HAY 1944 PHILIP CHRISTOPHER ______________ Editor-In-Chief VERN VIVION ------------------- Photographer - JOE SIRA’V ----------------- Business Manager 33rd Annual Foreword ♦ ♦ ♦ The success of a yearbook steins not from what it has in common with other yearbooks or publications, but from what it has extraordinary to itself. We could never hope to record the complete history of such a climatic year as this one has been for us, both in our school and in our national affairs. We have not attempted to do so. We have tried to record enough of our school and the Outlaws that in years hence this Round-Up will ever provide a happy source of memories and pleasures. If we, in some small way, can convey this picture, we will have caught the picture of this year and what it has meant to the Seniors, who are leaving the school to walk on into the future. Dedication . . . The success of yearbooks stems not from what it has in common with any other yearbooks, but from what it has extraordinary to itself. We have attempted to catch the spirit of these “OUTLAWS” this year. We hare dedicated this edition of the “ROUNDUP” to Sports because vve believe that good, clean, sports develop fine people which are vital to the type of life that we are fighting for. Good fellowship, sportsmanship, strong, healthy bodies, fine clean minds are but a few of the finer things that are encouraged by sports. Our record this year in the f:eld of sports has been a fine one ... District Champions in football . . . . voted Team Of The Year .... Second place in District Basketball .... Fourth place in State Basketball . . . . but finer than these titles is the knowledge that our boys knew the finer things in sports, which helped them to win these titles for the school and us. Everyone no matter whether he actually helped to win the title, or not, if he is truly interested, has done something for sports and is helping to perpetuate sports, has done something for democracy. Many of our boys are going to war and we hope that the things they learned in this school, through sports and other activities willl help them to show themselves as the finest specimens of American Manhood . . . . God Bless Them All .... We could never hope to record the complete history of such a climatic year. We have not attempted to do so, but if we have in some small way conveyed a picture of the vital, growing, evolving force that is democracy we shall have caught the picture of 1944. THE ROUNDUP STAFF Administration MR. ROBERT B. LEE Mr. Robert B. Lee, superintendent of the Rawlins Public Schools for the past seventeen years, received his B. A. and M. A. degrees from the University of Iowa. Mr. Lee has come to be recognized by both faculty members and students as one of the school’s most valuable assets. Possessing the rare ability to be both a good fellow and a good administrator, he leads the school in every sense of the word. For continual conscientious administration Mr. Lee deserves our best wishes. A most capable and industrious leader and promoter of education is Mr. H. H. Moyer, principal of Rawlins High School for the past 19 years. Mr. Moyer graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1917. He has done pest graduate work at the Universities of Iowa, Denver and Wyoming. He has held the position of president, secretary and treasurer of the Wyoming Educational Association and editor of the Wyoming Educational News. His object has been to make the greatest possible contribution to the war effort while simultaneously maintaining a semblance of education as usual. W’e wish to extend our congratulations to Mr. Moyer for his fine work. MR H. H. MOYER Faculty .. ANNA LEE BAUER “Anna” Corral Editor PHILIP CHRISTOPHER “Chris” Roundup Editor Class of ROBERT SULLINS “Bobby” Vice President Senior Class History On September 7, 1940 the big race began and we, the very enthusiastic freshmen, started off at a swift pace for the four year relay race. The first big event was the grand Freshman Reception given in our honor, and then, in an effort to prove ourselves a top team, we followed this up by building the best Outlaw Day float. Our captain Vern Vivion, led us through an exciting and fun packed quarter and to three-month rest period in May. With a little more serious note in the game, our team, now bearing the name of Sophomores, started on the second lap of the race. This time we gave the welcome to the new Freshmen team and then buckled down to playing the game. Our new leader, Keith Snider, gave us pointers on playing the game and being a top notch team. Again in May a well-earned rest was taken to freshen up for the third quarter. VERNON VIVION “Vern” Student Body President With two quarters behind us we Juniors, as we were now called, were experienced and more confident of our stride. Led by Joe Siray we raced through a wonderful year filled with outstanding events and memories. We received class rings, gave the Junior Play, began to take a greater interest in other school activites, and finally before the whistle for the end of the third blew, we gave a Prom and Banquet to the departing team, the Seniors. Entering into the final quarter with the goal in sight, interest was at a high point and the whole team strived to do their best, again our team getting first for the Outlaw Day float and under our re-elected leader, Joe Siray, many new activities were introdueecd. At the half many of our teammates had to leave the group to do a bigger job but finally after being greatly honored at the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet, we broke the tape and received our diplomas with the memories of a wonderful race and many good times. Junior Class Rowland Brown_______________ President Bill Engstrom-------------Secy.-Treas. Pat Kauffman------------Vice President Leroy Siray-------------Representative Douglas Dinsmore Chairman of Prom Committee Class History September 2, 1941 marked a high point in the lives of almost one hundred students, for on that day we formally entered the portals of Rawlins High School, under the sponsorship of Miss Hayes. To guide us through our first yearin high school we elected as our officers Austin Jordan, Charmaine Petrich, Demetrio Martinez, and Francis Michie. Our first yeai started off by being entertained at the annual Freshman Reception by the sophomores and we decided that attending high school was really the life. Other outstanding events of the year were the Outlaw Day Parade, and the Freshman Return. Our first high school year ended with many successes in the field and we looked forward to another year of fun and studies as sophomores. September of 1942 found our ambition realized, we had advanced from green Freshmen to proud Sophomores. We promptly started things rolling by welcoming the Freshmen at the Freshman reception. We selected for our leaders this year Mickey Fraher, Ted Castor, Charmaine Petrich and Alget Hall. We placed second this year in the Outlaw Day Parade, and we contributed a number of athletics to the school in football, basketball and track. As our Sophomore year came to an end we again looked forward to another year in Rawlins High. The fall of 1943 showed our class greatly reduced, again enter the halls of Rawlins High School, for some the last time as a number of the boys are leaving for service at the end of their Junior year. For the second time we changed sponsors, this time being under the sponsorship of Mr. Schlef. Roland Brown was elected president, being supported by Pat Kaufman, Bill Engstrom and Leroy Siray. Our first big event of this year was the presentation of the Junior Play “Ever Since Eve.” The play was very successful and again we meet with a number of successes in the field. The event that we had been looking forward to for three years came at last on May 17 when we honored the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. After a successful year for us school ends. We are looking forward to the most important year of our lives, and one that we will never forget—that of being Seniors in Rawlins High School. Officers DOUG DINSMORE. Our able sponsor, Miss Parks, has guided us well and has helped us to ?rience on their way through school. We have excellent officers who have served us to the very best of their ability. Our athletes and scholars have done more than their share in perpetuating the high traditions of our school. One of the members of our class was chosen drum majorette last year, and another member was chosen drum major for next year. Our class has prospered through undivided loyalty to our country, school and fellow classmates. In the past we have striven to uphold the honor of our school, and we will strive to do so in future years. Roundup ♦ ♦ ♦ The “Roundup” During the course of this year, the “ROUNDUP” staft under the direction of Miss Insley, has strived to make this annual of ours, a treasure to hold permanently. We have tried to catch the spirit of Rawlins High. Packed between these covers are the pictures of your friends—pictures of the fun you had and where you had it—your picture—your triumph and failure. Rawlins High School life assumed a new serious tone as we, the high school students geared ourselves for war. We hope that the 1944 Roundup will do more than present a summary of the year's events, and that it will recreate in your memories a vivid picture of this highly significant year. Outlaw Corral Rawlins High has had a school paper since 1921. The paper we first issued under the name of “THE EXHAUST.” In February 1940 the students voted to change the name of the paper to something pertaining to the theme of R. H. S.; the bucking bronc or the Outlaw Horse. Thus the paper was crowned “The Outlaw Corral.” This year the paper has been going to press under the able guidance of Miss Insley, although the staff has been gradually diminishing. Murray Daniels, exchange editor, is now a student of the Specialized Training Division at Colorado State College; Sarah Jane Erickson, literary editor, completed her course in high school to take a position in a downtown office; and Kenneth Madsen, interview editor, is also at Colorado State College participating in the Specialized Training. After 22 years the school paper is definitely a part of R. H. S. and should develop with the school into a larger and finer bulletin—one that can never be broken down!! Several projects were taken up this year and all proved to be successful. They included The Recreation Hall, as it is known to the students, '‘Ye Old Corral,'’ the Safety Drive, the Scrap Drive, Stampede Day and Outlaw Day. This year, through the able guidance of Miss Thode, the sponsor, the names of servicemen and women who attended Rawlins High School were compiled for the high school honor roll. A quiz assembly was given for the high school—the proceeds of which went into the purchase of war bonds and a donation to the American Red Cross. Ten years ago, on April 27, thirteen charter members installed a chapter of the National Honor Society in Rawlins High School. Each year since then five per cent of the Junior Class and ten per cent of the Senior Class have been initiated into the society. Candidates must be students in the upper third of their class or those with an average of eighty-five per cent or above. However, scholarship alone is not enough. The candidates must be outstanding examples of American youth. They must participate in extra-curricular activities of the school, be interested in those things which America stands for and is fighting for on all fronts. The basis for membership are character, service, leadership and scholarship. These things are the basis needed for good Americans, and people having these qualifications are the people needed to perpetuate our type of government life. The Senior members chosen last year are Anna Lee Bauer, Dorothy Ann Brimmer, Betty Yvonne Brown and Ruth Nancy Sannes. Old Members—Betty Brown, Peg Brimmer, Ruth Sannes, Ann Lee Bauer. Football Schedule ♦ ♦ ♦ On September 7, a green bunch of Rawlins Outlaws rode to Casper, only to be defeated 18 to 0 by a hard-hitting crew of Mustangs. The next week-end the same Outlaws traveled to the “Gem City1’ and defeated the Laramie Plainsmen 13 to 0. After seven days of hard practice, Rawlins was ready for another game with the Casper gang which had defeated them the first game of the season. After trailing 12 to 0 at the half, the mighty Outlaws came back to win 13 to 12 in what turned out to be one of the best games that was played on the local gridiron this year!!!! The following Friday the Outlaw team ventured to Cheyenne, the Capitol City. It was here that disaster overtook the Rawlins boys and a 30 to 0 trouncing was there end of the game which was played on what seemed to be a cement field. Following up the defeat by the Cheyenne Indians, Rawlins took the Superior Dragons into camp 30 to 0 on the Dragons’ home field. The next week the Outlaw eleven played the best game they turned in the whole season. It was against the Rock Springs Tigers. It seemed that everything work- ed perfectly and the Rawlins boys brought home the bacon. Score 20 to 0. Again on their home field the mighty Outlaws rolled over the Green River Wolves 26 to 6. The Wolves scored first, but the Outlaws came through with three more touch-downs than the crew from Green River. In the last game of the season the Rawlins team really went to work and defeated the Plainsmen again 46 to 6. Rawlins received the first place trophy for the district; was ranked second best team in the state and was named the “Team of The Year.” A fitting tribute for a most successful team.
