JOHN STARK RAVENSGROFT John Stark Raveiiseroft. t11e first Bishop of t11e liplst-opal llioeese of North Carolina, was b01'11 May 17, 1772, at Rave11seroft, the family estate near What is now Petersburg, Virginia. As a child he was taken to ireland by l1is family, wfhere at eight years of age he lost his father. He spent the 1'9lll2l1lll191' of his boyhood i11 Irela11d and there received his early ezlueation froni his mother. At seve11tee11 he returned to Aineriea to equip hiniself to take care of his fan1ily's property i11 Virginia and 9111811111 XVillian1 and Mary College. After a year or so at NVillia1n and Mary, he returned to RZ1Y9llE4Q'1'Uf1u and inanaged the 131311-t3t1011. In February, 1516, he was licensed Lay Reader by t11e Bishop of Virginia and i11 April of that year he was or11aine11 lle111'o11. At 14'rede1'ic-ks- burg, Virginia, in May, 1817, l1e 911'f9l'9C1 t11e priesthooal. Tl1e 11ewly formed Diocese of North i'aroli11a elected 111111 its first Bishop 011 May 22, 1823, and for seve11 years he labored to lay t11e foun11ations 011 which t11e work of the Episcopal f,'1l111'4'11 in North VZl1'Ull1l2l l1as been built. EDGAR HAYWOOD MEMORIAL BARISI-I HOUSE The Edgar Haywood Meniorial l'11risl1 House at St. Saviour's 111 Raleigh was built, fully equipped and donated by 1'jl'1lt'rT'f ll:1ywoo11 as a n1en1orial to his brother, Edgar Haywood, and was dedic-atezl on August 11, 151227, by the Right Reverend Joseph B. No inexperienced teachers are employed. Preparation, experience and ability rank them at the top. 3.
