T reasurer CLASS HISTORY HE HISTORY or THE CLASS or 1940 is so dramatic and colorful that it resembles a play-one of those modern plays that so skillfully disregard all the rules of the drama. With your kind permission, I, as dramatic critic of Ravena High School, will review the play called The Class of 1940 in an absolutely unbiased manner. T The curtain opens for the first act on the scene of the organization of the Freshman class, with the following officers: Carmen Sgroi, President, Ellen Phillips, Vice-President, Dorothy Halsted, Secretary, Henry Blenis, Tresaurerg and Wetona Jackson, Class Reporter, As the play continues, Freshmen are interested in new exercises called basketball, baseball and football and manage to attain a high degree of prowess in each. They suffer much agony and despair during this period of the play because of the social functions which they are required to attend in order to acquire poise and dignity. Act II shows the same cast in prominent parts, but they are now known as Sophomores, owing to an advance in rank. There are pleasant affairs in the form of dances, plays, and sports. In this act the mem- bers of the cast seem to have achieved a charm, an ease of manner, and a feeling of security that were noticeably lacking in Act I. Incipient love affairs are noticed and the costumes are very elaborate, as is the make-up used. The officers that were elected are as follows: Henry Blenis, President, Howard Westervelt, Vice-President, Dorothy Halsted, Secretary, John Tompkins, Treasurer, Wetona Jackson, Reporter. After eight weeks' intermission, the curtain is drawn for Act III. The actors are so changed that this act seems like an entirely new play. They are now called Juniors. Their positions and their pride have both advanced, but there remains the haunting dread of study, the villian. Many delightful interludes make this a cheerful actg namely, the Harvest Hop, the Junior Prom, and the Apple Blossom Ball, at which the two prominent cast mem- bers, Melvin Hotaling and Dorothy Halsted, appeared in a royal ceremony and were crowned King and Queen of Ravena High School. Carmen Albano, john Tompkins, Tony Scalzo and Kenneth Storr were members of the effective ballet presented at a Balloon Dance in this act. The final act is warmly received because, by this time, the actors are so matured, so at ease, so changed for the better, that they are difiieult to recognize as the shy, awkward, frightened persons of the Freshman class. The action is more rapid and more complicated than in preceeding acts. There is more comedy than before and there are some new interpolations. It is an act filled with money-making activities, such as the merchandising drive, selling popsicles and soda, the magazine drive, benefit movies, a bake sale and the Senior play, West End High. The merchandising drive and Senior play were the two outstanding activities. As in act III the organization of the Senior class was noteworthy with the following cast: Henry Blenis, President, Howard Westervelt, Vice-President, Dorothy Halsted, Secretary, john Tompkins, Treasurer, Wetona Jackson, Class Reporter. The grand climax of this act was the Washington and Virginia tour during Easter vacation. Throughout the play numerous minor actors helped to knit the action together. Many of these parts, taken by faculty members, exercised considerable influence in bringing about the changes already mentioned-such as the gradual conversion of a group of gawky, semi- ignorant children into intelligent, school citizens. In the opinion of this critic, it will be a long time before another play of such greatness will be presented in the theatre of Ravena High School, but I am also of the opinion that this group will be seen and heard from in the future. I want to express the deep regret, That all now feel to leave The many chums we won't forget While our future we weave. These halls will ever echo chatter Of voices that used to cheer, The talk of a future president, An author you'll sometime hear. To some the future may look dark. But wait 'till we begin. We'll aim for the highest mark, Who says that we can't win? MARJORIE PECK Pago Scnnuen CLASS WILL WE, THE CLASS OF 1940, village of Ravena, town of Coeymans, county of Albany, and State of New York, in 41 distinct parts, being about to pass out of this sphere of education, in full possession of a crammed mind, well-trained memory and an almost superhuman understanding, do make and publish this, our last will and testament, in the manner following: ITEM: To the faculty we give and bequeath all the amazing knowledge and startling information that we have furnished from time to time in our examination papers. We trust they will feel at liberty to make use of all the wisdom and enlightenment for the education of the classes to come after us. This of course, is left entirely to their own judgement. ITEM: To Mr. Deisseroth, our principal, we give and bequeath our sincere affection, our heartiest gratitude and the whole unlimited wealth of our eternal memory. It shall be his pleasure to watch every step of our upward and onward Hitting-to note each trial, each attempt, each victory, each success and honor that we may achieve in the arena of the world and to accept for himself, every ounce of praise, every iota of the honor, knowing that it is all due to the faithful instructions we received from him. ITEM: To Mr. Miller and Mr. McClelland we leave the balance of our class treasury to be used to buy a pair of rubber-soled shoes for detective work during their stay in Washington. ITEM: To the football team of next year we leave the ability of Carmen Albano, Kenneth Storr and Carmen Sgroi. fWe couldn't pursuade Melvin Hotaling to leave hisj. ITEM: To Don Richter we leave Tony Scalzols ability to get the most beautiful girl in Washington. ITEM: To Kenny Klenk we leave Dorothy Halsted's musical ability. It is said that music hath charm to sooth the savage beast. ITEM: To Alice Craw we give Anne Whippleis ability in orchestra to watch Miss Dennis and the audience at the same time. Anne may have lost a measure or skipped a beat occasionally-but she never missed anything or anybody in the audience. ITEM: To Floyd Tompkins we leave Kenny Storr's ability in sports. With it goes Kenny's place on the all-league team next year. ITEM: Henry Blenis leaves his wisdom and knowedge of physics to Marcy Tinkle. Marcy will need them. ITEM: Helen Wiltsie's ability to snap gum we leave to Eleanor Hummer-with a book of instructions. ITEM: jane Wally's quiet manner and sweet disposition we leave to Bernie O'Sullivan. Jane was said to be the quietest girl in the school. ITEM: To Shirley Jarvis we leave Thelma Lee's patented giggle and her cultivated lisp, which was so effective in and out of the Senior play. ITEM: To Bill Gallagher we leave Billy Pemberton's technique. Still water runs deep. We also leave him the map of Washington and floor plan of the Carroll Arms. ITEM: To the Junior class we are going to leave Mr. Chipp and our old History C note- books. We hope you will be as studious as we were during the last two weeks. ITEM: To the basketball team of next year we leave the privilege of polishing the trophies won this year. Page eighteen ITEM: To Arnold Rarick we leave the one and only Jessie Court. ITEM: To next year's class president we leave, with grave doubts as to his ability to use it, the stentorian voice of our good president, Henry Blenis, which enabled him to over- come all opposition and to prevent others from knowing opposition existed. Also, we leave his ability to keep on good terms with the faculty, and still do as he pleases- in other words we leave his strategy. ITEM: To the Dramatic Club we leave Marjorie Peck's varied and surprising talent. A talent that could interpret a character with so much originality that its own author wouldn't know it. ITEM: To Ravena High School we bequeath our illustrious deeds and our names as candi- dates for its Hall of Fame. We also leave the peaceful quiet caused by our absence and any old notes we have left crumpled behind the radiators. ITEM: Dale Setford's lavender shirt Cnot to mention his tiesl we leave to Donald Kniffen. The color should be becoming. ITEM: Fern's ability to sell the SCARLET TANAGER we leave to Shirley Fiescher. ITEM: Jimmy Pebler's suit case we leave to jimmy Brandow, so that next year he can collect an equal number of souvenirs. ITEM: Wilbur Thayer's military ability we leave to Ralph Wells. ITEM: To Miss King and Miss Bergen we leave the memory of many escapades without which we are sure their lives would have been less interesting. We also leave our very kindest regards, and sincere gratitude for their unfailing kindness and aid during our years in high school. ITEM: Dorothy Meyer's ability to make friends we leave to Mabel Miller. We also leave Mabel Dorothy's list of nice cheerleaders in other schools. For instance, at Waterford we have a charming gentleman named Freddie. ITEM: Carmen Albano's self-confidence we leave to Harold Collins. Not that Harold hasn't any, but Carmen has so much. ITEM: The ability of Shirley Carl to take care of Mr. Deisseroth's oflice needs, we leave to Marion Stalker. It is often said, A little kindness goes a long way. Could that be Shirley's secret? ITEM: To Eleanor White we leave Ellen Phillips' domineering way. We hope Eleanor will put it to its best use. ITEM: To the Junior boys we leave the ability to do a balloon dance the way the Seniors did. To lead the dance we pick a very capable, young Sophomore, named Robert Gallagher, who they say, has beautiful legs. ITEM: We feel that our brilliant record and our unusual achievements will live after us, but not wishing 'to take any chances, we suggest that a tablet on which shall be inscribed our names and a few of our most astonishing deeds, be purchased and placed in the audi- torium of the school in a position where it will strike the eye of all who enter. But you have often heard of the old say- ing, The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agleyf, Let's look into my prophet's crystal to see what fate has in store for my classmates. The mist is clearing. A village scene appears. I see a church. The bells are ringing. It is Sunday morning. I see a lawyer-a fine looking man-and by his side walks his wife. They are much loved by the congregation. Her face is turned away, but I can see it is some one we know. Now she turns 5 I see her face. It is Lois Jackson, looking very happy and appearing to be an ideal lawyer's wife. The mist turns gray, then clears to show the dome of the United States Capitol. A bus passes slowly by. There's a sign on the side reading, Pemberton Tours, Successor to Tuttle Tours. I did think there was something funny when Pemmy talked confidentially for four hours to Mr. Tuttle on our Senior Class trip. Now the scene changes to a corner in Washington. A crowd gathers around a man mounted on a soap box. He holds their atention by declaiming, When I am president of the United States Cwhich I am positive of beingj I will give you anything you want-five dollars a day and beds instead of shovels. Yes, Henry Blenis was always a generous fellow in school. The mist clears to show a football practice. The school is Ravena and the year is 1960. One of the players is saying, Listen to me, fellows. I've been playing for four years-I'll show you how to play. He reminds me of a fellow I went to school with. A little short man shouts, You go to the showers. I don't allow bragging here. Is that little fellow the coach? Yes-he is! It's Carmen Sgroi. Soft lights-beautiful colors-music-and a group of costumed people. The great stage of the Metropolitan Opera House. A man steps to the front of the stage, he pauses, he stretches out his arms. As the orchestra plays softly, Antonio Stelvatcho, the greatest tenor of all times, bursts forth into melody- I's a-coming. Unbelievable, but true, no one but dear old Anthony Scalzo. Who is the man at the door of the garden who is being interviewed by that group of reporters? It's John Tompkins, the antique collector, who has just purchased a clock that Louis XVI made. I see an enormous room with a large desk in the center. On the desk is a huge pile of letters. A middle-aged lady opens the letters, reads them and busily dictates answers to them. The lady is Anne Whipple, who has taken Dorothy Dix's place in giving advice to the love-lorn. There's a little parlor forming in the crystal, as I look I see two old people. This seems to be the year 1990. The little old lady says, Mel darling, isn't it wonderful how we stuck together ever since we left school. He answers, Yes, Jeanie darling, it's because I couldn't find anyone as nice as you. Do you know who these two old people are? Of course you do-they are Melvin Hotaling and Jean Van Slyke, graduates of the class of 1940. The scene becomes noisy. Buzzings and ringings fill the ear. I see a long room around the sides of which are seated many girls. It is a telephone ofiice. And the head operator is Dorothy Meyer. I knew her as soon as she said, Line's busy. She always did spend most of her time telephoning and seems to have concluded she might as well make some money at it. It's census time again-I see a door being slammed and a man hurriedly rushing down the porch steps. He mops his perspiring brow and wearliy plods on to the next house. Poor Dale Setford is decidedly unpopular as the census taker with bigger andbetter questions. In the cool, clear waters of the North Sea a yacht lies at anchor. Its name, Ravenean, makes me think the owner must be an acquaintance of ours. A very substantial figure now appears on deck and scans his surroundings with an approving eye. He beckons to a steward and says, Tell the captain we'll sail for Ravena tomorrow. I have some old friends there I'd like to see before I start around the world again. It is Howard Westervelt, a multi- millionaire chicken fancier. But something is happening. A crowd of people are coming on deck. He has been home and brought his old friends back with him for a cruise. I see them all-every one of his classmates. They look prosperous and happy. The sun sets and the light fades grad- ually. The crystal clouds and I can see no more. Cf., Under the watchful eyes and guiding hands of Mr. McClelland and Mr. Miller, the junior Class is governed by Myron Boice, Presidentg Leland Osterhout, Vice-Presidentg Floyd Tompkins. Secretary and Bill Gallagher, Treasurer. Floyd Tompkins is Vice- President and Donald Kniffen is Treasurer of the Student Council This class of forty-nine members has sponsored a Harvest Hop, the May Dance, a Bake Sale and the Junior Prom to raise money for their forthcoming jaunt to Washington. The Juniors are represented in almost every club. Marcy Tinkle is Editor-in-Chief of the SCARLET TANAGER while Kenny Klenk, Alice Craw and Edna Rossi edit the Sports, Tongue Waggles and the Literary Column respectively. In dramatics Eleanor Hummer had leading parts in the R. H. S. presentations for the Play Contest. Don Richter, Kenny Klenk, Bill Gallagher and Floyd Tompkins were on the varsity basketball team. Gallagher was the only player in the Central Hudson Valley League to receive a unanimous vote by the coaches for a position on the all-league first squad, and Richter made the second team. With Louie Montelone, Presidentg Barbara Phillips, Vice-Presidentg Matthew Parker, Treasurerg Roberta Iobson, Secretary and Miss Arnold, Class Advisor, the Sophomore Class is proceeding according to schedule. Members of the Class of 1942 are active in extra-curricular activities and the football and basketball teams are fortunate in having Louie Montelone, Robert Gallagher, Walter jackson, George Marcella and john Ginter, all Sophomores, give their aid in defeat- ing other schools. The drum major is also a Sophomore. This title goes to Marie Hannibal, who also helps lead the cheering section along with Barbara Phillips and Carmen Pomellitto. Angie Amedio and Barbara Phillips are the Sophomore representatives on the Girls' Athletic Club. The class sold pins, had a benelit movie, a cafeteria and the annual Strawberry Shindig to raise money for the trip to Washington in their Senior year. THR FRESHMAN CLASS navigated by Miss Jones, may be proud of the large addition it is making to the high school membership. Of these the oflicers of the class elected at the annual class meeting were Robert Ruxton, President, David Wade, Vice-Presidentg Audrey Fiescher, Secretary and Jean Holliday, Treasurer. Robert and David also rep- resent the class on the Student Council. The first attempt at money raising for the Senior trip, a beneht movie, was successful to the extent of twenty-two dollars. Another movie was held before school closed. This class is prominent in extra-curricular activities. It has more participants on the staff of the school paper than any other class, three members in the International Relations Club: two Freshmen participated in the Play Contest and several are members of the Drama- lics Club, There is no shortage of athletics in this up-and-coming Freshman Class either. There were tive men on the Junior Varsity team last season and it has a noon-hour team. The model Republican Convention held by the eighth grade history class during March received much attention and was, perhaps, the major event of the oncoming Freshman Class. Under the chairmanship of Francis Mitch, the committee nominated Thomas Dewey for President and Arthur Yandenburg for Vice-President. Climax of the convention came when these two political figures acknowledged the letters of notihcation sent to them, During basketball season the Ravena girls beat the eighth grade girls of Coeymans High School in a game at Coeymans conducted by the physical education classes. William Makely, Francis Mitch, Samuel Pomellitto and Josephine Whipple represent the eighth grade in the school band, while Shirley Carkner reports grade activities to the SCARLET TANAGER. josephine Whipple was elected to the Student Council. Under the advisorship of Rodney B, Chipp, history instructor, class atfairs were managed by Olga Halsted, President, Howard Bishop, Vice-Presidentg Shirley Carkner, Secretary and Shirley Travis, Treasurer. 1 X FRESHMAN CLASS EIGHTH GRADE Page lwlnlyzf SEVENTH GRADE FOURTH - SIXTH GRADES THE SEVENTH GRADE, consisting of forty-seven pupils, started its career in high school under the guidance of Miss McVean, who was forced to leave owing to illness. Later Miss Tyler became advisor. Odicers of the class are George Fiescher, President and Representative on Student Councilg Eugene Hummer, Vice-President, Audrey Gombel, Treasurer and Raymond Mangan, Secretary. The Seventh Grade in connection with the Eighth Grade formed a junior band under the direction of Mr. Lyden. This is the first year that a seventh grade has been admitted into the Library Club. The boys of the class make up a large part of the seventh-eighth grade basketball team, coached by Mr. McClelland. South Bethlehem, St. Patrick's, Selkirk, Coeymans and Ravena make up the league. St. Patrick's won the league with Ravena holding second place. GRADES EOUR THROUGH six of the elementary school are found on the first floor. Here are the students who will soon be our future high school citizens. The fourth grade, under Miss Schryer, has completed a history frieze on life from early man to the Romans. Coinciding with their subjects a picture scrapbook of original draw- ings on the European countries and Africa has been made. The fourth and fifth grades have concentrated much of their time on their Tonette and Harmonica Band, which is under the direction of Miss Dennis and Miss Schryer. The band has thirty-five members consisting of fourteen harmonicas from the fourth grade and twenty-one tonettes from the fourth grade. The fifth grade has also completed wall panels of New York State and the United States and a history frieze of life in the Middle Ages. The sixth grade, supervised by Miss Cole, has finished a model of New Amsterdam as it was in the earlv settlement of New Netherlands. Because the students are inter- ested in history now in the making in Europe, the class has a Current Events Club. P' 1 Ar, . Tin-1 FIRST GR,-Xllli under the guidance of Miss Elston has learned about home and com- munity life. 'l'hey illustrated their work by building a house and later changing it into a grocery store. 'l'he second grade in charge of Miss Ramsey has studied about Indians, transportation and the community. During the year they visited the local post otlice. The second graders have enjoyed putting daily clippings in a news book which they made. They have learned to do cursive writing and have written many stories and letters. The third grade with the help of Miss Chase discussed the environment of the Eskimos and their ways of living. 'l'hey have been very active in building a post otlice and librarv. l'he third graders also have enjoyed feeding and watching a pair of ducks, named Donald and Dora. housed in their room for a brief period. Drktxo the last year. the Industrial Arts Department has grown, both in courses and equipment. When the shop was tirst opened only comprehensive general shop was taught. Now general shop. general metal and a girls' arts and crafts course are offered. Next year another course, general woodwork will be added. With those three courses students will be able to obtain a major in shop. Approximately one hundred and forty pupils are enrolled in shop courses. This in- cludes twenty-six girls of the eighth grade, who are working in the arts and crafts course. Among the projects turned out this year the largest undertaking was the electric score board. This contained 350 feet of wire and 44 bulbs. Another was the scenery for the Fhristmas play. 'l'he jobs turned out for individual use included such articles as metal tables, ash trays, fruit and sandwich dishes and sewing cabinets, FIRST - THIRD GRADES INDUSTRIAL ART ' I Page twenty-:even SCARLET TANAGER Page twenty-eight CAP AND GOWN l SCARLET TANAGER, oflicial publication of Ravena High School, pursued a policy different from that of other years under the new management of Miss Edna M. Jones, Advisor, and Marcy Tinkle, Editor. Published every fourth Wednesday, except when holidays interfered, the subscription rate was reduced to half that of former years. The staff, chosen on a competitive basis, helped with the general make up, headlining, dummy- ing and copy reading of the paper as well as covering various assignments. Among the active issues introduced and sponsored by the TANAGER, both in news stories and editorials, was the proposition of changing the name of the paper. This question was defeated by the student body in a general election in assembly. As members of the Empire State Scholastic Press Association and the Columbia Press Association the TANAGER was represented at E. S. S. P. A. convention held in Syracuse and entered competition at the Columbia conference held in New York City during March. Although plans for the coming school year have not yet been completed, there is a possibility that the Scarlet Tanager may be published at shorter intervals during the school year and that pictures may be used to add to the general make-up of the paper. CAP AND GowN, the Ravena High School annual, was reorganized last year after an absence of ten years under the advisorship of Miss Edna M. Jones, mathematics teacher. Since every available copy was sold and as it was considered both a literary and financial success, the future of CAP AND GOWN was assured. Chosen on a competitive basis CAP AND GOWN editorship was awarded to Dorothy Meyer while the following appointments were announced by Miss jones: Carmen Sgroi, business managerg Fern Guyot, circulationg Dorothy Halsted, patrons, Wetona Jackson, photographsg and Anne Whipple, Margie Peck and Helen Wiltsie, features. That the book improve yearly, meet with more success each year, establish a firm tradition in the hearts of all Ravenians, and preserve the pleasant memories of high school days-these are the desires of the CAP AND GOWN staff. rrlili STUDICNT Couxcu. this year has served for the most part as an advisory body. They also decided on a system to earn their pins, instead of merely purchasing them. According to this system a Wig member if he helps put on a play, participates in one. or in some way b, will receive a certain number of credits on which the awarding Craw Vice-Presidentg Audrey Fi gives publicity to the clu of pins will be based. At Christmas time this year the Wigs combined with the Glee Club and presented a pageant about the birth of Christ before both the P. T. A. and the student body. Last year Ravena High School took first place and a cup at the annual Play Contest. This year the group came in first again with a play named Sugar and Spice. The fol- lowing people took part: Audrey Fiescher, Robert Gallagher, Eleanor Hummer, Emma O'Brien and Dale Setford. This dramatic club, under the supervision of Miss Margaret Bergen, at the first meeting of the year had try-outs and chose twenty-five members. TO AROUSE INTEREST in foreign affairs based upon knowledge rather than emotion is the purpose of Ravena High School's International Relations Club. Elected as officers for the school year 1939-1940 were Henry Blenis, Presidentg Anne Whipple, Yice-Presidentg Alice Craw, Secretary-Treasurer and jessie Court, Librarian. Under the advisorship of Rodney B. Chipp, the I. R. C. met monthly, at which time club activities and world problems were discussed. Among the year's outstanding events in which the club participated were the Albany Foreign Policy Association's Conferences in November and May. Taking an active part in the first conference during the morning and afternoon sessions, the group attended lectures held at Chancellors Hall in the evening. ' ' - ' -'V tfrat'o-dav Llimaxing the year s activities was the annual trip to Poultney, ermon o w , conference with the various international relations clubs of surrounding areas. Among the many activities of the orchestra this year were performances at many P. T. A. meetings. the annual Prize Speaking Contest, Christian and Methodist church fairs and at most regular assemblies. A subsidiary of the regular orchestra, the jazz orchestra. which is made up of Carmen Albano, Carmen and john Perrine, Anthony Scalzo and Miss Dennis. has provided music after all home basketball games, at the Senior Play, the Womens Club Fashion Show and innummerable other functions. Miss Dennis directs both orchestras. Members of the regular orchestra include clarinets. Frances Mitseh. Tm: BAND, under the direction of Mr. James Lyden of Albany and the leadership of Marie Hannibal as drum major, has had an active year. Susan Phillips has shown her ability by lending a very helpful hand to Marie Hannibal and it is hoped that she will con- tinue as a minor drum major. At the annual Labor Day parade the band marched in full form. Among other activities, the group played in the Neutrality Parade in Coxsackie, the Safety program over W.0.K.0.. the Spring Festival held at Bethlehem Central, and another parade in Coxsackie on Decoration Day. Carmen Pomellitto and john Perrine, two of the outstanding members of the band, played numbers at the Annual Festival held at Hudson in May. Mr. Lyden is forming a junior band of the younger members of the high school. lt is anticipated that this will help as well as increase the band. ORCHESTRA BAND Page thirlj , -, . . .a-f.-W. . .. X ,, , GLEE CLUB Page thirty-I CHEER- LEADERS THIS YEAR the Glee Club participated in the Spring Festival held at Beth- lehem Central High School on April 26, 1940. This was the first festival of this kind to be held in the Central Hudson District. Ravena, Coeymans, Castleton, Altamont, Berne and Bethlehem took part and are expected to form the Big Six and have an annual program. The Glee Club presented The Viking Songl' and Dear Land of Home, which were practised from the beginning of January. The mass chorus sang Glory to Him and was led by a guest conductor. The club also rendered several numbers at a meeting of the P. T. A. A chorus oi twelve sopranos was elected from the large group, which provided a musical background for The Bethlehem Shepardsf' a pageant presented by the Wigs. The Glee Club has been under the instruction of Mr. Fred Kalohn of Albany and has studied many types of music. It was taken over by Mr. Kalohn in December of 1939. To complete the year the club sang for the commencement exercises in June. THis YEARiS cheering squad consisted of four girls, Wetona Jackson, Dorothy Meyers, Barbara Phillips and Marie Hannibal, and three boys, Glen Townsend, Herbert Hamlin and Carmen Pomellitto. The Student Council this year provided the girls with black sweaters and red corduroy skirts in the collegiate manner. Cheering at all of the basketball and football games, they were said to be the best the school has had in many years. At the beginning of basketball season the squad was divided into two groups. In one group were the boys who cheered for the junior varsity, in the other were the girls, cheering for the varisty. Wetona jackson and Dorothy Meyer will leave at the end of the school term. Wetona has been a varsity cheerleader since she was in the eighth grade and head cheerleader since 1937, while Dorothy was elected to the squad in 1938 by the student body. Yndypb W crawl! RAyt:N,x's 1939 football season under the direction of Coach Clifford Clinton proved to be the most successful in its history. The squad was fast, alert, shifty and never showed signs of letting up. They overpowered all their opponents and ended the season with tive victories and no defeats. The regular team consisted of Kenny Storr, right endg Bill Gallagher. left end, Carmen Albano, centerg Lottie Montelone, quarter backg james Marcella, full backg Carmen Sgroi, quarter backg Don Richter. half back. and Melvin Hotaling, half back. Ravena had some excellent reserves in Henry Blenis, Louie Caracciolo, Robert Gallagher, john Gombel. john Ginter, Neil Hallenbeck. Kenny Rlenk, George Marcella, Dale Setford, and Harold VVells. The scores of the games were Ravena 35, Roeliff Jansen 05 Ravena 48, Castleton Og Ravena 48, Roessleville 205 Ravena 25, Coxsackie Og and Ravena 22, Coeymans ti. Although the squad will lose a number of players by graduation and age, next year's team is expected to be as strong as this year's. Vllllli '39 TR.-xck sii, xsoN of Ravena High School is another success story. The team under the coaching of Mr. lNIcClelland placed second in the Central Hudson Yalley meet and also second in the New York State Sectional meet. Ravena was subdued by Bethlehem Ct-ntral's more superior track team, which is a Class C school. Ravena then came back to overwhelm Coxsackie in a one-sided affair by taking all events but one. It was stated that Ravena's track team was about the best Class D track team in this section of the state and if they had more candidates out for track. they probably wottld have won the sectional meet in 1939. The team, coached by Clifford Clinton, won fourteen out of sixteen games, losing only to Cairo and a strong Class B, Waterford High School. Ravena High School captured the Central Hudson Valley High School Basketball League championship and sportsmanship trophies. The high lights of the season were defeating Catskill, a Class B school, and a strong Kinderhook squad. The squad consisted of twelve men, who included six seniors, four juniors and two sophomores. Those who will be missing next season are Carmen Sgroi, Captain, Kenneth Storr, Tony Scalzo, Melvin Hotaling, Carmen Albano, and Frank Seeberger. Those who return are Don Richter, Bill Gallagher, Floyd Tompkins, Louie Montelone, Robert Gallagher and Kenny Klenk. Ravena placed four members of the squad on the all-league teams: Bill Gallagher and Kenny Storr for first team honors and Louie Montelone and Don Richter for the second team. LAST YEAR Ravena's baseball nine was under the leadership of Mr. Chipp. Bad breaks trailed Ravena all last season and were responsible for their winding up the season some- what unsuccessfully with a record of two wins and four loses. The .400 hitting of Bill Gallagher, Melvin Hotaling and Carmen Sgroi featured in Ravena's offensive work at the plate last season. Bill Gallagher led the Red and Black batters by maintaining a .444 batting average. Hotaling, a slugging iniielder, and Sgroi, a hitting pitcher, were running to Bill Gallagher with batting averages of .431 and .421 respectively. Carmen Sgroi established himself as a pitcher when he shut out Coxsackie 9-0 by pitching a one hit ball game against the Indians. The veterans who have returned include Carmen Sgroi, Kenny Klenk, Melvin Hotaling, Leonard Richardson, Bill Gallagher, Don Richter and Floyd Tompkins. Capable rookies include Kenny Storr, Harold Wells, Louie Montelone and Robert Gallagher. liowI.1NG is a comparatively new sport at Ravena High School. Inaugurated into the school's athletic curriculum four years ago and placed under the advisorship of Mr. Chipp, it is becoming more popular with the students each year. It is hoped that in the future, bowling will take its place among the major sports of Ravena High. This year's team consisted of six fellows, Sam Diacetis, Henry Blenis, Francis Shader, George and lidward Marcella and VVilliard jones. Captain Sam Diacetis led his team with an average of 152, a high single of 209, high triple of 529. George Marcella was close behind with 147 average and Shaders' 197 and Blenis' 1813 were second and third high singles. This year's team participated in the regular schedule of the Central Hudson Valley Bowling League and in the All-League Bowling Congress at the Palace Alleys in Albany at the close of the season. The purpose of the Yarsity Club is to further school spirit and provide the senior members with sweaters as an award for their achievements in sports at Ravena High School. One of the most important factors of the meetings was skull practices, which were conducted by the coach, Mr. Clinton. At the first meeting of the Yarsity Club under the chairmanship of Mr. Clinton, otlicers were elected and a constitution was drawn up. The following were elected: Carmen Sgroi, President, Donald Richter, X'icc-President, Dale Setford, Secretaryg james Marcella, Treasurer, During the course of the year the club sponsored various activities, such as benetit movies and a football dance, which were both socially and financially successful. Since the members felt that a reorganization of the constitution was necessary in order to meet the ideals of the organization, a point system was installed which would limit the member- ship to those who have attained highest athletic achievements.
