Supposedly the faculty and upper classmen thought the school would never be the same again, but routine and time tamed us into a measure of conformity. Being eighty in number and having the largest class in history,we gained pride in proportion to our size. Our sponsors for the freshman year were Denzil Jarrett and Oren Kyger. Margie Rowley was elected president, Frank Smeeks, vice-president, Beverly Blake, secretary, and Don Bonar, treasurer. We held our class banner high. One teacher describes our class by one word scintillating. By the time September had rolled around again, we were ready and accepted our new status as sophomores with continued pride and dis- tinction. Beginning in 1953 we took over, with unwavering confidence, our natural role of center-stage in school. We started in extra-curricu- lar activities aswell as classrooms. Ann McCoy was elected president, Danny Haught, vice-president, Helen Miller, secretary, and Don Bonar, treasurer. For that year we rated our permanent capable sponsors, Mrs. John Landfried and Mr. James Porter. ln 1954 we received our class rings a year ahead of the traditional schedule. We staged with enthusiastic success, An Old Kentucky Gar- den, an operetta inthree acts. The colorful background, costumes, and musical roles brought equally enthusiastic audience response. Our Jr.- Sr. Banquet and Prom setting was a novel replica of French decor and cuisine. Again this year we had our two beloved sponsors, Mrs. Land- fried and Mr. Porter. Serving us as officers for that well-remembered year were Dean Moore, president, Danny Haught, vice-president, Helen Miller, secretary, and Don Bonar, treasurer. A fine spirit of co-oper- ation was enjoyed by our whole class. As seniors in 1955 we numbered 70. Decreased in quantity but not in quality, we accepted our new honors with proper pride and a new hu- mility. Now these Halls of Ivy seemed more dear, and we loved them. It was this year that we published the Nautilus. Looking forward to graduation, some were anxious, others were dreading it, and some few were still gliding along. This being the all-important year, most of us kept bustling. We had the senior play, Homecoming Game, Class Night, and graduation exercises to prepare. Crowned Miss Red Devil from our class was Mirt Wilson with Mr. Red Devil, Wilmer Taylor. We were well represented by our senior class officers: President, Margie Rowley, vice-president, Dennis Click, secretary, Billie Boggs, and, for afourth-time record,Don Bonar, treasurer. At this time we would like to thank our honorable sponsors, Mrs. Joan Landfried and Mr. James Porter, for the good advice and expert guidance they have given us. To the entire faculty we give appreciation for help and discipline. We are now ready to face the future. Whatever comes we feel secure and assured thatwe had already taken one big step in the right direction. Now with humble hearts we leave you, dear High School. Through the years that will roll around,we 'll remember you. May we live the prophe- cy of our class motto: America may expect much of us. 16 Class Will We, Charlotte Monroe and Ann McCoy, will our good times, no study, and passing grades to George Kopcsak and Bob Patterson. They opened the season on a sour note, being downed by the Vikings of Ripley 13-12. The game was nip-and-tuck all the way through with the Vikings holding a slight edge as the final whistle blew. Parsons tallied R1pley's two touchdowns while Jackson and McCoy scored for Ravenswood. Avenging their loss to Ripley in fine style, the local boys downed the Spencer Yellow Jackets in the next game 19-O. James McCoys' 65 yard runproved the decisive play as from then on it was all Ravenswood, with Jackson and Kelly adding insurance markers. In the next contest the Red Devilsliterally drowned the Harrisville Gators by a 40-0 count. The game proved a continuous downpour of rain and Red Devil touchdowns. Jackson scored three times to lead the scoring parade while Mc- Coy, Kelly and Fox provided extra support with one, each. The Spano-coached machine continued to roll as they met and downed the Tigers from Sister sville way. The former state B champs' hope for another title was soon blocked as the Red Devils displayed an enormous amount of power in stopping them 34-7. Larry Jackson again led the Red Devil attack with three touchdowns while Melvin Haught and George Kopcsak, each, added one to the cause. The RHS Homecoming proved an overwhelming success as the boys did it again by whipping Pennsboro 34-O. Quarterback McCoy sparked the rallying by adding two touchdowns while Jackson, Danny Haught, and Ken Kelly were, each, adding one. Bernard Staats again led the rough Ravenswood line. In the next game the White Falcons from Wahama battled the mighty Devil guns to a 6-6 standstill. Wahama's Paugh picked up a fumble and raced 75 yards for the first score. However, in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter Jackson climaxed a Ravenswood drive to buck over from the 2 yard line. The next game was one the Red Devils wanted to forget as the State runners- up from Elizabeth eked out a Z0-13 victory. Tiger halfbackBumgarner scored three touchdowns to lead Elizabeth while McCoy and Kopcsak hit paydirt for the faltering Devils. Scoring at their own pleasure, Ravenswood downed Walton in the next pig- skin battle to a 32-O count. Kopcsak led the Red Devils in this game by am- massing three touchdowns while McCoy and Jackson scored one each to give further proof of the mightiness of the Red Devil scoring punch. ln the next game thirteen seniors said good-bye to Flinn Field with 3, Smile as they trounced Calhoun for the firsttime in eight years Z0-13. McCoy opened the scoring for Ravenswood witha 24 yard scamper. Fox added two more pay- dirts in the second half on 87 and 9 yard runs. Closing the season proved quite a task, but the Devils managed to pull out a 2.0-19 victory over Buffalo. Kopcsak proved hero of the day as he tallied three touchdowns for all of Ravenswood's scores. Staats led the Red Devils on defense as they closed a successful season. 31 R.H.S. 1955 Football Team 1 e X s 13 -.. Full of pep and vim we went after our second win against Gilmore only to come home losers, the score 51-46. We thenwent on our first road trip in the school's history to Kermit and Chat- taroy. We easily took the first game in a fine display of basketball, the final score being 80-73. However, the next night we lost to Chattaroy 81-59. Back once more to R.H.S. Gymnasium we played Point Pleasant, but lost by the close score of 66-59. Next on the schedule was the Alumni. Not being what they used to be, the Red Devils defeated them 79-46. Back on our winning streak again we defeated Wahama 73-57. In our next game we again met our old rivals and friends, Ripley, defeating them 88-85. We then lost one of the hardest games of the seasons to Spencer 57-56. Back to our own stomping grounds once more We lost to Kermit 79-78, another great disappointment. Walton then journeyed to R.H.S., but bowed to the Red Devils 78-67. Next we went to Elizabeth for an L.K. Game, trompling them 86-46. ln revenge of our first loss we then romped over Gilmore by the score of 100-62, the first time Ravenswood had hit the 100 mark We broke another record at Wahama that same week by beating them by the close score of 77-74. 6 Again revenge was our object. We got our revenge by winning over Spencer 8 -59. Our winning streak once again going strong we beat Grantsville in an after- noon game, at Grantsville, 87-44. Elizabeth again bowed to the mighty Red Devils by a score of 79-59. Point Pleasant, the only team that beat us twice during the season beat us by the score of 94-91. We needed a win over Walton to assure us first place in the Southern Divi- sion of the L.K. Conference, but Walton beat the Spano Men bya score of 76-75. Grantsville was next, and a win over them assured at least a tie in the L.K. Southern Division. Spencer and Ravenswood had the same record, but the Red Devils were chosen by the coaches of the Southern Division to play Sandfork in the L. K. playoff, Sandfork had lost only one game all season and no games in the Northern Divi- sion. Sandfork was picked to win and did by the score of 95-88, but the Red Devils never let their opponents once take a breather. High scorer for the year was Dean Moore, R.1-l.S. center, who had an average of at least 2.5 points or more during the season. Thus ended a very successful season for the Ravenswood Red Devil Basket- ball team. On Thursday, March lst, we met Gilmore in the first game of the Sectional Tournament, romping over them 80-48. On Friday we took on Walton and very successfully tromped them by the score of 90-58. The Red Devils go to the Regional Tournament next week, and we wish them the best of luck. 38 Ravenswood versus Spencer HV? It was a Comedy-Fantasy in three acts with 18 characters. The Valley, owned by Eldon Berry, DENNIS CLICK, is about to be lost to the unscrupulous hands of one Tobias J. Everheel, DANNY HAUGHT. Eldon does not want to lose the land at this time because it has become so plentiful. Even his cow, Minnie gives gallons of rare milk--milk so rare that those who drink it hear weird music and see people . . . people who officially stopped walking the earth many years before. Like everyone else, Prim Stokes, ANN MCCOY, who was in love with Eldon, didn't believe it ei- ther until Lonesome Berry, WARD KING, materialized and planted a kiss on her surprised lips. The other live characters were Tinker Smith, DON BONAR, a skinny, perplexed tractor driver of 22, Martha Mears, MARGIE ROWLEY, a cultured woman of the Historical Society, and Eva Friese, ALOISE HUGHES, an outspoken creamery maid. Those from the past were Grampaw Berry, DAN POWELL, Granny Berry, CAROL CAVENDER, Cal- houn Berry, WILMER TAYLOR, Jeb Berry, IORDEN VanNEST, Ransome Berry, DEAN MOORE, and Prudence, MARY LOU KITTLE. The displaced settlers were Rufe Thomas, DANNY MCGREW, Sarah, IAN Wl-IITE, Hip Cooley, TED SUCK, Mamie, ANNABEL DUNCAN, and Shade Stokes, ROY CLICK. In the happy ending, GREEN VALLEY was restored and Prim's love was no longer a one -sided af- fair. The relatives and friends from the past went back to their graves and everyone is happy. The play was also presented on March 20 for the Public and on the 21st for the Elementary School. Everyone enjoyed it very much. f W ' L ,.,--Q. . .YL ' - v'f g m. 35 3, wi gif 4512 , 1 Bev Jim, Peggy and Bill 47 Sue's Party , J K , f, , J fiqfffa ,M-vwrf Margie 1 lf f ' gf I. gf Af-,Q .
