It all started when the junior class officers chose five or six songs “Just Once” would be the theme and the colors light pink, blue and silver would be the colors of the decorations. Beautiful blue invitations with center-opening fold were given out individually to each administrator, faculty member, and senior student on April 2, 1982. The decorations were considered and selected by the Decorations Committee, with Allen Webb as chairman. The central decorations for the prom was a gazebo, built by Mr. Yackel’s shop boys, and a fountain of misty water which accented the center of the gymnasium. The tables were accented with white doves and blue angel hair on cloths of pink. A menu of cake, punch, and party sandwiches was attrac¬ tively arranged on flower adorned tables. By the twenty- second of April the hard work of the juniors paid off, and the preparations were completed. Music for the prom was provided by the group Topz, who played many well- known tunes of the day. Mr. Forrest Patton, a locally known photographer was in charge of taking pictures of the elegantly dressed guests at the prom. Our romantic evening was very exciting and will always be remembered by those of us who attended. By Susan Lewis 52 JUST ONCE by Wanda Gordon Just once, I’d like to sail away Upon a cloud of misty gray And once, to walk on silver sand And gently sift some through my hand. Just once, I’d like to touch the sky Just as a storm cloud breezes by, And when the sun begins to set, I’d like to be a part of it. Just once, I’d like to feel the glow As stars reach out to me below, And once, just once, to be adrift, As t’ward the night my hands I lift. And once, I’d like to hear you say You love me in a special way, And I’d like to tell you that it’s you With whom I’ll make these dreams come true. 53 ISLAND FOR SENIORS 55 On May 12, a crowded, screaming school bus started for Reedville. With Mr. Thomas as the driver, Mr. O’Dell as the captain and Mrs. Kurczak as a steady guide, the 1982 senior class of RHS took their trip to Tangier Island. At 11 o’clock they boarded the Captain Thomas for an enjoyable hour of chatting and sun bathing as they cruised toward the island. At 12 noon the seniors arrived at Tangier wanting to eat and take a look around. They walked up and down the streets looking at houses and churches. At about 2 o’clock some visited the gift shop and headed back to the boat. Of course, some had to get wet and take a swim and I bet that felt good. It was a rather warm day. The cruise ended at 3:30 p.m. and the seniors moved on to Tripp-A- Lee Restaurant where they pigged out! After dinner, the seniors dragg¬ ed their stuffed bodies on to the bus and returned their minds toward home and school. The seniors enjoyed themselves and would like to thank Mr. Thomas, Mr. O’Dell and Mrs. Kurczak for putting up with them that whole day. In February, the team defeated Lancaster, making them district champs. In March, the team played Arcadia at Lan¬ caster and defeated them. This left the team to play Lancaster our strongest enemy. The team left the locker room with high spirits and beat Lancaster. As a result, Rappahannock went on to state competition for the first time. With this great achievement, everyone got involved the teachers, the parents, and the fans. Everyone was so excited! Interested fans and supporters, which seemed like all of War¬ saw, boarded eight chartered buses and went to the 9:00 game Thursday night. The game with Appalachia High School was a big victory. For the second game, about half of the fans turned up to root the team to victory with Drewry Mason High School. Even though the team felt the agony of defeat in the second game, our team is still No. 1 to us. By Terri Moseley 97 MARDI GRAS On Friday, March 26, at 8:00 p.m., the students were returning to school dressed in unusual outfits. This was the first dance held jointly by the Foreign Language Club and the SCA. Prizes were given to those with the best costumes. Those prizes included: Most Serious — Allen Webb and Lynn Langford; Funniest — Todd Brown and Carolyn Elliott; Best Disguise — Todd Brown; Most Original Boy — Dennis Jenkins; and Most Original Girl — Wanda Gordon. All those who attended enjoyed listening to the music of the DJ, Roger Jones. It was a most enjoyable evening.
