Desert Dust by Vern Wood A Real Wyoming Outlaw Rawlins High School 35th Edition Published by the Senior Class of 1946 Foreword ♦ ♦ ♦ We hope that sometime in the future you will open this book and see all of your friends and schoolmates. Then you will remember those glorious days of 1945-46. This is our purpose in publishing this ROUNDUP to capture the good times of this school year. It is our hope that this book is everything you wanted it to be. We have tried to capture every phrase of school life to help you to remember. THE STAFF. We wish to dedicate this thirty-fifth edition of the Roundup to Mr. H. H. “Sharkey” Moyer. For 21 years Mr. Moyer has been principal of Rawlins High School, and for 28 years he has taught in Wyoming. During the many years he has been in Rawlins, he has worked faithfully and well for both the school and community. “Sharkey is one of the best known educators in Wyoming. He has received every honor the state educators could bestow upon him. lor many years he was secretary of the Wyoming Education Association, and was president of that organization for one term. It was during “Sharkey’s” term as secretary of W. E. A. that the Wyoming Education News was started with him as editor. For nine years “Sharkey” was state representative for the National Education Association, and he was on the North Central Association Accrediting Committee for four years. At present he is secretary for the High School Principals Association for the State of Wyoming. Mr. Moyer, in dedicating this book to you, we hope, in a small way, to let you know that we of Rawlins High School appreciate your long and faithful service to us. Sincerely, THE ANNUAL STAFF. SUPERINTENDENT PRINCIPAL R. B. LEE For the past 19 years the head of our school system has been Mr. Robert B. Lee. He has offered his able assistance to the furtherment of school activities, creating new spirit within the school and also in the public, as was shown by the attendance to the football and basketball games. To Mr. Lee goes credit for a raise in the standards of this school and in his hands we place the task of lifting these standards even higher. We thank him for the contributions he has made to the betterment of our class and we sincerely hope he will have as much success in the future with the classes yet to come. “Sharkey” Moyer—the most familia r figure in the halls of Rawlins High School. His booming voice can be heard echoing through the corridors, commanding respect and sending inexperienced F reshies scurrying to class in mortal fear. Mr. Moyer is the instigator of many and varied activities and is also the supervisor of many already in action, always holding his sights on a better school. To you, Mr. Moyer, go our thanks for the many hours of counsel and suggestions you ha,ve given us; without you our school would not haye the high quality it possesses today. Being eager to cope with the older and more advanced classes, we chose Raymond Tickner as our class president. We achieved many things during the year, one being the Freshman Reception. The following year we were Sophomores and now more advanced. As before, we elected a person who we knew would lead our class to many achievements. It was our decision that Catherine Ingram was most capable. During our second year, many activities were held—among these was the traditional Freshman Return. The year was, in our eyes, very successful. The next year one could spot us far down the hall as we were now Juniors. We were classi-1 fied as being well along in school. Robert Van Deusen was elected president for the class. He was very industrious in working out many new ideas which were put into effect during that year. The Junior Prom was given in pomp and splendor as the final achievement of the year. Well, the big day finally arrived. We were the big men and women of Rawlins High School! We were Seniors and proud of it. For the first time in our class history we took first prize in the Outlaw Float Parade. We also contributed a great deal to the athletics of the school. The Seniors were dominant in football and basketball, many of the boys having played in their Sophomore and Junior years. On April 12, the Senior Ball was given in the school gym. It should be said, too, that the success during our Senior year is due a great deal to the splendid work of Paul Devine, our class president, and Robert Van Deusen, the student body president. The Seniors would like to say that they have enjoyed every minute of their high school years and wish to express their regards to the faculty, superintendent and principal of Rawlins High. We elected Dick Keefe, Betty Sjolin, Bill Lancaster and Chris Eliopulos as our leaders for our first year. We thanked the sophomores for the Freshman Reception by giving a Freshman Return. The Outlaw Day Parade was also an outstanding event of the year. Our first year ended successfully and we were now looking forward to more social functions and also studies as sophomores. In the fall of 1944 we started our sophomore year with a ‘‘bang” by placing second in the Outlaw Day Parade. This year as our leaders we selected Bill Laramore as president, assisted by Betty Sjolin, Jack Williams and Pat Ashley, with Mr. Sharp still our sponsor. We joined with the Freshmen this year in presenting the Victory Dance. We also contributed several boys to our football, basketball and track teams. Our second year came to a successful close and we were again looking forward to a third year in Rawlins High. In September of 1945, we once again entered Rawlins High, only to find ourselves automatically juniors, a fact of which we were very proud. We changed sponsors this year to Mr. Cheney. We again contributed to Outlaw Day by winning second prize in the parade. Our first big event of the year was the presentation of the Junior Play, “Spring Green.” The play proved to be a great success. The event we had been looking forward to for three years came when we honored the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom cn May 16. Another successful year draws to a close and we are now looking forward to a year we will never forget — that of being Seniors in Rawlins High School. BUFORD YOUNG, President. Freshman k FOOTBALL 0 0 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE YEAR For the third successive season the Outlaws ran rough shod over the conference to carry off first honors. Starting the season with a tie with Evanston, then winning their next seven games, put the Outlaws in position to play for the state championship. The trip to Cheyenne for the game which was to decide the mythical state championship, was made by nearly the entire school. We came back disappointed in the score but still proud of our team. Cheyenne won the game 25 to 0. The season was successful in many ways. Several Outlaws were given places on the All-state teams. Among those thus honored were: Charles Cooper, Gerald Jordan, Harold Penland, James Tripp, Harold Ogburn and Bob Lovato. Then when they started the season with nine wins in a row we were certain they were the team of the year. Somethin happened to our winning ways and we lost three games before getting back into the win column. We believe too many local fans had the team picked as the state championship, and the boys began to believe it, too. By the end of the season we had won 19 games and lost 12. At the District Tournament we won 2 games and lost 2 to come out fifth with no chance to play in the state tournament. Our battle against time and circumstance has finally ended with distribution of the 1946 Roundup. We cannot feel anything but a profound relief and a very great pride in our production. No member of the staff was in charge of any specific division of the book. When there were ads to be sold we all tramped the streets; where there were pictures to paste, we all pasted them; when there was any other work to be done, we all did it. And in this editor’s opinion, it was done well. I cannot remember any time that any person refused to accept an assignment with the excuse of having something else to do. To the staff the annual came first and it was going to be the best annual presented to this school. This was the motive of our sponsor, Mr. King, also. To him goes much of the credit for the success of this annual. And so I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to my staff, and to Mr. King. They’ve done a wonderful job. CATHERINE INGRAM Outlaw Corral Staff. „ . What is it that is the backbone of every high school, college or university? What is it that brings the latest news directly to youWhat is it that relates the feelings end opinions of the students? Why, it is the paper, of cours e. And in R. H. S. it is the “Outlaw Corral.” For the past twenty-four years, Rawlins High has had a paper, and from its infancy to the present day it has struggled to bring to the studen'ts news and opinions on subjects vital to the school. Composed entirely of students, mostly seniors, with Miss Moor as sponsor, the “Outlaw Corral” of 1945-46 has sought to maintai’.i the high standards set by the papers, of previous years. It is only, however, with the help and cooperation of the stu Jents and faculty members that we were a !e to do so. We of the staff, therefore, wish to thank all of you for your kind help and consideration, for we know without it we would have failed. Thespians This year the Thespians presented the Junior Class play, the Senior Class play, and a one-act play at Christmas time. The Saint Patrick’s Day assembly was also sponsored by this group. It is the ambition of this group to present more plays and programs next year. There are plans for a club to be formed that will put on several one-act plays and several other programs next year. Some of the best training a boy or girl can get while in school is to take part in dramatic programs. There is usually too little of this type of training and for the past year we have not worked out enough good assembly programs. We hope many more people become interested and take part in the years to come so they can become Thespians, too. It’s the most exclusive club we have, yet its members are chosen by the students themselves. It’s the National Honor Society, of course, the highest award given to any individual student. Membership to this organization is held in higher esteem than any other prize to be gained in Rawlins High. People elected to this society have shown their ability in their studies, in their leadership, in willingness to cooperate with others and give their service, and in their characters. We think it should be noted that more than 30% of our senior class was eligible to gain membership, and 20% of the juniors were up for the honor. It is our government ! I would like very much to express my appreciation and gratitude to all the members of the Student Council and to its able sponsor, Mr. King. For all those who are in future administrations, may you have complete success in your accomplishments and lots of pleasant experiences.
