Faithfully following the teams they hope to cheer the outlaws on to Victory. At the same time they represented R.H.S. in the best manner possible. Although they saw many heart-breaking games, they kept up the hard work and determination. Everyone that has ever had journalism, must remember the old axiom about the five W’s and the H. This year, the journalism class attempted to add another W, WOW. Journalists are supposed to be able to write news with a flair for their reader, give the reader something new, make the story interesting. According to Mr. Nelson, Outlaw Corral Adviser, We tried to put some WOW into our stories, whether we succeeded or not is debatable. Perhaps the highlight of the jouranlism year was the Christmas edition which contained creative writing material submitted by members of the Journalism II class. The class produced nine papers during the academic year, and garnered a second class rating from national judges. According to the judges, the best feature of the paper was the sports page, where they noted very good writing. They also presented a weekly radio program, informing the public of the activities of the students in our school. A one act play was presented by several different members of the District Speech Meet, while some of the other members participated in Poetry and Prose or another phase. For everything a Thespian does, he receives a certain amount of 1 2 or total points. Each Thespian works his hardest so that he can attain 20 points; having done this, he becomes a member of National Thespians. This is an organization in which students participate in Thespian activities on a national basis. GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ STATE Each year eight Juniors are selected to represent Rawlins High School in the form of state-wide student government known as Wonderful Wyoming Girls' and Boys' State, sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. These students are chosen on the basis of their character, leadership, scholarship, and service. The purpose of Girls' and Boys' State is to teach the contribution an individual can make to government while at the same time demonstrating the necessity of group efforts. These sessions provide valuable experience in the actual workings of our government while instilling within the individual a vast sense of pride, devotion, and allegiance toward the United States. This is a valuable experience to all participants in additional ways. The opportunity to meet the outstanding students from other Wyoming communities is an unforgettable though perhaps humbling experience. 78 Co-sponsoring organizations with the American Legion and the American Legion Auxilliary are B.P.O.E. 609, B.P.W., Lions Club, P.E.O., and Rotary. Girls' Staters for this year will find themselves busily finishing their junior year in addition to inventing slogans, perfecting some talent, demonstrating their artistic ability on campaign cards, and an eye-catching costume. In their spare time they should create a spell-binding speech. Boys are prohibited by Boys' State rules from indulging in any of these preliminary activities. Though the girls may be the privileged (?) sex, congratulations to both Girls' and Boys' Staters. 79 Vice President: Sec.-Treas.: Dorothy Morrison Irene Kelly Sponsor: Mr. Winzenried, who being ill most of the year was replaced by Mrs. Melling. Although our football season would not be considered one of our more impressive with a 2-8 record, the Rawlins Outlaws worked to the utmost, of their ability to overcome the handicap of an injury-ridden season. Even before a game was played, we lost Nick Marquith with a leg injury. Due to the brute force of Torrington, where we lost three outstanding linemen, Coach Maffoni used several underclassmen. The next week we lost to 5th place Riverton, and following this game, quarterback Frank Karpan moved to Cody. We won our game over Craig with Lon Taylor and Vernon Brown carrying the pigskin into the end-zone. We lost to Cheyenne East, Evanston, and Central the following weeks . But a welcome victory over St. Mary's brought back the spunk needed to fight the number one team of Laramie. Despite the 49-0 score, the mighty Outlaws broke the passing record with 230 yards thrown, the most ever tossed against the Plainsmen. We lost our last two games to 2nd ranked Casper and our biggest rival, Rock Springs. During all the games Tom Gardener showed why he was named Rawlins' most vaulable player. Coach Maffoni believes that had we had fewer injuries and more experience, Managers the season would have been more favorable, but he has high hopes for next year. 119 LINE-TOP ROW. J. Wilson, R. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Following the 1964 Junior Varsity football season, Rawlins High felt confident that in the next three years, our gridiron team would show Wyoming what they can do. The first game against Rock Springs left the Red and White without a point. But just to show what determination can do, two weeks later they stomped the Tigers 31-26. We then bowed to the Laramie Plainsmen, although it should be pointed out that we started with eight freshmen and they started with eight juniors. The Outlaws then carried home the honors from the Craig, Colorado game. The season was made fairly successful by great passing, outstanding running backs, and tough defense in all the games. Coach Hanson, in his first year as coach, was pleased with the boys and is looking forward to a more successful season next year. 121 The Outlaws didn't set the courts on fire during their cage season, but they did play some good ball and manage to surprise some overconfident opponents. We lost our first home game to Tor-rington in the last 30 seconds when the Trailblazers broke a tie and took a two-point lead. The following week the mighty Red and White showed their great will to beat a top team by slithering past the Central Indians 67-65 to make our first win of the year. We won our second when we met the Trail-blazers on their home court where we held their top players scoreless the first half. The R .H.S. hustlers went on to meet the No. 1 Plainsmen. Although we bowed to them, the low 54-62 score showed the fight of the Outlaws. Our third win came from the Green River Wolves. With the help of 17 free throws and a terrific control game, we took the honors with a 68-56 score. A 6th ranked Red Devil defeat gave the Rawlins High cagers their fourth victory. The season however was not termed successful. As we headed for tourney, there was little optimism among the older generation for a berth in state, but R.H.S. was out to prove them wrong, and prove them wrong they did. Perhaps it is that very idea that spurred the mighty Red and White on to win third place in the regionals. The East Thunderbirds came on the court confident that they would crush the Outlaws. But this idea was short lived. The Rawlins five exerted a superb defense effort and capitalized on free throws, sinking 79%. Vernon Brown led with 16 points and George Parsons followed with 12. The next day we played the no. 1 Plainsmen. The Outlaw squad consistently kept up a full court press and made Laramie work for every point they scored. We fought our way to within two points in the last 30 seconds but the Plainsmen controlled the ball and we came out on the bottom with a 55-59 score. The Outlaw eagers then played the Torrington Trail-blazers to see who would fight for third. Rawlins used a full court press and their control game rattled the Torrington five so badly that we easily won with a ten point lead. Our final game for third pitted us against arch-rival Rock Springs. Throughout the entire game our great defensive never faltered. The famous control game of the Outlaws kept the Tigers high-strung throughout the final quarter, and gave the trophy to the mighty Rawlins squad. Besides taking third and winning a berth at State, Vernon Brown and George Parsons were placed on the all-toumey list. Spectators now looked upon the Outlaws with new awe and respect, curious of what they would accomplish at State. Alfred tips it in. STATE As the Outlaws faced Worland in the first round of State competition, all that was said was, we had lucked out in District and would soon be out of the brackets. But the RHS squad held an unthreatened lead throughout the entire game and thus had an automatic fourth in State. Was fourth good enough for the mighty Outlaws? Obviously not, for the next evening to the amazement of every sports reporter and fan the Rawlins red eased by a shocked Cheyenne Central team 67-65. Basketball fans couldn't believe their ears. The scorned Outlaws were fighting for first place against Wyoming's finest and previous first place title holder. The moment finally came. The television cameras focused, and the battle between the Laramie Plainsmen and the Rawlins Outlaws began. The fabulous backing of Rawlins townspeople seemed to inspire their team to fight. But despite this inspiration the red and white came out on the bottom 45-60. We had held the high-scoring Plainsmen to 60 points and created such havoc in the annals of basketball history that the Rawlins Outlaws placed their city and school on the map for all posterity. 125 CINDERMEN IN ACTION The mighty Outlaws came through again. Surprising every critic and fan in Wyoming. What could you expect from an ordinary track team with a minimum amount of on-the-spot practice? Not much and that's what everyone thought about us. We felt the public was taking advantage of us again and decided to show them we could do in track what we had done in basketball. We vaulted ourselves to a 20 1 2 point victory in Rock Springs with 58 1 2 points. The RHS cindermen took first in the 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, the 880 mile relay and the broadjump. Next we headed south to Craig, Colorado for the Craig Invitational where we won with 40 1 2 points. Lonnie Taylor took the 100 yard dash and broke the record he set there in 1963 by 1.0 of a second and also broke and won the 220 yard dash by 1.3 seconds. We then headed for the Regional in Riverton where we placed 4th. We ran third in both the mile and 880 relays and recorded our best times this year. Lonnie Taylor raced to 2nd place in the 100 and 4th in the 220, while Gary Sellenrick leaped into 5th in the 120 high hurdles and the broadjump with 19' 10 . Pat Lunney stretched to 2nd in the pole vault with a height of 11' 6 and Rick Stith jumped 5' 10 for 2nd in the high jump. Thus Lunney, Stith, and Taylor qualified for the State meet. In Laramie Taylor placed 3rd in the 100 yard dash. Coach Connor was pleased with the outcome of the season and felt as did the other coaches that RHS had had a truly great athletic year. L. TOR.
