EL TIGRE 74 Prepared by Josie Aragon Denise Barnes Louise Cochran Tony DiLisio Ted Hall Paula Martin Frank Mascarenas Deanna Perkovich Donna Raught Charlotte Ruiz Ingrid Smoker Advisor Mary Nell Mileta Raton High School Raton, New Mexico THE BIG WHEEL THE WHEEL We, the Annual Staff of Baton High School, chose the wheel as the symbol for our 1974 theme. Do you know what is the only basic invention that man did not find in nature? It wasn't fire—for lightening can cause a fire, it wasn’t the lever, nor the inclined plane for they are found in nature. It was the wheel. Nearly every thing von do today somehow involves the use of the wheel. There was a time, long long ago when the early people of the world had no wheels of any kind. Man has had to develop this idea, his greatest invention, out of his own mental ability. Fire is Man's greatest discovery, the wheel his greatest invention. Through the years the wheel has changed very little but has helped greatly in everyday life. From the solid wheel came the wheel with spokes, which made the wheels stronger and lighter. Each spoke served a purpose, when a spoke was broken or missing the wheel was weakened. The spoked wheel is similar to man's society. Without the interaction of people and their activities society too is weakened. The students and organization of R.H.S. represent the spokes of the wheel. When they all work together we have an organization as strong as a wheel. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRA SOPHOMO CLUBS JUNIORS ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES SENIORS.. INDEX.... ADV The 1974 Raton High School Annual Staff wishes to dedicate this year’s annual to Miss Elwanda Morene Allen. Miss Allen was horn on July 24, 1921 in Mineral Wells, Texas. In 1942 Miss Allen graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelors of Science in education. She attended Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado and obtained her Masters degree in physical education in 1950. After graduation from college she taught school at Frenship High School, Wolforth, Texas during the 1942-43 school year. She then came to Raton High School during 1943, and has remained here for 31 years. She was the president of the Raton Classroom Teachers Association in 1956-57. She has broadened her education by attending classes at Highlands University, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, University of Denver, University of Delaware, University of Illinois and Adams State College. Miss Allen is the girls P.E. teacher, math teacher, and the coach of the Tigerettes. She led the 1973 girls volleyball team to the state tournament at Portales, New Mexico. She also directed the girls in basketball which had a successful season, obtaining fourth place in the district tournament. Thank you Miss Allen for all your help. ‘Public . Miss Allen has served well in many capacities. She is always willing to assume new assignments and extra duties. No responsibility is too great or too small for her to accept and fulfill competently. I feel that the Raton Schools are fortunate to have Miss Allen as a member of their faculty. We, in the Raton Schools, are all proud of the many achievements and contributions made by Miss Allen to her profession, her school, and her community. The program is designed to allow sophomores to take a preparatory D.E. class and junior and senior students to go to school in the morning and work in marketing and distribution in the afternoon. But that’s not all. D.E. has a club called D.E.C.A. (Distributive Education Clubs of America). All D.E. students are members of D.E.C.A. and are involved in the many projects required to compete against other schools in New Mexico for state and national honors. L. To R. Back Row: Jaini Christie, Secretary Glen Stilinovich, President Erlinda Encinias, Vice-President Doyle Onstott, Chaplin Carolyn Romero, Parliamentarian Front Row: Christine Mondragon. Treasurer Charlene Mondragon, Historian What kind of student do you have to be to be a D.E. student? First of all, you have to be a “Doer and a “Giver . We have little room for those who want to take from others and sit while others participate. You will also have to be willing to work (do an adult’s job) for your employer. D.E. students accept an adult's responsibility while on the job. They also receive adult respect appreciation as well as the pay. In conclusion, D.E. students must be able to smile, ! e people who enjoy other people. 35 O.E.A. I. To H Back HOW: Penny Scott, (.'harlot te Hill ., Paula Mar tm.
