WHICH IS THE WAY TO BOSTON? March of 1987 the four-member One Act Play cast won a trophy at the District competition at Middlesex High School. Tabatha Bowen was a third-year veteran of this Drama activity. Jerome Nelson, Hunter Omohundro and Elizabeth Rice proved their talents by filling out this year’s cast. Their performance of the play, Which Is the Way to Boston?, gained the ensemble high praise from all three judges in both the District and Regional level of competition. Tabatha and Jerome portrayed an elderly farm cou¬ ple living an isolated existence that makes them highly susceptible to superstition. Elizabeth Rice and Hunter Omohundro were both praised for their convincing roles as the sister and brother who are concerned for their strangely superstitious Aunt Martha and Uncle John. Mr. Kurczak directed this popular performance. Jerome Nelson as Uncle John explains ... “Weil, it’s hard to forget all this folklore you soak up around here.” Mary, played by Elizabeth Rice, comes to the conclusion . 1 ... “It wouldn’t be so good to be lost tonight.” Aunt Martha, played by Tabatha Bowen, stays stone silent as her husband asks her, “Don’t you hear Martha? Martha, what’s wrong?” byf 1 Forensics One Act Play 51 Vanessa and Demetrice lead the Mighty Mar¬ ching Raiders in Warsaw Parade. Flag Girls — Tammy Cliborne, Audrey Jackson, Valerie France. STATE CHAMP9 Debate is an interscholastic competitive activity that combines logic, quick¬ thinking, organization, and reasoning with public speaking to produce an altogether unique and highly educational experience. Debate demands six or more hours a week in formal practice rounds, several addi¬ tional hours for independent research and evidence cutting (which often includes preparing over 2,000 cards), and the sacrifice of one’s Saturdays to wake up at 3 a.m., leave Rappahannock at 5:30 a.m., and arrive home after 11:00 p.m. after four strenuous debate rounds, usually in the Hampton Roads area. While debate does demand extensive work, lots of personal motivation, and a love for the activity, it most definitely pays off in the long run. With the poise, confidence, and good public speaking habits it nurtures, and with the wide range of knowledge most full-fledged debaters have about the society in which they live, debate prepares students for the more rigorous academic stresses of college, often aids in college acceptance, and prepares one for a future which requires success. Rappahannock’s debate team competed in over ten tournaments this year. Ac¬ complishments included placing in the top five squads in four out of six Tidewater Debate League Tournaments, placing the top Novice team in two TDL’s, placing the 1st Varsity team at Longwood, and 2nd place squad at Longwood. The team crowned its year by placing all four of its State entries (the maximum allowed), in¬ cluding one state championship. All debate participants at Rappahan¬ nock deserve high praise and hearty com¬ mendation. However, without the leader¬ ship and dedication of Mrs. Jane Kurczak, their success may not have been possible. Congratulations to all.
