The span truth vor xxw APRIL, 1923 No. 1 The Twist-Twirl .N ROM the s ort Jaffe of the Morning Sun, these head- ,A up P 1 e, 5 fjjl, lines were devoured by jimmy Grogan: 1 XNonder Mascot of Giants, p Pitches Ball Like james, Ownerand 'Mystery Man'. Across from this was a picture of the Mystery Man , and as jimmy looked he wondered and wondered who hc was. No greater wonder was being displayed by a man across the aisle, because, he also had the sport page, but the one of the Post and was reading. . 'Mystery Man', Owner of Giants, has peculiar twist, duplicated by mascot of Giants, who, it is said, never saw owner. ' , just then he was interrupted by a healthy tug on his sleeve, and a voice, demanding, Did you ever- VVhy, who are you, sir P The man and the boy stared deliberately at one another, because they looked so much alike and acted in the same way. One would have had to look at one and then the other, to find out which was which. The only difference was that one was younger than the other. The strained silence was broken by the older man, demanding of Jimmy, VVell, now, I think you might be answering that question yourself, my young sir. it l'm Jimmy Grogan, mascot of the Giants, sir,-and you ? he added, after his proud display of this fact. 'Tin-james,-XVilliam James, the owner of the Giants, he quietly answered. Ah go on, you're kidding me, sir,-but are you really the owner? he fearfully continued in an awed 'voice. . I suppose I am, at least that's what Shavessey, the mana- er, calls me, he answered smilinfrlv. b ., Come on over and gettthis straightened out, because I'm ' 425

426 Ghz Bagan Return anxious to know you, invited Jimmy. But first read this, he added after second thought. I'11 exchange with you, I thinkf' said Bill James, and offered his paper. to jimmy. Then, at last, the silence was broken by both exclaiming, W'here did you learn the 'twist- twirl'? The car vibrated with the laughter of the strangely acquainted pair. . L After much persuasion, jimmy told his story. Mother and dad were rich at one time, but through sickness and bills, the money went. Wfhen I was five, my father took fever, and while still delirious went away, when no one was watching him. Mother tried to support us, but took ill and died-then I sold papers and played baseball with the other 'newsies' on the lot. NVhen I was eleven, I saw a man watch us play, every day for a week, and then one day he came and told me to go to the Giants' Club, and ask for Mr. Shanessey. I did, and here I am. Ch, you asked me where I got the 'twist-twirl', well my daddy taught me that before he went away. I kept the practice up, and that's why, I guess, they wrote that article about me,', he finished. Now, sir, your story, if you please, he added wistfully. ' ii Bill James, the owner, began his tale of happenings . 'i0ne day I was playing baseball on a hired team and a man came up and said I was a wonder, and asked me where I learned that peculiar throw. I said I didn't know,iI always played that way. After a while he gave me a job on his team, and I steadily climbed until I bought him out, and here I am, he laughingly finished. But how did you happen to get a position there, and why are you called the 'Mystery Maxi? persisted jimmy. I don't know. 'My life's a blank up to there-but your tale straightens it out, aided with your appearance, your twirl- twist, and, well, all of you, boyg he looked at Jimmy as if he expected something. - And then Daddy ! Boy V' And the curtain goes down as far as they were concerned for a while. But today jimmy is known as that envied mystery man's son . And I wish to say thae twist-twirl did everything as far as they are concerned. Florence O'NeilI, '24.
