ROBERT BAUDER, EDITOR BILL NILAND, BUSINESS MANAGER Forewor A dim ray of sunshine flickers across a dust-covered book. I brash away the years and open its pages. My teachers and class- mates, joys, hopes, and sorrows are revealed -again as my eager eyes search its contents. A book of memories-this Our Annual, pre- pared in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-two, will indeed be a milestone on the road of memory that will stretch behind us in endless undulating waves. Dedication. .. . mhis year, a. decisive turning point in the history of our country, we, the senior class of 1942, dedicate this Round-Up to the boys in service. For they are the backbone of the nation, the representatives and the pride of all the people. We, who remain at home, see them leave their homes and those- they love. We view the breathing, throbbing symbol of courage, hope, and all the ideals for which they will fight and some will die. We are proud to hold up our heads, knowing that we are sending away the best among us. The boys in service on land, sea and in the' air, are offering their strength, their ambi- tion, their most precious possessions, their lives, to maintain for us our freedom and to bring to us ultimate victory. For them we shall give our utmost to the duties to which we have been assigned, and for them shall we always keep the home fires of liberty burning. . . . In Memoriam . . . RICHARD WALLENSTEIN BEDE BETTY WADE Born Sept. 8, 1923 Died Apr. 23, 1931. The Annual Staff of 1942 proudly salutes Henry Wallenstein, killed in action at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although Dick was a member of the class of 1941, his cheerful attitude and vigor cannot be forgotten by any of those who knew him. Born in Chehalis, Wash- ington, and having lived here for sim years, he came to Rawlins with his par- ents to attend the Rawlins schools until entry into the United States Navy in De- cember of 1940. His numerous friends in Rawlins High School remember his broad smile and lively antics and remembering, gladly say, I knew him when .... For Richard is one of that staggering number of great .Americans whose names, though not in our histary books, will live in our hearts forever. RICHARD CULLEN Born Sept. 19, 1923 Died March 18, 1934 VIOLET GALE Born July 16, 1924 Died July 7, 1937 CARROLL RETTSTATT Born Nov. 28, 1923 Died May 3, 1942 dminzisztmztion . . . . A most capable and industrious leader and promoter of education is Mr. Robert B. Lee, superintendent of the Rawlins Public Schools. Mr. Lee is a graduate of the University of Iowa, from where he has received his B. A. and M. A. degrees. This distinguished gentleman has been with the Rawlins High School for 15 years and states that every year has been one of new in- terests and improvements in our sys- tem. Mr. Lee is one of the most prom- inent men in our city. He is very active in civic, business and frater- nal organizations. We congratulate Mr. Lee for his fine work as the head of our school system. MR. H. H. MOYER MR. ROBERT B. LEE Mr. H. H. Moyer is ending his seventeenth year as principal of Raw- lins High School. He was principal of Kemmerer High School before he came here. Mr. Moyer graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1917. He served two years in the last war and was in France 16 months. He re- ceived a commission while in France. He has done post graduate work at the Universities of Iowa, Denver, and Wyoming. He has held the po- sition of president, secretary, and treasurer of the Wyoming Educa- tion Association, and editor of the Wyoming Educational News. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Student government throughout the years of Rawlins High School has been directed by a group of students elected every year by the Student Body. L15 This year the Student Council started out on what appeared as the usual routine. Yet, before the year ended, the press of modern events had made student government a greater necessity than before. We were at war! To keep the light of democracy burning there were War stamps to sell and students to teach in the ways of democracy. Undoubtedly, many chances to achieve these two ends were neg- lected and passed by. We have, however, had a certain degree of success. The success has been gained solely by the Student Council. They are the silent members of your government who do the work and sit back while another receives the plaudits of the crowd. Any congratulation extended to this administration is due the Student Council. J. Duane Jones. High School Ojfcers J. DUANE JONES Jonesy Student Body President BEVERLY LEE QUIGLEY HQuig,7! Treasurer In September of 1938, a wide-eyed, timid class of freshmen came into Rawlins High, destined to make history Among the first major ex- periences was the ordeal of initiation. Bolwing to tradition and with the blessings of elder classmates, the froshies went to the summit of R hill to white-wash the UR. Later these high school beginners could be seen tiptoeing down the halls, loaded with books and peering over the tops of their burdens. The next year saw them. much more accustomed! to their routines and well upon the road to success. Actively participating in any school event which may have demanded their services, these lively sophs were highly acclaimed for their scholastic achievement, their good sports- manship, and their eager willingness to be of help. W'hen. they had chalked up another milestone, they came bounding into their junior year. Walking down the halls, one could always spot a junior with his high-polished apple and his eye out for a pretty girl. The J uniorl class play, Professor How Could You ? was presented to the public in April, 1941, and brought into light part of the genius embodied in this group of spirited students. In May of the same year, the Juniors honored the seniors with the annual banquet and prom decorated in blue and silver. With an emphatic good- bye to that year, they took a hop, skip and jump, and landed squarely into their last year. Having taken over the annual and the paper, the high and mighty seniors ruled with ans iron hand with one eye slyly fixed on graduation and the other on the underclassmen. In May they enacted a. ''super-thriller-driller'' entitled A Murder Has Been Arranged, and in the same month they were given a royal send-off at the banquet and prom. The dawn of May 28 found a class of tearful graduates donning their .caps and gowns for their final hand-shaking with Rawlins High. Here'S hoping they never forget and are never forgotten by their Alma Mater. LAMOIINE FRANCIS ROBERTS LOUIS E. AMICK Louie L1LL1AN ANDERSON --Ln MARGARET J. As Freshmen, we were not disappointed by the discontinuance of the traditional initiation. Instead, the Sophomores delighted us by the annual reception. Class el- ections put Mary Joan McGarry, Chester Evans, Bill Briggs, and Martha Lynch in the ofiicial po- sitions of our class. We Freshmen proved our mettle when we entered our first Outlaw Day float and gave the return dance for the Sophomgores. Our first year in Rawlins High School ended after many successes in every field. The fall of 1940 found the students of our .fair class no longer green Freshmen, but Sopho- mores. We started the year off with a bang with the official welcome dance for the Freshmen. The students decided upon James Ingram as their president, with Humio Inouye, Charles McNees, and Kenneth Miller as assistant leaders. We kept up our good name and continued our suc- cess. ' Outlaw Day proved to be a big day for the Sophomores. Our basketball team captured second place in the school. School ended with a determination to be even better next year. Our same class, considerably reduced now, again entered Rawlins High last fall, this time as Juniors. That same determination to succeed was still uppermost in our minds. We were grieved to learn that our sponsor, Miss Magill, would no longer be with us, but things looked bright for the Juniors when we learned that our class had been placed under the capable guidance of Miss lnsley. Kenneth Miller was elected president this year, capably supported by Kay Petersen, Mary Joan McGarry, and Bill Carlson. Our first big event was the successful Junior Play, Through the Keyhole. Success after success in every field in school was ours. We captured first place in school basketball, this victory being rapidly followed by a. first place in track. Ken- neth Miller was chosen to head the student body for the succeeding year. The outstanding social event of the year was our honoring of the Seniors at the J unior-Senior Banquet and Prom. After a most successful year for us, school ends. Next year we'll be Seniors, with higher aspirations than ever. Kenneth Miller, Junior Class President. Some clay you will want to wander over these pages again. With this in mind, and knowing that memories should be present, we have tried by graphic reproduction to catch something of the lil'e at Rawlins High School. In a Vevv days you'll bc writing in each other's books and seeing how many times we've taken your picture. In a few years you'll be going back and remembering. May those thoughts be happy ones. In each of the following years since that time, five per cent of the Junior Class and tenf per cent of the Senior Class have been recepients of this honor. These students must be in the upper third of the class with in average of eighty-five per cent or more. Their membership is based upon character, service, leadership, and scholarship, The symbol of the National Honor Society is the lighted torch of learn- ing. lt is up to each of those selected to keep this torch high and aflame. The ninth annual assembly for initiation into the circle was a thrilling occasion for' four Juniors and ten Seniors. Rawlins High is extremely proud of their high school band. The bright red uni- forms may be seen at every occasion marching and playing in all their glory. The band under the leadership of Mr. Ove Petersen, has copped many awards within the last few years. In 1940 four members were selected for the all-state band at Casper. We believe that our fifty band members have earned the title of one of the best bands in the state. The band had planned to attend the State Music Festival this year but due to war con- ditions, it was called off. Members who would have been selected for all-state band this year are Joe Fraher, Billy Johanson, Bill Peter, Norman Moon, Mary .loan McGarry and Albert Walbye. No graduating class in the history of the nation was ever so welcome in the functional realm of our society than you. Never before have we been taught so forcefully the lesson that the youth of this country is our greatest asset. We all wish that contentment and business-as-usual could ,have greeted you on your embarkation into your chosen fields, but such is not the case. Democracy faces its supreme test, however, we are confident that we shall prevailg not because of the imposing proportions of the agricultural, in- dustrial or financial structure, but because of the young people of this nation, their stamina, ingenuity and ambition, that will translate those components into an effective force which shall terminate in victory. Our very best wishes for your continued success. H. A. FRANCE, President RAWLINS NATIONAL BANK +nwxNvW V 'Q is f, r' Q. fm 1. . Th :T r-ww ,1 4 s .- 1 .A .W 1 2 vi .. 1 1 ' c 4 My K ,. Q. J!
