This insigne was chosen because the iroquois indians inhabited this area during the coionization oi our country. The quaiities which our indian symboi represents are made evident by the Centr ai indians in sports competition with other schoois and in our community. Their sports- man-iike attitude and their sense oi responsibiiity have been an exceiient exampie to others. Aithough they may not appear as evident, these quaiities are represented in aii our activities, which range from Varsity Ciub to Honor Society. He graduated from Oswego State Teachers College and joined the teaching staffatRavena-Coeymans High School in 1950. It is because he has been such a true friend that we wish to express our appreciation by dedicating MEMOIRS 1960 to MR. HA RRY S. STURGES. -i 9 Graduation represents what I hope will be regarded by each of you as a very im- portant event in your life. Its significance will depend largely upon what graduation means to you as an individual. To some it means the welcome end, the completion of a long and sometimes uneventful journeyf To others it is looked upon as the be- ginning, as representing a kind of induction into the world of adulthood, of work, of further education and of active, meaningful citizenship. The world we live in is changing rapidly. This imposes upon you many responsi- bilities, not the least of which is the awareness of change and the ability to adjust to it and cope with it. This is basically the challenge all people face. To the extent that you have been inspired to develop the quality of mind to be flexible and adaptable will you be equipped mentally to live productively and happily. The challenge of life and work, then, really begins upon graduation. I hope that you will often look back upon your experiences here with gratitude and the assurance that all of us who have served you have contributed significantly to your growth and development. - Good Luck! PRESCOTT ARCHIBALD, PRESIDENT One of the important issues which faced the Board of Edu- cation and the Administration for the second year was the prob- lem of double sessions for Grades 9-12. Great strides were made toward the solution of this particular problem in February when the citizens of our school district voted approval of the bond issue and the site for our long-awaited junior-senior high school. Barring unforseen delays, the present goal for completion of the building is September, 1962. We, the class of 1960, are happy to know that our classmates, the Freshmen, may be the first to graduate from our new school. The student body is indeed grateful to the Board of Educa- tion, the Administration and the interested citizens in our school district who have worked so untiringly to give us a good education. MR. They have carefully shown us paths which lead to success in our chosen courses ofstudy. ln addition to acting as our teachers, counse- lors and friends, our faculty serve us as class advisors and as sponsors for our extracurricular activities. The special teachers are responsible for many activities which help to widen the horizons of our school world. Their constant efforts to teach students throughout the entire district in special courses of music, art, sports, guidance and health, take much understanding and perseverance. Their contributions to our knowledge will be with us always, making our lives more rewarding and useful and giving us an opportunity to be better citizens in the progressive environment of tomorrow. Another outstanding contribution is the financial aid made available to students entering the field of education. The teachers and the example they have set will continue to assist us in our endeavors throughout the coming years. 4.- Bt MR. EDWARD CURRAN, Citizenship Education MR. Their first effort, the Black Slack Dance of November 21, was a complete success and encouraged them to work even harder toward their next event, a dance in February. This was followed by Cha ir man many more successful dances, among them The Beatnik Bop and, ofcourse, the junior prom. Everyone worked extremely hard on the latter and the result was truly gratifying. The Juniors were active in the other facets of high-school life. Many of the boys did admirably in sports, and a few of the girls contributed their athletic abilities to cheer- leading. There were Junior members in al- most all of the school organizations and many held important positions. A few were elected to Honor Society and there was an excellent Junior representation on the Honor Roll and Merit List throughout the year. SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL Under the leadership of Andy Palmer and the guidance of Mr. Gulak, the Student Council has been able to carry out many important projects. The first of these projects was the Halloween football game and dance, and the window paint- ing contest. At this same time, a successful campaign against Halloween vandalism was staged. The second major pro- ject was the annual Christmas Party at which a dramatic skit was presented. Then, the third project was the annual Ring Dance, a formal dance during which the Juniors were presented their rings. The last major project undertaken was to plan the program for the Moving-up Day exercises. To raise money, the Council presented the annual Student Council dance, planned for the taking of individual photo- graphs, and sold book covers. Also, to raise money for the athlete association, season basketball tickets were sold. Our local Council has been quite active in the A. S. C. C. D. , and has edited and published the newspaper of that organization. Our members attended this group's semi-annual conference. The Council has worked at a disadvantage because of the double sessions and has found it difficult to plan committee meetings. To facilitate matters, most meetings were held in the evening. The Council has established itself as a service organization, dedicated to aiding other Organizations. To accomplish this, a loan fund was set up and all other organizations were encouraged to borrow necessary funds from it. It has had four dances: Varsity Swing, Jingle Bell Rock, Champs through the Years and a Valentine Dance. The Club held an Election Day Bake Sale. They sold boxes of candy at the end of January. With the proceeds from all of these activities, they have donated a Trophy Case, which is to be erected in the Coeymans School, and they assumed the responsibility of cleaningxall the trophies that have been won by the teams throughout the years. They purchased new Green and Gold jackets for the members. VERNON This spring they took a trip to conclude their activities for the year. SCHERMERHORN President FUTURE NURSES CLUB The Future Nurses Club met the first Tuesday of every month. Their meetings were held at night because of double sessions. This year the club planned a different topic every month. They chose various health organizations and invited speakers to inform them about these organizations. Their program was as follows: November - Medical Secretary, December - The Tuberculosis Associationg January - The March of Dimes: February - The Heart Fund, March - The American Red Cross, May - Mental Health. Late in May, the club toured St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. In April, the club celebrated its third anniversary. The Future Nurses Club should be commended for its work and interest in the health of our community. as .,,r cz' 5 T s 'rx W, , X, LEFT TO RIGHT: Wittenburg, Frangella, Clouse, Dahl, Jones, Mrs. Tulloch, SUZANNE DAHL Mrs. Kuchis, Swartz, Denham, Farinelli, Marlow. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA FRANK ROSSI President The Future Teachers of America got off to a great start this fall. They planned exciting programs for their monthly meetings. The F. T. A. asked many very interesting people in the teaching profession to speak at their meetings. At the December meeting, Mrs. John Kessler talked to the group about the underprivileged child. Mr. Countaway also spoke about the role of the guidance counselor in education. Early in the fall the club members took a trip to Oneonta State Teachers College to see the campus and the students, The members were very interested to see the type of classes and the way the students lived. The F. T. A. also participated in a program designed to acquaint them with the students and the classroom. They enjoyed this since they learned what it was like to be a teacher. S This year six members of the yearbook staff ac- companied by two advisors, attended this con- 'E ference. While at the conference, they were ' able to observe the methods of other schools and bring back a few useful ideas. In june, the staff held its annual yearbook banquet. . , , h YEARBOOK EDITORS: Seufert, Hill, Smith. 47 Many of us fail to realize the importance of our school's music department. Much credit should be given them for their numerous performances. Mrs. McCabe directed and accompanied the two high school choruses, the Coeyrnans Junior High Chorus, and various ensembles, in addition to teaching several classes. The results of her efforts were seen in the Christmas Concert, December 17, a P. T. A. program, February 17: and the annual Spring Concert in March. The band is also an important part of the music department. Mr. McNaughton directs the band with the help of Mr. Trowbridge. Together, they have formed an excellent band which also took MT- MVNUUQUFOU MF- Tf0WbfidEC part in the P. T. A. program and the Spring Concert. The band marched for the Halloween Football Game and participated in the annual contest in May. Meanwhile, Mr. Ainspan directed the Jericho Junior High Chorus, which also participated actively in the P. T. A., Christmas and Spring Concerts. Looking back, we can see that both vocal and instrumental efforts, despite the handicaps of the double session, resulted in good listening for all. The theme, Oriental Gardens, was carried out by orange and black decorations with the traditional Japanese lanterns. To carry the theme further, the Juniors used a footbridge which led to a scenic waterfall. The footbridge was used as a throne for the king and queen. A few of the Juniors participated in designing a beautiful mural for the stage. As 11:30 approached the air was filled with anticipation and the crowds gathered to watch the entrance of the court. The former king and queen, Alan Lockwood and Sally Williams, appeared first and mounted the throne. Next came the Freshmen with the girls dressed in lavender. They were followed by the Sophomores in pink. The Seniors followed in blue. The Juniors appeared last in the traditional white. After everyone was assembled, Sally and Alan left thcir seat and walked down the aisle. Bernard Valentino and Linda Blaisdell were chosen as our new king and queen. Sally and Alan then relinquished their throne and Bernard and Linda reigned over the prom. Many of the students from 9- 12 have enjoyed the weekend dances. Some of the big dances the students enjoyed were the Prom and the Sno-Ball. These dances were very lovely and gave the students a chance to put on their best. The Cha-Cha was a favorite dance this year, but rock and roll wasn't far behind. All in all everyone has enjoyed and will long remember the dances at R-C-S. Our annual Christmas party consisted of a play, a visit from Santa, refreshments and dancing. CHAMPS This year there was a big change in the football standings of the R.C.S. Indians. ln their second year of 8-man competition, they were undefeated, winning not one, but two conference titles. The first title to fall to the R.C.S. eight was the Central Hudson Valley League, followed by the Little 8, a week later. This change was because of many things. One of the most important was team work. A second factor in this change was strong determination and the will to win, which brought the team over the rough spots. Last, but not least, was the excellent instruction of coach Russo. This was Mr. Russo's first year as head coach of the football team. In the over-all picture, the team's record speaks for itself. The offense scored 152 points in seven games for a 21. 7 average. Opponents found it im- possible to stop the fine runs by halfbacks Bernard Valentino and Vernon Schermerhorn. When the ground game began to slow up, quarterback Rick Kilmer brought things to life with on-the-spot passes to Tom Tucker and Ron D'Ambrosi. This was all make possible by great plays of linemen LeRoy Han- lon, Ted Morrell, and Tom Mastriano. Hard-nosed defensive play held opponents to only 19 points for the season. The line gave up mere inches grudgingly. R. C. S. 24 Chatham '7 R. C. S. 19 Ockaw amic 12 R. C. S. 33 Hunter-Tannersville O R. C. S. 26 Voorheesville O R.C.S. 6 Roe-Ian O R. C. HUB A S Ii E NFT B OA RL M A L L S This year the basketball team has had a very successful season. In league competition the Indians lost only one game, to end up with a league record of 12 and l. This jump, from fourth place in '58-'59 to first place in '59-'60, has been accomplished not only by excellent play but also by an unlimited amount of teamwork. Tom Tucker was the offensive leader of the backcourt combinationg Andy Palmer was the defensive spark plug. Bubby Van Derhyden and Jim Stalker aided the team with their ability to make baskets at any angle. Neal Fisher not only provided an excellent center for putting in those important points from under and around the bas- ket, but also was tops in hauling in defensive re- bounds. Aside from this, Neal virtually won the final games with Catskill and Voorheesville by scoring the final two points which tied and won these titles. ln handing out credit, let's not forget Coach Tucker. We sponsored dances and CLASS ADVISORS - FIRST ROW: Mr. Sharp, Miss Staley, Mr. Simpson, Mrs. Muller, Chairmang Mr. Doyle. other activities which helped to make our sophomore year a happy and prosperous one. We will never forget our junior year, for this was the biggest year of our lives. One of the main inci- dents of our junior year was the selection of our class rings. Every junior class has the opportunity to re- joice over their new class rings. We standardized our class rings and celebrated the event with a Ring Dance.
