With these pages, we the 1973 Annual Staff, wish to preserve for you the memorable seasons in which you were a student at Raton High School. The Raton High School Annual Staff proudly dedicates the 1973 El Tigre to Mr. Herbert Wylie Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was born in Dawson, New Mexico, August 22, 1935. He attended elementary school in Dawson and came to Raton when he was in the ninth grade. While at Raton High School, he was selected as a Junior Rotarian, elected co-president of F.T.A., and was an active member of chorus and student council. He was awarded the Dawson High School scholarship to New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. After graduating from Raton High School in 1954, Mr. Mitchell attended college at Highlands where he received his B. A. and M.A. in English. He is certified to teach philosophy, social studies, English, speech, and drama. He served as an officer in the United States Navy for four years, and then came to Raton in 1964 to accept a teaching position in the Raton Public School system. He left in the fall of 1965 to teach at the Jr. College in La Junta, Colorado, but returned to Raton in 1966. He has been on the faculty since that time. Mr. Mitchell is active in various professional organizations for teachers. He is now president of the New Mexico Association of Classroom Teachers, has held this position for the local C. T.A. and Northern New Mexico Education Association, and has been on numerous committees in the state. He has spent many hours as a student council sponsor, Mask and Wig sponsor, and director of the plays performed by Mask and Wig every spring. Mr. Mitchell is a friend to all of us at R.H.S. and is willing to help at anytime. It is with the highest admiration and thanks, that we at Raton High School dedicate the 1973 El Tigre to our teacher and friend, Mr. Herbert Wylie Mitchell. But long enough to sow his death-seeds down. Why ever grieve for all this bitter strife Since Spring returns with certainty and pride To frozen Earth with promise of new life With Nature her assistant and her guide. The flowers that Winter killed will grow again And cloaks of green adorn each naked tree With Nature’s healing sun and soothing rain. With wordless blueprints from eternity Nature will reproduce the broken parts, Make flowers grow from old roots in the sod When we can’t grow new arms and make new hearts, Don’t question man but ask Almighty God. “From HOLD APRIL by Jesse Stuart.
