RAVENSCROFT SCHOOL HISTORICAL SKETCH OR a new school, Rarenscroft Q background. Tn his last will County in the year 1862, Josia Church, established a trust to run ii under the terms of the trust, was to ' school by Christ Church. For a Church operated a parochial schoof the school was discontinued. The ias an old and interesting historical and testament, probated in Wake ii VVatson, a communicant of Christ 1 perpetuity, the income from which ine used for the operation of a parish number of years thereafter Christ , but near the close of the century fund lay dormant for many years, during which the income was used for the operation of the church school and for other religious purposes. Tn October, 1936, the Reverend John Armstrong VVright became Rector of Christ Church Parish. VVithin a short time he learned of the Wvatson Trust, and immediately started a campaign to establish a new parochial school. The Vestry of Christ Church authorized Mr. Wright to investigate thc possibilities of such a school, and appointed a committee to assist him. The Committee was composed of E. U. Rag- land, Charles R. Rugg, James R. Bynum, A, L. Purrington, Jr., Aldert S. Root, Perry E. Seagle, and J. M. Sink, Jr. The Committee approved the organization of the school and selected as its site the Edgar Haywood Memorial Parish House on Tucker Street. Witli the financial assistance of the vestry of Christ Church numerous repairs were made to the prop- erty and modern equipment Was purchased. After much consideration, the school was named Ravenscroft in honor of the first Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and the first rector of Christ Church. The school opened on Monday, September 13, 1937, With an enrollment of 130 students, increased to 135 by the end of the school year. RAVEN SCROFT FACTS Tim soul of cducafion is the cfluc-ation of the soul. 1. Ravenscroft School vvas established 1937. 2. Faculty members hold State Certificates-A rating. No inexperienced teachers are employed. Preparation, experience and ability rank them at the top. 3. Combines best elementary education vvith religious training, including daily service in church. with deiinite religious instruction in the classroom. 4. Enrollment limited. This insures individual instruction. which gives students better opportunity for promotion. 5. Class lessons in music and art given each class. Glee Club ope11 to stu- dents of upper grades. Private lessons in music and art may be arranged for with additional charge. 6. Each group on the playground is supervised at all times by classroom teacher. T. Excellent cafeteria operated at lovv cost by trained dietitian-under super- vision of school authorities. S. Every effort is made to promote health of children. 9. Has tvvo Brownie Scout troops and one Girl Scout troop. Members of iifth. sixth and seventh grades serve on school Altar Guild. 10. Courses in elementary French and Spanish are available to students in upper grades. 11. Students have an active chapter of American Junior Red Cross. 12. Faculty cares for children for a reasonable length of time during after school hours until called for by parents. 13. The total enrollment of children having attended Ravenscroft is more than 1500. 14. The intluence of the religious training is incalculable. 15. The Rector of Christ Church is likevvise the Rector of the school. JOHN STARK RAVENSGROFT John Stark Raveiiseroft. t11e first Bishop of t11e liplst-opal llioeese of North Carolina, was b01'11 May 17, 1772, at Rave11seroft, the family estate near What is now Petersburg, Virginia. As a child he was taken to ireland by l1is family, wfhere at eight years of age he lost his father. He spent the 1'9lll2l1lll191' of his boyhood i11 Irela11d and there received his early ezlueation froni his mother. At seve11tee11 he returned to Aineriea to equip hiniself to take care of his fan1ily's property i11 Virginia and 9111811111 XVillian1 and Mary College. After a year or so at NVillia1n and Mary, he returned to RZ1Y9llE4Q'1'Uf1u and inanaged the 131311-t3t1011. In February, 1516, he was licensed Lay Reader by t11e Bishop of Virginia and i11 April of that year he was or11aine11 lle111'o11. EDGAR HAYWOOD MEMORIAL BARISI-I HOUSE The Edgar Haywood Meniorial l'11risl1 House at St. Saviour's 111 Raleigh was built, fully equipped and donated by 1'jl'1lt'rT'f ll:1ywoo11 as a n1en1orial to his brother, Edgar Haywood, and was dedic-atezl on August 11, 151227, by the Right Reverend Joseph B. RELIGIOUS EDUCAT'ION The ailn of this Department is to help bring children closer to God in their worship and to build Christ-like characters. At Ravenscrofit School two periods Weekly are devoted to religious instruction. The curriculum is very flexible, bending to the questions and needs of the class. In general. there are drills in Church manners and reverence. The service used in daily Chapel exercises is explained, parts of it ineinorized, and appropriate hymns learned. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ALTAR GUILD NANCY L. -WILLIABISON The Altar Guild is composed of all members of the Iifth, sixth, and seventh grades. The Guild has charge of the altar in groups of two.
