THE 1967 ROUND-UP Editor: Business Editors: Lynda Kelly Bill Higley Junior Editor: Howard Logan Susan Ogburn Published Annually By The Rawlins High School Annual Staff Rawlins, Wyoming MEMORIES To some of you, this book is the first look at high school life. To others, it is only the completion of another school year. But to some, it will be the last and closing chapter to a life at high school never to be forgotten. As we depart from high school and go out into a new life, there will always be that pause of unforgotten memories at Rawlins High School. These memories are a past, living still in heart and mind; although these events may never occur again, they will live forever to be recalled in years to come--to be reconsidered and re-evaluated in price paid and values received. This book is filled with memories of the past--a sign and hope of the future through its meaning of an educational system free and fruitful. As we look through this book, we will find that it is a symbol of our life at RHS--the hopes, dreams and disappointments we shared--and will remember many years from now when we leaf through the pages of the 1967 Round-Up. We will remember these treasures of memories—the teachers with their tests, the excitement and activity of Outlaw Day the rousing tournaments, the thrill of formal dances, and the fun that was shared in the various organizations. And so, we hand you this memory of your high school life. We only ask you to be proud to look back on RHS as your school. 2 The Round-Up Staff The highlight of this year's assemblies was having Miss America of 1959, Miss Marilyn Van Derbur, as a speaker. Our student body president, Audrey Sullins, met her at Camp Chealey and asked her if she would speak to us. She received a several minute standing ovation for her excellent speech. Pictured is Audrey and Miss Van Derbur. Student Council takes as a project every year to decorate the Christmas tree for the students. The juniors were right behind them in third place and the sophomores brought up the rear with fourth place. All the floats entailed alot of hard work, but everyone made it on time for the parade. This year the results of the judging was not announced until half time of the football game while the floats paraded around the field. This kept the suspense up until the last minute and worked very well. These students were selected on the basis of their character, leadership, scholarship, and service. The purpose of Girls and Boys State is to enable the students to learn more about the actual conducting of government while at the same time demonstrating the need of group efforts. Girls’ State and Boys' State is sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. Girls State 1966 was held on the University of Wyoming Campus. Boys' State 1966 was held in Douglas. 51 STUDENTS TO SWEDEN Carol Johnson Joe Kaspar The Rotary Club sponsored two Rawlins High students to go to Sweden as foreign exchange students this year. Carol Johnson lived with three different families in the town of Bromolla and Joe Kaspar lived with three different families in the two towns of Eksjo and Bruzaholm. The school they attended is classified almost to the same line as our junior colleges. They had to take exams to qualify and they each held eleven subjects. They are graded by a test that is given to them at the end of each grading period, and this test makes up their entire grade. They toured most of Sweden and parts of Denmark. They also enjoyed a few ski trips. Carol and Joe returned in July from their unforgettable and memorable trip to Sweden. SING OUT TRAVELER Sally Rogers was a member of the Sing Out cast for the first semester of this school year. Sing Out deals with moral rearmament, and one of their duties was to serve as good will ambassadors for the LJ.S. They performed before many foreign dignitaries in the countries of Puerto Rico, Panama, Jamaica, Venezuela, and Mexico. Out of 150 members there were 45 high school students within the cast. They had to study whenever they had a chance between performances and traveling. Sally came home in December to finish out her school year and graduate with her friends. 52 Sally Rogers JUNIOR CLASS ft For a great year dial 68 . The Band then sparked its concert season by presenting a fall concert with the Concert Choir and also one with the Junior High Band. The spring witnessed a concert of the Grade School Band and the High School Band. In May it journeyed to Green River for the Annual District Music Festival where the Band received an excellent rating. A new organization was formed within the Band. The Wind Ensemble also received a rating of excellent. The individual effort was outstanding as the ensembles and solos brought back many superiors and excellents . The Rawlins High School Chorus, under the direction of John Carlson, again completed a successful year. The year consisted of the organization of a new group called J. C.'s Staff, who performed for various clubs throughout the year, a Fall concert, a Christmas assembly and concert with the band, various interschools during the year, a good representation at All-State, and a Spring concert. In March, the chorus produced its annual operetta, which, this year, was Annie Get Your Gun. The production proved to be extremely popular with a most attentive audience. This, again, turned out to be one of the highlights of the school year. Music festival came in April for the Chorus. Here they received excellent ratings from the judges, and J. C.'s Staff was selected as one of the outstanding groups attending. To finish the year off, the Senior members of choir sang at their graduation ceremony. It is the desire of all RHS fans that the team of next year and succeeding years can equal or better the records set by this year's team. Ending with an 8-13 record, the team went through a number of hard-fought games which their scores do not reveal. Regional tourney was held in Rawlins this year, but, still, the home town team seemed to have the world against them, not qualifying for the state tourney. High scoring man for the Outlaws this season was Del Dixon. We may not have been the state champs this year, but one thing can be said about that--wait until next year! The Outlaws won two first places at track meets this year and two seconds. After winning first place in the Green River Invitational, the tracksters journeyed to Douglas where they garnered 58 1 2 points and first place. Highlighting the season was the Outlaws' taking fourth place in the Southern Division Class AA Conference track meet. At this meet Bob Clingman tied for first in the high jump, but he was awarded second because he had more misses than his opponent. Del Dixon and Mark Helwick won first and second in the discus.
