Through their guidance we have not only obtained a greater knowledge through each book, but they have also helped us to develop the right attitudes and habits. They have taught us what a good citizen is, and how to put this knowledge to work in our everyday living. We feel this is but a small way in which to express our appreciation for all they have done for us. 4 CONTENTS People Organizations Athletics Features Advertisements M ater In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia In the valley green with apple trees Our Rappahannock High School reigns In our Youth supreme Our memories long will linger And echo through the years For Rappahannock High School We’ll lift our voices clear. CLASS OF 1961 Our Class of 61 has traveled far since we first entered Rappahannock High School in ’56 as poor little eighth graders, who were neither men nor beasts. We have traveled a road filled with joy and ex- citement, one that only a student in high school could experience. Time seemed to pass so slowly, but finally we entered our Freshman year. We were at last high school students partici- pating in the different clubs and athletics. Time passed more quickly then, and be- fore we realized it we were sophomores, planning for a party that turned out to be the biggest social event of the year for us. What a success! Then in our Junior year we became organized as one class instead of two, as it was previously arranged, with Shirley Brown as President. This year was busily spent in making money for the Junior- Senior Prom. Just before Christmas much excitement was aroused as we received our school rings. We really felt the part of a Junior now. Then in the spring, we had a most memorable prom, carrying the theme “Blue Moon”. On graduation night as we accepted the candles of the out-going Seniors, we realized for the first time we had reached our goal that we had longed for for so long. We were now sophisticated seniors, with Roger Anderson as our leader for the year. We were thrilled with excitement as we were to be the first class to gradu- ate from the new Rappahannock High School. Being in a new school, we thought this would be just the time to start an annual, and we set to work getting advertisements for “The Rappsody”. Now as graduation approaches, the school is wrapped up with the excitement of calling cards, signing of memory books, measure- ments for caps and gowns, and the ordering of commencement announcements. In the midst of the bustling activities there are some who are making plans for the future. While some are planning on marriage, going into the service, or just getting a job, others are applying for ad- mission to college. In the fall of 1957, we arrived at the old high school in Washington. There were enough of us to fill two eighth grade homerooms. Until this year we remained in separate homerooms. As sophomores, one section had a picnic on Skyline Drive and the other had a swimming party at Woodland Park. Mrs. Moffett’s room had a dance at Easter to start raising money for the Prom we would someday give. As Juniors, we are consolidated in one homeroom. We have lost some members during the years. From the original seventy-odd, we have decreased to forty-seven. The year of the Prom has arrived. To finance the social event of our high school career, we have sold candy and sponsored sock hops. 27 Alice Anderson Robert Armentrout Johnny Atkins Mary Ellen Atkins Dickie Brady Bonnie Brown Joe Brown Eugene Burke Richard Burke Larry Clark Dorothy Cook Clarence Dodson Dorothy Dodson Lillian Dodson Ruth Frazier Steve Hawkins Arthur Hitt Charles Jenkins Wayne Jenkins Johnny Keys Tommy Kidwell Judy Latham Nancy Latham Ann Leake 28 Earl Lillard Sue Many Joyce Mclnturff Dorothy Moore Barney Pauze Herbert Peverill Shirley Peyton Randolph Poe Roger Poe Ginger Russell J. A goal which, in the third year since entering RHS in 1958 as eight-graders, seems closer than we could possibly imagine during those first months. In the fall of 1959, we reached the first plateau; we were freshmen in high school. Being “real” high school students was certainly great, but there was one thing lacking; we were in two homerooms, separate and apart. We are now the Sophomore Class, organized to work together. So far, we have been somewhat restricted in our activities, but we hope in the coming years to accomplish big things. We are happy to have in our sophomore class members of the Varsity basketball teams, the Junior Varsity basket- ball team, the baseball team, the Rappsody staff, the FFA, the FHA, and the 4-H Club. Now, with two more years of high school before us, we look forward to many activities and face the coming years in the hope that we will measure up to the standards of Rappahannock High School. 30 Doug Atkins Levi Atkins Mary Sue Atkins Ginger Bailey Lee Beaty Kay Berry Danny Blevins Abraham Burke Carolyn Campbell Arthur Cheatham John Clark Betty Lou Clatterbuck Maryland Clatterbuck Gary Deal Betty Jane Dodson Betty Corine Dodson Doris Ann Dodson Ruby Dodson Annie Frazier William Frazier Tommy Fincham Roger Foster James Grimsley Mildred Grimsley Mark Harris Joan Hickerson Frank Jarvis Bill Jenkins 31 Dorothy Jenkins Jack Jenkins James Jenkins Luther Keys Betty Kay Kilby Tish Kilby Sally Latham Judy Lillard Betty Miller Louie Miller Ennis Norman Mary Norman Judi North Dorothy Ann Payne Dorothy Payne Harrison Powers Louise Racer Floyd Seal Marley Scott Jessie Sisk Barbara Smith Charlie Smith Elizabeth Smoot Peggy Smoot Milton Switzer Francis Updike Lyle Updike Earl Williams Jerry Williams Alice Wood 32 MR. CLASS OF 1964 The class of ’64 came into existence in September of 1959. Our class was given the honor of being the first class to have to have twenty credits to graduate. This means we were really high school students instead of just eighth- graders. We, the class of ’64, are the first freshmen of our new high school. This we consider an honor, an honor made possible by the people of Rappahannock who worked hard and gave their time to build the new high school. As freshmen we have entered into many school activities; we have six who are members of either the girls’ or J.V. teams. We have one cheerleader, and six who are in the French Club. As this school year comes to an end we all are rushing around getting ready for exams. Next year all of us will come back Sophomores ready to start all over again. 33 James Lee Alther John Anderson Roy Atkins Richard Bayne Michael Brown Charles Burke John Butler Doris Bywaters Nelson Clatterbuck Peggy Cook Dorothy Davis Merle Dulaney Katharine Dwyer William Frazier Johnny Green Mary Grigsby Loretta Grimsley Charles Hitt Linda Hitt Alice Jenkins Ann Jenkins Kaye Johnston Segar Jones Charles Kennedy Phyllis Keyser Maybelle Lamb Jeanette McLean Frank Moffett Charlotte Moore Janice Myrick Kathryn Nalls Sandra Orange Lucille Pullen Shirley Pullen Earl Putnam Joseph Ralls Lillian Reeve Linda Rowzie Susan Schaefer Ray Scott Billy Sisk Anna Sites Dana Snead Roger Welch Betty Williams Evelyn Williams Jimmy Williams William Woodard NOT PICTURED: Thomas Dodson, James Lilly, Albert Goodall, Russell Jenkins MRS. CLASS OF 1965 In September of 1960, our class started school with 91 students. We were proud to have the opportunity to be the first class to spend all five of our high school years in the new Rappahannock High School. Those first few weeks were hectic and full of confusion, but with the help of the upperclassmen and our teachers, we finally began to catch on to the schedule little by little. When basketball season started in December, two members of our class were chosen for the J.V. basketball squad. Now we really began to feel the high school spirit! Today our goal seems very far in the future, but in four years we will be the seniors of RHS. Then it will be our responsibility to give others help as we have received it this year. 35 Patrick Alther William Alther Bobby Atkins Jack Atkins Jean Atkins Lindy Atkins Shirley Atkins Tommy Atkins Thomas Baldwin Linda Beahm Virginia Bradford Freddie Burke Joan Bywaters Kenneth Bywaters William Campbell Charlotte Clark Madeline Clark Ruth Ann Clark Alice Clatterbuck Virginia Clatterbuck Wayne Clatterbuck Robert Deal Buddy Dodson Francis Dodson Janice Dodson Joan Dodson Joyce Dodson Shirley Dodson Gloria Durden Ernest Eubank Arlene Fincham Elizabeth Fincham Robert Fincham Ed Flock Marie Foster Jo Ann Fox Charles Frazier Mae Frazier James Fry Eddie Gore Lee Greenaway Lillian Grigsby 36 Patsy Grimsley Roger Hawkins Ronnie Hawkins Dennis Hitt Dale Hunter Bessie Jenkins Bonnie Jenkins Mary Jenkins Maureen Jenkins Nancy Jenkins Paula Keys Timothy Kilby Shelby Jean Lillard Tommy Lillard Judy Mills John O'Bannon David Palmer Linda Payne Dennis Powers Carl Putnam James Ralls Dorothy Reeve Becky Rutherford Douglas Silvey David Smoot Kenyon Smith Lois Smoot Mary Smoot William Smoot Ronnie Thornhill Leslie Titchenell Harold Walker William Weaver Andrew Weakley Joan Wharton Mildred Wharton Frances Williams Jessie Williams Mattie Williams Jean Wines John Woodward Patsy Woodward NOT PICTURED: Gloria Jenkins 37 Mr. Alvin L. Future Farmers of America The Future Farmers of America, or FFA as it is commonly known, is the national organization of, by, and for boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools. The FFA is an intra-curricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum--vocational agriculture. Among other things, members learn through active participation how to conduct and take part in public meetings; to speak in public; to buy and sell co- operatively; to solve their own problems; to finance themselves, and to assume civic responsibility. Future Flomemakers of America The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization composed of high school students who are taking or have taken home economics. It is composed of chartered state associations which are made up of local chapters. F. H. A. provides opportunities for developing individual and group initiative in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. The club motto “Toward New Horizons” reminds members that their contributions to home life today will influence the kinds of homes they have tomorrow. One of our main purposes is to further interest in homemaking. Some chapter activities this year were: corresponding with pen pals in foreign countries, entertaining the Daughters of the Star Federation, contributing to CARE en- couraging polio shots and Civil Defense Preparedness. THE SOUND OF MUSIC The thirty-two members of the Rappahan- nock Music Class, under the skillful direc- tion and instruction of Mrs. Warren Wilbur, have accomplished much during the past year. They have learned to appreciate the meanings of good music and through various assemblies and programs have given us samples of it. They have lured us to the auditorium with the dreamy notes of “White Christmas” and the catchy sounds of “I Wonder Why.” They sang in the Thanks- giving and Christmas Programs as well as at assemblies. They also supplied the Thanksgiving music at one of our local churches. Virginia Yates Bradford Accompanist 42 Mrs. Wilbur directs the boys in Home On the Range. VARS TV CLUB The Varsity Club is composed of those few students who have earned a varsity letter in sports. At basketball games hot dogs, soft drinks, and candy bars have become the sign of the Varsity Club. The money raised through this activity defrays the cost of the blue and gold school jackets which are the pride of deserving seniors. After a victorious game, spirits are high on the home-bound bus. CHAMPS OF 1961 The Panthers proved this year that it wasn’t impossible for Rappahannock to win the District 9 Tournament. After posting a record of 6-9 for the regular season with six losses to Group IB schools, the boys entered the tournament as the number one team and remained there as they defeated Warrenton and Marshall to qualify for the Regional Tournament. At Charlottsville, the Panthers encountered the tall giants of Midlothian and bowed to them with a score of 66-34. It must be re- membered that this is the first time in several years that RHS has had a Junior Varsity team. With this year’s experience and a better physical education program at our new school, a better team is ex- pected next year. Roger Welch was high scorer this year with 33 points. 54 LEFT TO RIGHT, STANDING: Sally Latham, Sue Many, Kay Johnston. KNEELING: Bonnie Pingley, Captain; Myrla Anne Updike, Charlene Romine. THE SNAPPY SIX Fifteen rahs for the pretty pepsters who cheered their teams to many victories! The squad first consisted of six girls, but Charlene Romine married, and the six became five. Under the leadership of their captain, Myrla Anne Updike, they supported their teams at nineteen games. At the beginning of the year, the girls ordered new uniforms--gold skirts and white sweaters blazoned with huge R’s-for Rappahannock. However, at the last game of Tournament Bound BEAT WARREN TON ! the year, a regional tournament in Charlottesville, they returned to the use of the familiar blue and gold skirts and wore corsages of a white carnation on a back- ground of blue and gold ribbon. They have shouted and sung, jumped and danced at each game to guide the cheering crowd through the school yells. Although they were not playing on the court, they seemed to fight as hard for each goal as the members of the team. Who Ya Gonna Yell For?
