PREFACE Go, Seeker, go. The world awaits you. The world with its pleasant meadows, smooth and green and fragrant; its whispering brooks; its spreading elms with their cool, inviting shade, haven of sweet singing birds; its flower-strewn paths: and its breezes gentle. The world with its steep, rocky slopes, pine covered, leading past the soaring eagle's nest; its slopes that seem to reach interminably toward the heaven's blue ;its stumbling paths, rocky paths. Go, Seeker, go. But as you go, may you pray with the poet, God, give me hills to climb, And strength for climbing. The world awaits you. The world which holds America, America with its rolling prairies, its city-studded East, its mountainous West, its growing empire on the blue Pacific. America with its glorious heritage, its glowing future. America looks to you, Seeker, to make that future, glow. So, then every man his chance—to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden opportunity—to every man the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him—this, Seeker, is the promise of America. Mary Ann Gillespie DEDICATION For her kind consideration and untiring efforts in bettering our school, we, the class of '48, dedicate our yearbook as a permanent record of our sincere appreciation. From teaching English to teaching journalism— this briefly summarizes Miss Gillespie's twenty-six years of unselfish service to Raton High. Few know the extent and originality of Miss Gillespie’s contributions to our curriculum. Thus it is that we, the students of the annual staff, take this method of honoring Miss Gillespie and expressing our gratitude for the devotion, service, and cooperative spirit which she has given to our school through two and one half decades. As usually happens, that work has fallen heavily on a few people. The compensation for this additional work will be the extra training you receive and the satisfaction of having given of your time and ability over and above the call of duty. the spring of 1928. You might have let another year or many years pass without such a publication with no blame to yourselves. I personally appreciate your work and sincerely hope the Annual will be an annual from this year hence. V This high school last published such a book in E. E. The orchestra is an annual entertainer for the Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado. Being welcome guests at the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, and P.T.A. constitutes another portion of their activities. It always adds to the success of the plays. But the music festival provides the real test of the orchestra's ability, climaxing a year of education and pleasure, under the direction of Arch MacGowan. THE MASK 6c WIG CLUB The now productive Dramatic Club had its start in 1934. It was organized by a group of juniors and seniors who felt that their two annual class plays didn't give ample opportunity for stage work to students. Since then, the membership has expanded to sophomores as well as juniors and seniors. The three aims of Dramatic Club are act ing, learning about acting, and learning how to enjoy acting. Cooperating with the high school chorus, the Dramatic Club gives a yearly presentation of a Christmas or Easter vesper program which is always a star in the club's crown. Participation in assemblies and P. T. A. programs is anxiously awaited by all. Outsiders know the Dramatic Club by their annual full-length play. Three of their fourteen productions have been The Ghost Train, by Arnold Ridley, Holiday, by Philip Barry, and Not Herbert, by Howard Young. Each year an award is given to the student who has contributed most in class plays, operettas, assembly programs, and Dramatic Club activities. The money that is received from plays is used for worth-while contributions to the school. The funds have been used to help buy the footlights and stage equipment, plus the donation of $100 for gymnasium curtains so the movie projector can be used in the gymnasium. This year the Mask and Wig Club points with pride to a membership of seventy-one and the presentation of the four-act play, Not Herbert, which was enthusiastically received by both students and townspeople.
