Text from Pages 1 - 154 of the 1956 volume:

Often we students are too busy or too interested in other activities to realize what friends we have in our teachers. We do not take the time to stop to appreciate them fully. Always cheerful, always ready to help us in our troubles is MISS LILA AZAR, beloved teacher in Raton High School. To her in a spirit of gratitude and friendship, we respectfully dedicate El Tigre, 1956. Certainly no one factor was responsible for our seven wins while only losing three. Some factors, however, that accounted for our success were: determination, spirit, good coaching and oneness as a team. We, the team, had determination! Each boy was out to win and as a team not individuals. Our spirit was also tops. No one ever went onto the field without pep. Whenever we had our cleats on the gridiron we had the spirit to go in there and fight. We went to rock'em and sock'em and come out on top. Our coaches did a superb job. Without their guidance, backing, and spirit we couldn't have had a successful season. There was co-operation among the boys and function as a team. Everyone had his assignments and everyone did what he was supposed to. We had each other's co-operation and our success was because of it. We were never too sure about a game; we never acted cocky but we had confidence in ourselves and in our coaches. Another great factor was the backing we had from the student body and townspeople. This was the most backing we have had in many years and we are grateful to the student body for this. The backing we had from them boosted us a long way. Even though we weren't state champs; wc are proud of our 1955-56 Football Season!! w 4 0% Compliments of FATSO'S DRIVE INN ANDY VALDEZ Halfback All-S fate EVERETT BISSEY Center JOHN THOMPSON Halfback All-State JAMES PAVLICH Tackle FRANK BARELA Halfback FRANK WELSHIEMER Tackle GARY REPOLA Fullback JOE PALOMINO Quarterback NICK PAPPAS LOUIS SCHUSTER FRANK DI BENEDETTI Tackle Halfback Guard ALLAN HUDDLESTON LARRY HODGE HURLEY BACON Guard Tackle End LEROY JOHNSON End BOBBIE CORDOVA Quarterback DICK GOTT Guard AllSuu BOB ORTIZ Guard ERVIN UL1BARRI End KENNY GOTT Tackle JOHN APADOCA Fullback MIKE VUCICH Center DAVID CALDARELLI End 33—TRINIDAD 30—LOS ALAMOS 14—HOLY TRINITY 6—LAS VEGAS 19—ST. Football players come in assorted weights, heights, jersey colors and numbers, but all football players have the same creed: to play every second of every minute of every period of every game to the best of their ability. Football players are found everywhere—underneath, on top of, running around, passing by, or driving through the enemy. Teammates rib them, officials penalize them, students cheer them, kid brothers idolize them, coaches criticize them, and mothers worry about them. A football player is Courage in cleats, Hope in a helmet. Pride in pads and the best of Young Manhood in moleskins. When your team is behind, a football player is incompetent, careless, and uncoordinated. Just when your team threatens to turn the tide of battle, he misses a block, fumbles the ball, drops a pass, or jumps offside. A football player is a composite—he eats like Notre Dame, sleeps like Notre Dame, but, more often than not, plays like Grand Canyon High. To an opponent publicity man, he has the speed of a gazelle, the strength of an ox. the size of an elephant, the cunningness of a fox. and the ability of Red Grange, Glen Davis, and Jim Thorpe—combined. To his own coach he has, for press purposes, the stability of mush, the fleetness of a snail, the mentality of a mule, is held together by adhesive tape, bailing wire, and has about as much chance of playing on Friday night as would his own grandfather. A football player likes game films, trips away from home, practice sessions without pads, hot showers, recovered fumbles, points after touchdowns and the quiet satisfaction which comes from being part of a perfectly executed play. He is not much for wind sprints, sitting on the bench, rainy days, after-game compliments, ankle wraps, or calisthenics. No one looks forward so much to September or so little to December. Nobody gets so much pleasure out of knocking down, hauling out or just plain bringing down the enemy. Nobody else can cram into one mind assignments for an end run, an off-tackle slant, a quarterback sneak, punt protection, kick-off returns, a buck lateral, or a spinner cycle designed to result in a touchdown every time it is tried. A football player is a wonderful creature—you can criticize him, but you can’t discourage him. You can defeat his team, but you can't make him quit. You can get him out of a game, but you can't get him out of football. Might as well admit it—be you alumnus, coach or fan—he is your personal representative on the field, your symbol of fair and hard play. He may not be an All-American, but he is an example of the American way. He is judged, by the democratic yardstick of how well he blocks, tackles and sacrifices individual glory for the overall success of his team. He is a hard working, untiring determined kid doing the very best he can for his school. And when you come out of a stadium, grousing and feeling upset that your team has lost, he can make you feel mighty ashamed with just two sincerely spoken words .. . WE TRIED! Dramatic (Vub rThe Dramatic Club is a club in Raton High School for those students interested in dramatics. Any Sophomore, Junior, or Senior wishing to join the club may do so at the beginning of each semester. The purpose of the Dramatic Club is to learn to act and to enjoy acting. It has been an outstanding organization in our school for many years. Meetings are held on every fourth Monday of each month. New officers are elected each semester. The president of the club must be a Senior. All other offices can be held by Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors. Under the direction of Miss Bennett, the club sponsor, each year the Dramatic Club presents a three act play. The play cast is composed of the club members, who believe the time they give to plays is a worthwhile investment in work and fun. Future Homemakers of America is a national organization whose membership consists of pupils who are presently enrolled or who have had one semester in home-making. For three years Raton's chapter has had the largest membership in New Mexico. Other recognitions of merit include the largest number of state degrees conferred by the state-association; a national officer; a state officer. Each year the chapter has been eligible in the rotated form of election. The highest merit of all has been receiving the Merit Award Plaque, presented by the state Association to the chapter for outstanding achievements. Raton now possesses this traveling plaque which has been awarded to the local group for three consecutive years. Raton's one hundred twenty-four members, realizing the role of the homemaker in the future of America, better prepare to face the future with warm courage and high hope. The FTA movement grew out of the Horace Mann Centennial in 1937 when it was established by the NEA Assembly. It is a nationwide movement to which any student may be proud to belong. FTA works in both high schools and colleges. In colleges and universities, the FTA groups are called chapters; in high schools, they are called clubs. The high school groups are prevocational and exploratory. In New Mexico, there are four college chapters and twenty-eight high school clubs. The FTA club seeks: 1. To encourage young people to cultivate in themselves the qualities of personality and character which are the foundations of successful teaching; 2. To acquaint young people with the inspiring story of schools, the part free schools have played in the development of our democratic way of life, the heroic pioneering associated with establishment and expansion; 3. To provide people with specific information about opportunities in the various fields of education. Co-Presidents ..... Secretary .......................... JANE NEISH Treasurer ............... You have succeeded and you are confident that nothing can stop you! But do you know what made your success possible? Probably one of your teammates passed the ball to you and another might have screened your opponent—and this assistance on their part was the immediate cause of your success. Now multiply the enthusiasm and energy you derive from this experience by 5 and think what a terrific force you have unleashed at your opponents. Five boys fired with energy, enthusiasm, and team harmony are unbeatable. Multiply one player by 400 students. Rejoicing in victory and weeping with them in adversity contribute to the good spirit that flows from students to team and back to the students. What a weapon to throw at your opponents! The students and players that are willing to go the extra mile in the interest of others have surely caught the spirit of this great game of basketball. We as players feel that our students pulling together will add that little extra spark that can set a despondent player's soul on fire. As the school spirit goes, so goes the team. The coach says, My boys play their hearts out for every man on the team! We, the team, say, We won because the student body and we were pulling together, and that is what counts! In a democratic school system, it is practically impossible to get along en tirely by one's own efforts. To a student, success to a great extent, depends upon a harmonious relationship with other students, teachers, administrators, and people in the community. The same is true with members of the faculty or school administration, if they are to be successful. Cooperation is really a key word in a democracy. There, perhaps, is a need for fuller understanding by more people of how much individuals, families, and groups depend on each other. Let us all work together and try to make this school a true and working democratic institution where students and faculty may live and work happily and successfully. MR C K. WILLIAMS Principal T enacious 1 ndependent G racious E arnest R cliable S trong Greetings, R. H. S. A salutation to an ideal Raton High School Tiger student would read about like the above.
