WASHINGTON - A six-ship Navy task force sailed from Subic Bay in the Philippines January 6 and was ex- pected to enter the Indian Ocean. But its exact destination and mission shrouded in secrecy as Navy Times went to press. William Beecher, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, insisted that the sailing was not- related to the Communist seizure - at about the same time - of Phuocbinh, capital of the South Vietnamese province of Phuoclong, 80 miles northeast of Saigon. Midway due Agence France-Presse YOKOSUKA, Japan-The 51,000-ton aircraft carrier Midway, which sailed Oct. 10 at the height of a controversy over whether U.S. warships were bring- ing nuclear weapons into Japan, is due back at the U.S. naval base here tomorrow, Navy sources said. The ship will be three days ahead of schedule. The carrier with a crew of 3,800 and skippered by Capt. Fi. J. Schulte has been engaged in antiair- craft and antisubmarine maneuvers in the South Pacific with the escort ship Rathburn. The controversy was sparked by a re- cent congressional testimony by retired admiral Gene Robert Laroque, who said that U. Gogue, Benny G. San Nicolas and Joaquin T. Alicto. These Guamanian sport fishermen, adrift on the Philippine Sea for 14 days in a small motorboat, were rescued from their two week ordeal by the USS Rathburne QDE-10575. This Pearl Harbor home-ported Knox class ocean escort, commanded by Emergency Break-away, CAM DEN , 1o D Right five, ten, twenty Cmdr. Harold B. Russell of Aiea, is currently operating as a unit of the United States Seventh Fleet. The small craft and its three occupants were first located by a P-3 Orion which marked the position of the stranded vessel with flares and vectored Rathburne to the rescue scene. The rescue was completed by Rathburne's motor whaleboat crew. The rescue team, led by Lt. Robert D. Owen of Redlands, Calif., swiftly returned the stranded men to the Guam bound destroyer for a medical checkup, a hot meal and a shower. David K. Gogue, an employee of the United States Naval Station Guam's public works department, stated that the 14 foot boat had been intended for a one day fishing trip, but had run out of fuel. Prior to the rescue, the boat had drifted several hundred miles to the west of Guam and had been overlooked by five passing vessels.
