B. Ray Track Team, was almost a banner year because we were very close to winning the State 2 A Championship. The fine team started the season with a good margin win in the Border Olympics and continued to win most of the meets throughout the season. The Texans won the District Championship with an overwhelming majority of the points, and did the same in the Regional Meet at Kingsville. The team probably reached the peak on Saturday, May 2, one week before the State meet when it defeated the field of the better teams of the state in the San Antonio Invitation Track and Field Meet. The Texan sprint relay team won the state in that event for the second straight year and was defeated only once during the i953 season, and that being at home by a fine Lamar High School sprint' relay team which ran second to the Texans in most of the maior meets of the season. The team was well balanced having point makers in both field and running events, and was composed of boys from the sopho- more, iunior, and senior classes. The outstanding point makers of the team were Dick Bowen, a fine sprinter, James Charnquist, an all-around field man, and a host of good sprinters, hurdlers, quarter-milers, and field men. Although we will lose several fine athletes from this group, the nucleus ofa good l954 team will be left. , , A .Elf-E. 1.3. 14.1 if 'ff' LY EY EY EEA A Y Y I A: , ,H F' I I Emi .Wm 3' E W E? The Texans were defeated in the first round of the play-offs, l3-4 by Poly Tech of Fort Worth, the team that won the state champion ship. During the regular season the Texans compiled an excellent record of fifteen wins and two losses, each loss by only one run. The Texans won 'l0 games and lost one in non-district play. ln district games, the Texans won three and lost one, giving them the right to meet McAllen, whom they defeated in two straight games, forthe bi-district crown.
