ft '7 2 2 Published by THE ANNUAL STAFF RATON HIGH SCHOOL RATON, Nl-W MI XICO Dedication The old expression, Go the extra mile,” is time-worn, but the time will never come when this theory is worn in practice. Most people today, as always, believe, Do what you are paid to do,” and let it go at that. Not JAMES HEMPHILL! Better known to the students as Uncle Jim,” he goes far beyond the call of his duties. Surely he has gone the extra mile.” Always cheerful, always ready to help with anything from a missing book to a keyless lock, he is our counselor and our friend. And ... it is in the spirit of this friendship and in gratitude for it that we, the students of Raton High School, respectfully dedicate this, our 1954 annual, to UNCLE JIM” HEMPHILL. Standing: Barbara Gossett, Miss Sara Miller, Sponsor; Pat Donovan, Dale Horner, Emma Archuleta. Sitting: Myra Mortimer, Gayle Arthur, Sue Owens, Bernard Salvo. Insert: Loren Partridge. Not shown: Edith Morris. Annual Staff The Annual Staff is sincerely thankful to Mr. Daniel Sheehan of the House of Photography for his selfless and tireless efforts in producing the fine photography contained in our annual. And to Mr. Don Partridge of the Raton Sign Co. for the original and effective cover design. Left to right: W. D. Moore, Sidney A. Nixon, Harry McBride, Ray Durrett, Lee N. Tapia, and W. H. Foster. CAST MEMBERS OF You Can’t Kiss Caroline Or did we kiss Caroline? This hilarious performance, which kept the audience in stitches from start to finish, was the 1953-54 production of the Dramatic Club. Several members of the cast gave outstanding performance while each member of the backstage crew did his part to make the production a success. The three act play which is the Dramatic Club s high light of the year is the group's only money raising activity. Throughout the life of the club the Mask and Wiggers have spent much of their proceeds jn making the high school stage a better place on which to work. 1953-54 OFFICERS Presidents, Pat Donovan, Johnny Pappas; Vice Presidents, Gayle Arthur, Chuck Galassini; Secretaries, Beth Gregory, Betty Irene Doherty; Treasurers. Joe Harris, Eleanor Thompson; Historians, Helen Garzina, Linda Pfeiffer; Sponsor, Miss Lura Bennett. The Mask and Wig Club was started way back in 1934 when a group of Raton High Students wanted more acting experience than was provided in class plays. The club is still made up of dramatically inclined students who are enthusiastic about both the fun and the work of producing and taking part in plays. Membership is open to interested sophomores, juniors and seniors. Officers are elected each semester with only seniors eligible for the presidency. The officers play an important part in the club for they completely supervise each meeting throughout their term. Meetings are held every fourth Monday night of the month.
