As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to oth¬ ers, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare your¬ self with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the uni¬ verse, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. 25 Senior Expressions Are Varied Lois Ruth Balderson “Lois” Deborah Jean Ball “Deborah” Doretha Caroline Ball “Doretha” Frances Jane Bell “Jane” Sara Elizabeth Bronner “Sally” Debora Karen Bryant “Debbie” Patricia Loretta Carter “Patricia” Lois Madeline Dandridge “Lois” 28 Leading And Following Ora Mae Darby “Ora Mae” Mary Ellen Davis “Mary Ellen” Nancy Lynn Davis “Nancy” Denise Jean Dungan “Denise” Patricia Dale Dyson “Patty” Katherine Claire Edwards “Kathy” Elizabeth Warren Elliott “Betty Warren” Ellen Hart Fidler “Ellen Hart” SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Doris Ann Rock, Secretary; Jane Bell, Treasurer; Sally Bronner, Vice- President; Evelyn Taylor, Reporter; Ora Darby, President. 29 Frances Olivia Fidler “Frances” Lola Madeline Franklin “Madeline” Debbie Ann Gallagher “Debbie” Deborah Ann Grimes “Debbie” Linda Louise Hence “Linda” Marsha Ann Hinson “Marsha” Cassandra Denise Jackson “Cassandra” Linda Bernette LeVere “Linda” Working And Playing 30 Remembering Past Years Cheryl Ann Lewis “Cheryl” Janice Fay Lewis “Janice” Virginia Lee Loudenslager “Lee” Betty Sue Mahan “Betty Sue” Betty Ann Marks “Betty” Myra Ann Mozingo “Myra” Margaret Helen Mullin “Margaret” Donna Sue Nash “Donna” 31 Restless And Searching Debra Gene Oliff “Debra” Norma Lee Pierson “Norma” Deborah Faye Rock “Deborah” Doris Ann Rock “Doris Ann” Nancy Rae Schools “Nancy” Patricia Ann Scott “Pat” 1 1 I n Jr Scarlot O’Neil Scott “Scarlot” Catherine Ann Smith “Cathy” 32 Winning And Losing Cleopatra Havella Smith “Cleo” Diana Marie Smith “Diane” Jyl Lea Stover “Jyl” Katherine Gail Sydnor “Kathy” Helen Elizabeth Tate “Helen” Barbara Ann Taylor “Barbara” Evelyn Louise Taylor “Evelyn” Audrey Jean Veney “Audrey” 33 Creative, Busy, Proud Eva Corine Veney “Eva” Sandra Verdene Veney “Sandra” Cassandra La-Sene Wormley “Cassandra” Clarissa Elizabeth Yerby “Clarissa” Alvin Bernard Ball “Alvin” Chester Lee Ball “Chester” Virgil Barber “Virgil” Walter Barber “Walter” m r A £ - 1 34 Laughing, Carefree, Spirited Charles Edward Belfield “Charles” Ernest William Beuchelt “Ernest” Benjamin Alfonso Brown “Ben” Lloyd Tyrone Carey “Lloyd” Wardell Carey “Wardell” Lewis Fogg Carter “Lewis” Augustus Edward Coates “Edward” Ronnie Jett Crabbe “Ronnie” 35 Stepping Toward Greatness Henry Lee Gallagher “Henry Lee” Allen Booker Harper “Allen” Samuel Bell Harris “Sammie” Lindy Marcel Hinson “Lindy” Clifton Lyell Jenkins “Clifton” Mark Wayne Jenkins “Wayne” John Wesley King “John” Louis Wayne King “Wayne” Our Dreams Become A Reality Elliott Dabney Minor “Chip” Charles Franklin Newton “Charles” Ira James Packett “Ira” Wayne Ralph Packett “Wayne” Willian Larry Powell “Larry” William McClintock Ryland “William” David Barry Sanders “Barry” Dennis Edward Tuck “Dennis” Rockwell Veney “Rockwell” Ted O’Neil Veney “Ted” Willie James Veney “Willie” 37 Junior class officers Gary Sanders, Diane Morris, Billy Hudson, Wanda Clarke, and Callie Brown look over photographs. This volume evinces the fact that the Rappahan¬ nock staff eventually got busy and found that being knee deep in photographs, with their fingers into the glue, copy sheets, typewriter ribbons, and fund rais¬ ing campaigns, could actually be rather enjoyable. We now look back and realize that the bickering, the panic sessions, the mounds of photos and paper, and the gray hairs added to Mrs. Sampson’s head repre¬ sent to us the high point of this school year. Indeed, we sincerely hope that you, the reader, will enjoy re¬ living a few moments of this year with the compli¬ ments of the 1972 Rappahannock staff. Mrs. Peggy W. She is the Junior Class Sponsor and she teaches United States History and American Government. Everyone respects this teacher and looks to her for advice and help. She is never too busy to stop and talk with a student or to help the school in any way. In appreciation for such devoted service, the annual staff proudly dedicates the 1972 RAPPAHANNOCK to MRS.
