PREFACE Go, Seeker, go. The world awaits you. The world with its pleasant meadows, smooth and green and fragrant; its whispering brooks; its spreading elms with their cool, inviting shade, haven of sweet singing birds; its flower-strewn paths: and its breezes gentle. The world with its steep, rocky slopes, pine covered, leading past the soaring eagle's nest; its slopes that seem to reach interminably toward the heaven's blue ;its stumbling paths, rocky paths. Go, Seeker, go. But as you go, may you pray with the poet, God, give me hills to climb, And strength for climbing. The world awaits you. The world which holds America, America with its rolling prairies, its city-studded East, its mountainous West, its growing empire on the blue Pacific. America with its glorious heritage, its glowing future. America looks to you, Seeker, to make that future, glow. So, then every man his chance—to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden opportunity—to every man the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him—this, Seeker, is the promise of America.
