EL TIGRE 1971 Presented by: The Annual Staff Raton High School Raton, New Mexico 4 Table of Contents Administration 11 Seniors 21 Royalty and Honors 41 Juniors 55 Organizations 67 Sophomores 93 Sports 107 Advertising 123 I Dedication Mr. John Krivokapich It is with honor and great pride that the Raton High School Annual Staff dedicates the 1971 El Tigre to Mr. John Krivokapich. Mr. Krivokapich, affectionately known as Krivo, was born in Dawson, New Mexico on June 30, 1917. He attended Columbian Elementary School, Raton Junior High and was graduated from Raton High School on May 28, 1936. He attended Eastern New Mexico University and received a B.S. in agriculture education from New Mexico State University. He now holds a M.A. in education with 30 additional hours of graduate work. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps where .he held the position of major in the 4th Marine Division. Mr. Krivo and his wife. Mary, have two daughters, Janine and Beverly. Both girls graduated from RHS as outstanding students. Janine graduated from Stanford in 1969 and is currently in her second year of medical school at Harvard. Beverly graduated from New Mexico State University in 1970 and is teaching in California. Mr. Krivo has been an outstanding citizen of Raton. He taught for ten years in the Raton Schools. He instructed classes in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, biology, and agriculture. He served for eleven years as principal of Longfellow School and is in his eighth year as principal of Raton High School. He was mayor of Raton from 1961 to 1963. He is very active in Kiwanis, a member of the Elks Club. Scottish Rite of the Masonic Lodge, NEA-NM, North Central Accrediting Association, Legislation and Finance Commission of NEA-NM. and a past president of NNMEA. Mr. Krivo is known for the great concern that he has for every student in RHS. He is interested in what happens to Raton High School. Mr. Krivo, we salute you and dedicate the El Tigre to you with deep gratitude. 2 Expressions of 1970-71 The 1970-71 school year of Raton High School was laced with many varied and memorable experiences. These pages merely reflect the work and toil, the fun and play, of that unforgettable year. These memories will come forward bringing a smile, perhaps a tear, but always a distant gaze at a moment past. But it was the expressions that made these memories. Do you remember when— twenty members of the Class of 1971 were recognized for their expressions in academic achievement; Amie jubilantly reigned as prom queen; student council officers relaxed after a vigorous campaign; and the ag boys expressed their toil while fencing the sports fields. Your current expression, your past expression, your expression—expressions are the very soul of R.H.S. 5 A building is cold, inanimate until it has a purpose to serve. This building we call Raton High School was only steel, concrete, and bricks until it was populated by you, the students and faculty. Now this building is an expression of you. It is fun, exciting, boring, dreary, depending on the mood of its occupants. It is what you are. 7 Athletics played an important part in the activities of the Raton High School students. Track, tennis, baseball, golf, football, and basketball were the six competitive sports available for interested young men wishing to express their own particular abilities. Girls were able to demonstrate their talents in softball, volleyball, basketball, nd track through Ti-gerettes, a girls’ athletic association. The cheerleaders were there to feel and express the student body’s spirit or the disappointment of a team. Remember the expression on a pitcher’s face as it creased with concentration, the stretch of a tennis player with that look of determination, or that second of anguish after the blast of the starter’s gun. 8 Expressions The 1971 10 Raton Public Schools School Board 14 Joe V. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king w hose hand is to be laid upon him in honour. Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. We hope that it will bring you many fond memories in the years to come. You are the stars. Without you there could have been no RHS and no El Tigre. Enjoy your El Tigre: and in the future, look back and recall this time of magic in your lives and the friends that have come your way. 69 Student Council FIRST ROW': Mr. Mitchell. I). Gonzales, S.
