Actwztzes of The Sczence Club The Freshmen and Sophomore Biology class of 49 50 organized a science club which they named The Inquisxtlve Searchers For their leaders they elected Charles Peters President Arthur Portlng Vice President Bertha Groves Secretary and .Tuamta Eynard Treasurer Several members were appomted to draw up a constitution which was officially adopted The first activity sponsored by the club was a stuffed animal display and lecture Very interesting reports were g1ven concerning the animals on parade The Inqu1s1t1ve Searchers certainly lived up to their name on that first field trip for they brought back most of the spec1mens for dissection which were used while studying the ten major animal phyla Other souvenirs of moss rocks flowers leaves and weeds were also gathered A panel discussion on Conservation was also a special feature m which all the biology students participated The topics discussed were l Every farmer has the right to do as he pleases in the use of the land that he owns 2 The state government should regulate the cutting of all forests 3 Conservation 1S everybody s problem Both sides to the flrst two topics were discussed which emphaslzed the purpose of a panel dxscussxon narnely to present what IS true and worth consldermg The students feel that they have gained much knowledge through thls panel discussion At Christrnas time the club members decorated the science room usmg the beautiful greens from Mother Nature Cedar branches and pine cones added to the festive axr and gave a pleasant odor to the room Of course there was the traditional Christmas tree This certainly Reports on the symptoms prevention and control of various poultry diseases proved to be very lnteresting This program was conducted by the Freshmen boys The program for the February club meeting included reports about experiments which showed the important factors for plant growth Some of these reports were entitled Seed Needs Air to Grow Sproutmg Seeds in a Classroom and Roots Turn Down Shoots Turn Up Also some experiments of flowers leaves and corn seed were explained to the class During the school year several films pertaining to the study of Biology were shown to the club Care of the Teeth was one important film shown which lllustrated the proper ways to keep teeth and gums healthy Educational films on wild animals and plant l1fe were also shown The members enjoyed them very much At dlfferent times durmg the club meetings Inquisxtlve Searchers gave interesting reports on their hobbles and other scientific subjects which proved that one can gam a lot of sc1ent1f1c knowledge and experience by having a hobby On some of the field trips in the Spring members collected wild flowers leaves and butterfhes The butterflies were mounted and exhiblted xn the science room Some of the leaves and wild flowers were pressed and mdentifled and placed in scrapbooks But all lnterestmg subjects must come to an end some time and as the school year reaches a close the lnquisxtive Searchers are happy knowing they ve galned much ln SC1CI'I'C1f1C tmnking They made experiments and have given reports pertaining to Biologic al problems They ve had a lot of fun accompanied with nard work and study and now they close their Biology text expecting to put It 1nto daily practlce Bertha Groves 52 Z . . . . . : , . 3 J ' u x , ' ' ' lent the spirit to the Science Club's first party. 7
