BEHIND EVERY GREAT GUY THERE’S A GAL!” Behind every great guy, there stands a great woman. In R. H. S. the feminine complement to the Outlaw athletics is composed of the twirlers and the flag twirlers. The added enthusiasm and skill of the troups serve to boost the Mighty Outlaws on to victory. Both a privilege and a pleasure, these activities provide many girls with an opportunity to represent Rawlins High School. As an active part of the Band the twirlers attended Band Day in Laramie last fall. The twirlers led the R.H.S. Band in half-time entertainment for all the home games. Basketball season grants the girls excellent opportunities to devise some really clever routines for the enjoyment of gymnasium audiences. Twirlers From left to right. Top row: Nancy Ulibarri. R.H.S. owes a big vote of thanks to the five varsity and three J.V. cheerleaders who, as they hollered their way through the 68-69 sports season, kept our school spirit high. Faithfully following the teams, they helped cheer the Outlaws on to victory. The varsity Cheerleaders represented R.H.S. during football, basketball, and wrestling seasons. Their overwhelming enthusiasm inspired the teams at the S.W.A.C. Wrestling Tournament in Rawlins and at the District Basketball Tournament in Cheyenne. Although they saw many heart-breaking games, they kept up the hard work and determination. R.H.S. congratulates the cheerleaders on a great job well done! SR. Distributive Education is a vocational and educational program taught in the high school in the fields of marketing and distribution where a student receives part of his training in class and part on his job. Distributive Education, like a business, is judged by its end product--being the student. The student learns the fundamentals of our free enterprise system and then applies them on his job. Toward the end of the semester, each student prepares himself for the upcoming State Leadership Conference where students from around the state compete in different areas in marketing. Rawlins DECA Club had its share of the winnings coming home as third in the state. Steve Madsen, chairman of the Chapter of the year, received this award. Walter Miller was the outstanding student in the Oil Industry receiving first place which enabled him to attend the National Leadership Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Sharon Muir received a second place in Department Store Merchandising and went as a delegate to the Conference. Rawlins also received three third place trophies beginning with Carla Cole, chairman of Creative Marketing Project, in Creative Marketing; Jeanine Neuman in Variety Store Merchandising and Nancy Sapp in Department Store Merchandising. Their victims were Wheatland (33-7) and Craig (25-7). Then injuries, causing 8 to 10 regulars to miss games, forced the Outlaws to play their hustling, but inexperienced second stringers. The Outlaws lost their next six games to Cheyenne East, Evanston, Cheyenne Central, Riverton, Laramie, and Caspar. The team came alive again in the last game of the season. Our rivals, the Rock Springs Tigers, felt the pressure as the Outlaws fought strongly to the very end. In the last 3 minutes of the game, the score tied, the Tigers scored a touchdown, winning the game (20-13). All in all, the Outlaws had a very successful season, in that, the younger players gained some very valuable experience. 130 Grrreat Big Outlaws Top Row from left to right: Gary Vivion, Dick Pate, Dennis Michie, Roy Cruz, Charles Hakala, Dennis Ross, Mike Clarke, Mike Grubb, Gordon Shumate, Randy Whitehead, Ricky Cappozzoli, Mike Chapman, Neil Forbes. After an opening game slaughter at the hands of University Prep, the Outlaws journeyed to Craig Colorado where they defeated the Bulldogs. The Outlaws then moved westward where they were defeated by Evanston. The following evening the Outlaws turned the tables by winning that game with a 10 point lead. The Outlaws opened their conference season against the Cheyenne Indians and pulled a mild upset by defeating the Indians. Next the Casper Mustangs barely defeated the Outlaws. The state champions, the Laramie Plainsmen, beat the Outlaws by a mere 6 points. The Cheyenne East Thunderbirds were the Outlaws' next victims as Rawlins easily won. The Green River Wolves' return match was won by Rawlins. In a game that will long be remembered, the Rock Springs Tigers defeated the Outlaws with the winning point coming after the buzzer rang. Rawlins won their next two games against Kelley Walsh and Craig quite easily. A heartbreaker came when the Outlaws lost to the T-Birds. The Outlaws came back the next day winning against Cheyenne Central. The Outlaws then hit a 4 game losing streak against Natrona, Evanston, Laramie and Rock Springs. In district tournament, the Outlaws upset the Tigers, but lost their second round to the Laramie Plainsmen. Next the weary Outlaws took on Cheyenne East where they led until the end of the 3rd quarter; then they ran out of gas and were finally defeated. Steal it 134 135 Go Mike! The Outlaws had the pleasure of hosting District Wrestling Tournament at the Rawlins High Gym. Vern Bellamy placed second at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. Third place honors went to Stan Watson and Gilbert Mascarenas while fourth place honors went to Charles Hakala, Floyd Martinez, and Mark Miller. Rawlins' outstanding wrestlers this year were: Stan Watson, who won the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Year Award; Gilbert Mascarenas who went undefeated in fourteen matches, which is a school record; and Vern Bellamy, Outlaw 154-pound Junior who took the highest Rawlins place in District. State Tournament this year proved to be too rugged for Rawlins to place in, but there’s always next year. Who will be the FIRST Outlaw from Rawlins to take State? Frosh Back Row, L. to R.: Cary Bell, Randy Robinson; Bottom Row: Willy Boggs, Mike Ulibarri. Not pictured, John Hackett. Rawlins traveled to Riverton to break in the 1969 track season. Since Rawlins had only four participants in this meet you can see why they failed to place. Rawlins, however, made a better showing at Cheyenne the following week as Mark Manly placed third in the discus and Neal Forbes placed fifth in the high jump. Rawlins trackmen placed fourth in the Craig invitational tourney April 26, despite the cold weather. Neal Forbes contributed ten points for the Outlaws as he took first in the high jump, third in the broad jump, and fifth in the triple jump. Other first places for Rawlins came, as Steve Sun ran the Weightmen's hundred in 11.1 seconds while the Rawlins mile relay team consisting of Sun, Gene Carrico, Dave Walker and Dick Thomson won first with a time of 3:46. Looks Pretty Tough. Jack Argyle placed 5th in the hundred yard dash while Thomson also crossed the finish line in the top five. John Hackett, Rawlins Freshman weightman, set a meet record throwing the discus 122 feet. Traveling to Lander the following week, it was Neal Forbes and Mark Manly who earned the most points for Rawlins as Mark took second in the varsity discus and Neal took fifth in the high jump and triple jump. John Hackett again led the Frosh as he released the discus 126 feet. 'Fly' CONGRATULATIONS to the CLASS of 1969!! Roujllns Hotionol Bonk Does Waiting in Line Try Your Patience?
