Push class is a new phrase around RCHS, and has become well known since the beginning of the year when the first of these was started. The most talked about class is the senior group of sixteen students, which goes through four subjects in one year, solid geometry, trigonometry, analytical geometry, and calculus. At the end of the course tests may be taken to see if the mathematicians qualify for credits in these subjects in college. Thus they may go right on ta more advanced courses without repeating. Other such classes are being conducted from seventh through the twelfth grade in English as well as Math. Teachers have found them very successful in working with the above average students. Local School System Uses Additions in an Attempt to Subtract from Multiplying Problems l'll freeze! was a typical exclamation from any student who received his schedule card only to find that he would have a class this year in one of the A rooms, and would be walking back and forth between buildings all winter. The annexes were moved onto the school ground in back of the main building last summer, since extra classrooms were essential with the overload of students. Needed space was provided in un- usual places, such as the Washington gym and in various offices, and was not received with much enthusiasm. Next year part of the load will be reduced with the new Junior High Schools, being completed this year. ln the meantime many students have had to put up with a little inconvenience until better facilities are provided. A look at some of the statistics of growth for the DOST ten years shows the problems that have been faced by the local board and administrators. ln I949-50 there were 3,985 students enrolled in all grades in Rapid City. This jumped to 8,764 for the current i958-59 session, an increase of well over lOO'7B. The prediction for the coming year is an astounding 9,500. Ten years ago l59 teachers and administrators were on the payroll, now there are 365, with about 25 to be added this coming year, The following buildings have been constructed since I949 to keep abreast of the increase in enrollment: Canyon Lake l'49l, General Beadle l'5OJ, Annie Tallent l'5OJ, Lincoln l'5lJ, E. B. Bergquist l'52l, Horace Mann l'52l, South Canyon l'S2l, Robbinsdale l'53l, Meadowbrook l'57l, and Pinedale i'58J. These are elementary buildings. Another one is under construction in the south part of Rapid City. A Vocational Building was added to the main high school plant downtown. The first junior high building was West Junior High, opened in l955, with two more new ones to be opened this fall, '59, These are in North and South Rapid, At present a site is being sought for a new senior high building which will be needed in the near future, Several new positions have been added in view of the increase of the size of the system. Jobs created have been those of the Assist- ant Superintendent, Mr. C. E. Haskins, Supervisor of Special Education, Mr. William Reid, Administrative Assistant to the Principal, Mr. Don Varcoe, and Director of Publicity, Mr. Robert Benton. Education is big business in Rapid City, and will get bigger for several years to come. l7
