Exchange it 'R 1 Rosemary Cardoza Students Mayuko Awano Lina Pleyel This year Raritan had three exchange students: Mayuko Awano from Tokyo, Japan, Rosemary Cardoza from Puerto Rico, and Lina Pleyel from Stockholm, Sweden. All three enjoy living here but miss their friends at home. Mayuko Awano, a junior, is very involved in sports. She was a member of the field hockey team, softball team, and bowling team. Her favorite sport is softball. When asked what was the most different thing here she replied, I donft know which is the most different thing, but there are many differences between here and there. Some of these are language, lifestyle, school system, thinking, and so on. Lina Pleyel, a senior, has been speaking English since she was 9 years old, because it is mandatory in school. In Stockholm her mother writes novels and her father is a psycholo- gist. Lina feels that in the United States people spend money too easily and are greedy with it. However, she really likes the friends she has made. Rosemary Cardoza, also a senior, attended Raritan for almost two months, but returned to Puerto Rico because she missed her boyfriend, and she had to apply to the University of Puerto Rico. She feels that high school students here are wilder, which gives them fewer privileges while in Puerto Rico the kids are trusted more. Rosemary liked it here after she got accustomed to the differences. Exchange Students 69
