WEA PON5 DEPA R TMEN T The Weapons Department onboard the USS RA THBURNE is comprised of numerous rates which support the weapons systems employed, as well as the men that perform the traditional seaman duties-small boat operations, cargo handling, rigging, etc. Specihcally, the Boatswains Mate C BM Q rating comprises the workforce which is skilled in all phases of seamanship and in the handling of deck force personnel. Members of this rating, one of the oldest in the navy, perform almost any task in connection with the operation of small boats, storing cargo and the handling of ropes and lines. In addition, they maintain rigging, ground tackle and can vas articles. The Sonar Technicians CSTQ operate, service, and maintain the ship 's sonar systems. The primary mission of which is the searching for and tracking of enemy submarines. The Fire Control Technicians I F Tj maintain and repair the ships Hre control computer systems for the acquisition tracking of airborne and surface targets in order to control the ship 's gun and missile system launchers. The Gunners Mate I GM, GMG, and GM Tj rating includes the duties of operating, repairing and maintaining the ship 's guided missile launching systems, guns, gunmount and associated handling equipment, magazines and ammunition. In conjunction with the above, they also maintain and inspect the magazine sprinkler systems. The Torpedomen I TM 'sj maintain and test torpedo ordinance. E 2
