 'Watch out for Rayen! Their incomparable coach, Ken Pickering, who has been turn- ing out terrific teams for years, really let loose with a corker this time. The squad, which was composed of six boys, four seniors and two sopho- mores, produced Rayen's eighth undefeated golf team. In capturing the City Series, they made it eighteen times out of twenty-three that Rayen has been City Champion. Leading the squad and copping honors all year was Fred Rick Iones, the stunning sophomore sensation. This boy was not only medalist for the season with an average of 78.8, but also ran off with the State individual title, was medalist at the Yankee Run Tourney, also medalist at the District Tourney at Canton, medalist at the Y. D. A. G. A., and won the City Iunior Championship for the second straight year. Enough said? Getting back to the team, the other boys were: Seniors Fred Coil Iohn- son, Bob Pro Burley, Dick Snake Craver, and Sanford Lungs Rock. The sixth boy, who was one of the four regulars, was sophomore Bill Burley. This boy seems destined for a great future. Dickens' Christmas Carol , translated by the students of the third year class, was presented by the members at the annual Christmas party. In the cast were Robert Lipton as Scrooge, Iay Hogan as Bob Crachit, and Lois McIl- wain as Tiny Tim. A map of Germany was presented to the club by a former president, Ernest Rose, who represented last year's German Club. After the business meeting, refreshments were served. A new addition at the March 12th meeting was the German Club Band, which played several German tunes. The second year students gave reports of famous German composers while the first year students gave a play In this skit the students capitalized on the date the first day of spring by show ing high school students celebrating the day by special exercises in school Those first year students taking part were Tom Dixon B111 Katz Sandra Mae Howe Esther Lazar Barbara Iones Ioanne Block Iohn Werning and Ralph Armour Al' C Sl' SY O 911 O EW L U10 ICS XOF I' aGu rdi B ri oz ns 1 :rzar l r e P Rossman E Sha ma k B Tl- m son A V lpert l erriri German Club t Page Eighty nm r . . L. has had many successful years in the past, but Mr. Howland will long remember the personalities and the accomplishments achieved in 1951. Throughout the year, the Rayen group, winning three tour- naments, was one of the few who usually left a tourney in better spirits than they arrived in. Why was this group great? It was great not only because it consisted of a flourishing amount of speaking ability, but because it helped spread the name of Dear Old Rayen throughout the State. Since many coaches and forensic students never have a chance to see Rayen, they judge the school by the few people who represent that school. So, due to the friendliness and the gentlemanly attitude of the boys and girls of our group, Rayen's popularity and prestige has risen continuously. A special round of applause ought to be extended to our president, Alice Swaim. After four years of remarkable work, Alice has finished her high school career among the top ten in the nation in point totals. This is quite an outstanding rating, considering that there are approximately 70,000 members below her in the listing. Olher outstanding graduates include Cynthia Myers and Sally Fried, varsity debaters, Ianice Caldwell, state finalist in oratorical declamation, and Bob Thompson. Among the juniors ready for 1952 competition are Dick Gross and Ronnie Cohen, who, besides winning every debate at the state finals, barely missed qualifying in extemporaneous speaking for the national finals at Los Angeles Don Howland and Marty Oyer are other 1un1ors who can bolster Rayen s team in the coming year Promising students lust beginning their N F L work include Ieanne Cohen Neil Russack Avery Cohen Sandra Gross Beverly Ioffin and Zita Dunn INDLVIDUAL EVENTS CONTESTANTS NFL . . , I 1 I I , . They assist the librarian in many Ways, such as checking attendance, prepar- ing books for circulation, and charging books in and out. In the gymnasium, the library, and the offices, student leaders assume a prominent part. When an assembly is held, when the day's duties are 'taken up, whether in the nurse's room, in the promotion of visual education, or in the main busi- ness of the school, there we find students carrying out important duties.
