A nw + Colgan Zfnalehafeol .9n 6onLrence fag Coach Gerry'El1yson's tall Cobblers won the Blaclc Hills Conference with an undefeated record in conference play. The season opened on the Cobblefs floor where they handed Lemmon a 30 to 60 defeat. Then the Pierre Governors .traveled to Rapid City and were trounced in a two game series by 27 and 36 points, respectively. For the first conference tilt, the Big Red traveled to Belle Fourche, where the Cobblers won 63 to 51. Then on February 5, on Rapid City's floor, they beat Belle by 23 points. Moving toward the top, the Cobblers next toolc on Hot Springs at home and defeated them 46-37. Again the Cohhlers beat the Bison on February 23 by 13 points. Traveling east the Rapid Citians were given their only defeat by the Broolcings Bobcats which were rated the top team in the state. ln the second game with Brookings, the Cobblers ignored the Bobcat reputation and defeated- them in a real thriller 49 to 48. Riding on top of the Conference, the Cobblers next met the Custer Wildcats. In a close game all the way, the Cohblers were victorious by 3 points. Un the home court the Cobblers ran wild and gave the Wildcats a 30 point defeat. Traveling again, the Cobblers defeated the defending champs, Sturgis Scoopers, twice in lop-sided scores, and then went on to do the same thing to Lead. One of the season's closer games was with a tall and tough Lead team. but the Cobblers were victorious by 3. Rolling again the Rapid Citians tool: 2 from Spearfish by wide margins. Then came the game of the year. The Cob- blers shared the conference top with Deadwood. who 'was also undefeated. On the night of January 29 the Cobblers played their best game of the season and defeated the favored Bears by I8 points. The Rapid Citians repeated and beat Deadwood again on February 26 by 3. These two wins for the Cobblers gave them an undis- puted first place in the Conference standings. Coach Gerry Ellyson will lose four seniors through graduation, Clayt Kiewel, Dennis Stolz, Neil Doeden, and .lim Naeve.
