Administration and Instruction II. Classes III. Organizations and Activities IV. Athletics V. Features and into These students, as you can readily see, are the busiest, most studious people you have ever had the pleasure to observe. Miss Adams has the situation well in hand. Well, don't be fooled by appearance. Even though everyone is as quiet as a mouse, their minds can be wandering, can't they? My, the way those typists' fingers Hy you'd think they'd make some mistakes. Oh, but they do. Mistakes are a penny a hundred these days. But, what can you expect? They'l1 be famous someday, and then you'll regret your jeers. He who laughs last, laughs best, they say. Look out! That tube is going to blow up, and where would we be-you needn't answer that. I never have inquired of Mr. Prunty what the mor- tality rate of his chemistry classes is because l'cl hate to embarass the poor man. But the way you hear rumors of blow ups, and people all bandaged up, it must be a very dangerous sub- ject. Oh, but students will brave anything for a little of that thing called knowledge. Mr. Moser's sociology classes are very inter- esting, with people popping up any minute and taking cunning candid camera shots of him. It must be very unnerving to him las you can well see in the following pages of this annuall. Well, anything to make life interesting. He tells us of the thrilling life of the criminal, so we imme- diately decide to have that profession as our life's ambition. Our Classes Don't groan when I mention Algebra. Really, it isn't so bad. Miss Krieger can fill you 11p with equations faster than any other teacher on earth. Pretty soon you can spout them off like a regu- lar trouper. Equations are the things that can make life really interesting, so wake up and live with Algebra. Some day some lucky business man is going to have the privilege of having one of these love- ly shorthand students in his office-the lucky man! Can't you just see him, blessing the name of R.C.H.S. and incidentally. Miss Rohde, the teacher? Oh! for the life of a businessman. Did you know we had some up and coming artists in R.C.H.S.? Miss Adamson has a great many spoils in her room. Go see them if you want proof of our greatness. If you have that creative desire and you cover your books with clever pictures of pretty girls, etc., maybe the fires of genius are burning in you and you have the makings of an artist. Perhaps you, too, should take art and become a credit to your school. You might even get as good as our Art Editor, .lean Mount, some day. These Home Ec girls know their stuff, I'1l tell the world! The pies they can make, and the cakes, and the cookies! Oh, you lucky men-I mean the ones who'll have these girls- as their wives. They, at least, will have food 'gas good as mother made. They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. So, go to it, girls. Johnson, Clerk of the Board of Education of Rapid City Independent School District. Qur Superintendent Superintendent Bergquist has meant much to students graduating from high school. His un- tiring eH'orts have always been directed for the best interests of the school and the stu- dents. These efforts not only have served to promote the school, but have placed his name among the outstanding educators of the north- west. He has generated respect from every- one of us and his interest in our activities and scholastics have caused our increased respect and liking for him as an individual as well as an educator. X ' l f .J Cnr Assistant Principal and Dean of Girls ' In Miss Welsh's first year in Rapid City High School as Assistant Principal and Dean of Girls her chief interests have been in the welfare of the students both as individuals and as members of the student body. VV ith this thought uppermost in her mind she has helped new students as well as others in meeting their problems. During the year in personal conference and group meetings Miss Welsh has kept in touch with student life and activities in order that she may more fully understand them, and has represented them before the Administration, the Faculty, and other organizations which bear on the high school. Our Principal As principal, Mr. Haskins, has been tho1'ough- ly competent and skillful in the administra- tion. He has been friend, counselor, arbiter, and companion-guide to everyone of us. Con tacts with him were made with increasing re- spect, and close associations have brought fine friendships. He stands firm in his convictions, a model and a leader we all admire. Witli ' three years of guidance under his skilled hand and with him as an ideal any student emerg- ing fl'0ll1 Rapid City High School should feel that his high school background has been coin- plete. Our School Nurse During our high school days the person who has safeguarded our health diligently with understand- ing and sympathy is our school nurse, Miss Black. Feeling the responsibility and necessity of skill- fully guiding our health welfare she has become an inseparable part of our school. The students have grown to know her ability and re- spect her advice and council. Her talks and instructions to the students concerning problems of health and sanitation have been very valuable, preventing many serious illnesses. To Miss Black this graduating class wishes to extend thanks for the help and interest she has given us. f . I I .i in MARY Z1-1HIE'l' Pringle, S. D. Black Hills Teachers College, B. As these men are the ones behind every activity of the school. as they have the ifinal voice in the hiring and tiring of teachers, and as they elect the Principal and the Superin- tendent, we decided to introduce them to you. They are: E. H. Swander, Dr. H. D. Newby, Superintendent E. B. Bergquist. Harley N. .lohn- son. Web Hill, Otto Barnett. and Earl Lewis. In order to make our school more of a democ- racy, the Student Council was organized. This Council is made up of one representative front each group in school. When it meets, it discus- ses ways and means of improving our school. 'Tis a hard job. but they do it gladly-at least they get out of class now and then. The officers are: Gerald Glaze, Presidentg Dan Leedy, Vice Presidentg Frances Larson, Secretary, Charlotte Harrison. Treasurer. Every student in R.C.H.S. belongs to the Stu- dent Association. Occasional meetings are held in the assembly for the purpose of approving recommendations for letters. Along with its oth- er duties, the officers decide the amounts of mon- ey with which they will subsidize certain school activities. There is one great advantage to be- ing a Student Association officereyou get a i'swell meal once a month. The officers are: Warren Williams. Presidentg Bill Lewis. Vice Presidentg Frances Larson, Secretaryg Betty .lean Besancon. Treasurer: Donald L'Esperance, Student Manager. WITHOUT THESE aetmstl The Superintendenfs office orce, iss uella Van Dusen. secretary to the Superintendent, and Marietta McLearie, supply and mimeograph clerk, are not as well known to the student body as a whole as the Principal's office force but they are very important in helping the Superin- tendent with his work. The school would not be the same without the smiling faces of Mrs. Crawford and Lois Rich- ardson to greet us when we are late. Mrs. Craw- ford can always feel perfectly safe to write out tardy slips, even though it will order a student to stay after school a half hour. You see, she is amply protected hy that nice, wide counter between her and the enraged student. The poor student has to Htake it on the chin and steal meekly away. Our building force has an unceasing job on its hands trying to keep the building present- able. R.C.H.S. students have been very fine in cooperating with them to keep our building at- tractive. Back Row: Chester Carsner, John Kjalstrom, Archie Tisdale, Mark Gifford, .less Herrick. Front Row: Ruben Jensen, George Wilson, Ditlev Lund, Victor Johnson. ' al. gs- 4.' Poster C lub INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SOCIETY This is a local organization in the larger international group. The objectives of the world-wide group are to encourage friendliness among peoples of all nations and to give students real and per- sonal contacts with far away students by means of correspondence. The local club has sponsored such correspondence, and many members have pen friends in Latin America, Europe, South Africa. Australia, and New Zealand. Our society invited other clubs to join with them in a costume party to enjoy Christmas in many lands as one project. Miss Moses is the Advisor. POSTER CLUB The chief purpose of the Poster Club is to give students an opportunity for practical experi- ence in the application of art principles to advertising. Training in lettering and poster design is involved in the making of posters which are used to announce current school and civic events throughout the year. Besides making posters for the high school opera and the plays produced by the Dramatic Club, the poster group this year has provided advertising for activities of the Girl Scouts, Disabled American Veterans. W. C. T. U.. and the American Legion Auxiliary. Membership in the club is not limited to students in the art department. Miss Adamson is the advisor. MATH CLUB This year the Math Club decided upon a new system for boosting membership. It is called the point system. Under this plan each member was responsible for a program of their own choosing. This plan worked very successfully and many interesting and worthwhile meetings were conducted. The club has been active in school affairs. At Christmas time a tree was decorated and placed in the lower hall of the new building. The decorations were made of mathematical design and were made by members of the club. In January the club held a sale of magic slates. The animal Alge- bra contest was conducted by the club and prizes were given. Officers l'resident. RIFLE CLUBS Learning how to handle firearms safely and improvement in marksmanship has been the ob- jective of the combined rifle clubs program for this year. A new sport in Rapid City High School, it has attracted a number of students who make it a regular part of their school life. Competition through the bi-weekly matches conducted by the National Rifle Association has a-b- sorbed the attention of fifteen students in regular practice. Inter-school matches and local to'urna- ments have added another incentive to good marksmanship. Affiliation with the .Iunior NRA has given each student an opportunity to work for progressive grades of marksmanship with awards for each degree of excellence. PEP CLUB The High School Pep Club is under the direction of Mr. Moser. The membership was 35 in the year 1938. The purpose of this club is to set new standards for Rapid City High School and to maintain the standards that have already been established by preceding students. So with the cooperation of the student body the cheer leaders hope to .put Rapid City High School at the top of the list for sportsmanship. Oficers President, Elizabeth Kempterg Vice President, Alvina Lindquistg Secretary and Treasurer, Lorraine Nordbyeg Advisor, Leslie Moser. STUDENT POLICE The Student Police is a Student Organization entirely of Senior and Junior High School boys. Over sixteen hundred pupils are dismissed from the school buildings twice a day, Some of these pupils drive cars and park in front of the buildings, others are called for in cars by their parents while -others ride bicycles or walk. These conditions present the greatest traffic problem in the city twice each school day. So the purpose of the Student Patrol is to supervise and regulate this traffic at the school building for each dismissal. Nine boys are on duty five minutes before dismissal for ten minutes duration. There has not been a single accident this school year, which proves that the effort is well worth while. Mr. C. F. Parks supervises the patrol. Pep Club Student Police L Sz L Club T Home Ec'ers 0 . They hope that our library may grow and prosper every year as it has in 1937-38. The Club is supervised by Miss Zeimet. The majo'rity of the compositions studied this year were writ- ten by American composers who wrote expressly for High School Orchestras. Some of the larger works were '6Phaon a symphonic poem by Harold Johnson, Symphonic Miniature No. I also by Johnson, and Exaltation by Coenne. These numbers were used in the annual West River Music Fes- tival held in Rapid City May 7. The membership of the orchestra has grown to fifty members which is probably the largest in the history of Rapid City High School. The orchestra has complete instrumentation and especially an out- standing string section according to the music critics of the Music Festival. Some of the appearances the orchestra has made are Open Night School Program November 9, joint concert with the Choral Club December 5, Radio Broadcast February 4, assembly program and the climax of the year is the Music Festival. A smaller group, the theater orchestra played for the plays and several community affairs. The String Quartette also played on many occasions. The orchestra members are now eligible for awards according to a system worked out by Miss Bachman, Mr. Schwentker, and Mr. Sclmeider. In order to raise money for the expenses incurred by the orchestra during the year, they sponsor- ed a magic show given by Marquis the Magician. Down the center is Coach Cobb lining the fellows out, Rusty,' Mey- ers giving a few pointers and Sam Claim, who had Fall track, operated the score board in Rapid's favor at all the basketball games, and is work- ing with the men this spring on the shot, javelin and dis- cus. The Pep squad captains are shown at a disadvantage in this picture, while on the right are Bobby Moser and Donna Mae Decker who were usually trying to pep up the pep. Lead and In Action 1937 Football Squad l FOOTBALL The 1937 football season opened with just three lettermen returning: Forrest, Glaze and the new- ly elected Captain Elshire. Coach Cobb started his grind for new stars with about 90 reporting. Handicapped with many small and light men the Cobblers started their season with a victory ov- er the Sturgis Scoopers 26 to 0. The second game the Deadwood Bears, who were toppled 13 to 0 in a hard fought battle. The Huron Tigers invaded the Rapid City grounds with a tall, fast, flashy team, which emerged victorious 27 to 0. The Cobblers played their first out of town game at Belle Fourche and overturned the 'LBroncs 26 to O. The second eastern team to meet the Cobblers was the Watertown Arrows, victorious over the Cob- blers the preceeding year, who were sent back home defeated 13 to 6 by the small but determined Rapidian team. The Pierre Governors were met in Pierre on the only eastern trip. The Cobblers could not cross the goal line and returned defeated 6 to 0. A week later the Spearfish Spartans played here, and a scoreless tie was the outcome of the line line play of the Spartans, and the excellent end and line defense of the Cobblers. The Ogalala Indi- ans invaded Rapid City but were toppled 23 to 0. The final game of the season encountered their veteran rival Lead. The Cobblers came on the Lead field determined to show their best, as also did the Lead Gold Diggers. Excellent defense on the part of both teams pictured one of the best games ever to be witnessed by any spectator. Passing at- tacks from the Gold Diggers and fast line plays of the Cobblers still did not advance the ball across either goal line. The game ended a scoreless tie. Rapid City placed Glaze and Elshire on All-Conference this year. Next year should he very suc- cessful with the returning of 16 lettermen. Old faces, new facesg old building, new building-mostly new building. Someone was wrong, either me or the archi- tect-I can't seem to find my classrooms. 6-Our first vacation-and time out for recuperation after a much too strenuous week of concentration QU. Labor day-the pause that refreshes. 17-Vacation again! Did someone make a mistake-or did fate decree that the Lincoln Memorial be unveiled on a schoolday? I8-Cobblers tackle the new football season with enough umph to con- quer Notre -Dame-but no thank you-Sturgis will do for now. Score, 26-6. 24--More umph -Deadwood, our next victim, falls under a 13-0 score. October 1- Puff and Blow Club fDebate club to youj swung into ac- tion with the first call for debaters. 2-Cobblers are topped by East River team. Huron Tigers proved to be too much in an early-season game. 4-A great deal of ucussing and discussing among the teachers. Re- sult: the Pine Cone Staff was picked. 15-Watertown pigskin tossers give local feminine spectators a thrill as they invade our field, only to be defeated, 13-6. 22-Cobblers bow to the Governors on the Pierre field in a close game -score, 6-0. November 5-Divisional declamatory contest at Hot Springs, with three superior ratings and one excellent for Rapid High. Mary .lane Holm will rep- resent us at thestate tournament in oratory, and carry on for R.C.H.S. 9-Usually happy-go-lucky students and teachers all washed behind their ears and entertained proud visiting upapas and mamas at open-house on Tues- day night. Itis surprising just how brilliant and angelic we can be! II-At least they didn't beat us! Gold Diggers tied the Cobblers, O-0, in the Armistice Day game at Lead. 16-I8-With the help of Miss Bachman and Gilbert and Sullivan, enter- prising R.C.H.S. musicians sang their way to success in the opera, The Con- doliersf' November 21-Elmers and Hirams predominated at the R Club barn dance. We didn't know that our school harbored so many hay-seeds until we began to swing it in the barnlike atmosphere of the Coolidge gym. December 4-Local talent 'iruns wild in a Hollywood production, Run- nin' Wild. Rapid High students crash the films in a movie composed entirely of local talent. It was the genuine stuff with a preview and all the fixings! I0-Several clubs joined the International Students Society in a good will party. Let's hope that this new club will be successful enough to warrant continuation next year-we like their parties! 11- Puff and Blowers win an extemporaneous speaking contest and honorable mention in individual speaking at a debate tournament at Pierre. More power for air! to 'em. 17-Dear Mr. Prunty: You made such a good Santa Claus at our Christ- mas dance, we still don't know who you were! 18-R.C.H.S. hits the top again. Mary Jane Holm unrated herself to first place in the state declamatory contest in Wessington Springs. 22-Another happy day with a sad ending! Christmas vacation was her- alded with joy, and basketball season swung into action at Lead with a pre-con- ference defeat of the Cobblers by the Gold Diggers. But just give us time! 29-30-Our new gym was inaugurated with a two day basketball tour- ney to celebrate. Rapid trampled Pierre and Huron, our East River foes. January 3-School again. And are we glad-it's so lonesome with noth- ing to do but go to dances, movies, basketball games, and so on-we're really glad to be back. fSuch hypocriteslj 7-Two tragedies . . . Deadwood made just two too many baskets. We musta lost on accounta the boys didn't have the inspiration of the pep jug- which some enterprising Senior f?J accidentally U1 had the misfortune to break! 21-Truck as is, and someone shine. Of course not, silly, it's just the Big Apple. Where did- I learn it? Why, at the Junior Class dance, of course! 25-27-Another success scored by the .lunior class-this time it's Grow- ing Pains, the class play. Really informal, and did we love it! ln Review February 4-I'll bet that Lead resents the way our Cobblers have been treating the Gold Diggers! At least we'd feel pretty low if they didn't, after the 30-24 victory the Cobblers scored over them on our home floor this fourth day of February, twentieth century. 5-So soon! Lead isn't resentful at all. They just turned the tables on us and won first place in a debate tournament at Spearfish. Our second place trophy was almost as big, though-so we really don't mind too much. 18-We seem to have only one purpose in mind-REVENGE! The R.C. H.S. Hoopsters score another victory over Lead in basketball. 24-25-Cobblers invade Eastern courts and return with one victory and one defeat. Statistics: Huron 36, Rapid City 233 Pierre 17, Rapid City 43. March 4-5-Debate club reaches the quarter-finals in a 29 team tourna- ment in Greeley, Colorado. 18-19-Cobblers defeat Huron at the state basketball tournament at Sioux Falls, and lose to Aberdeen, state champions, in the semi-finals. I8-Student Councilers sponsor a dance in the Coolidge gym with Bruce Vorce and orchestra. Girls' tag dance proved profitable to the lucky boy who drew the lucky girl-do you follow me? 26-Divisional speaking contest today-again Mary Jane Holm crates herself to victory! This time in original oratory. 31-What fools these mortals be-or something! Anyhow, we really en- joyed Marquis the Magician! April 1-Rapid High went Juvenile today! First of all, all loyal Pine Cone supporters wore their placards, and we had what is commonly known as a Tag Day. And then for the perfect ending, everyone wore knee pants and had a swell time at the Commercial Club kid dance. 2-State oratory contest at Brookings-East river speakers proved too much for us! 5-7-We may be just plain folks but we did enjoy the Senior class play. Big Hearted Herbert. 6-No school today! An unexpected vacation because Old Man Winter just refused to leave and broke records with a spring snow storm. It sorta did us good though, gave a lift to those of us who plod wearily through the school year, looking forward to nothing but week-ends and vacations! April 12- A band performed in public tonight. We're really proud of our band, now that we stop to realize it. 15-18-Easter vacation. And we do so appreciate it! After our short va- cation last week, we rather felt in the mood for a few days off of the old grind. 22-The Sophomore class springs to the foreground and demands the at- tention of the public eye. How? Why, because of the classy dance they put on for us tonight. May 2-6-National declam contest in Ohi-o today. lt's just what we've been waiting for-a chance for Mary .lane to show them what we can produce out here in the wild and wooly west. 7-Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The annual west river music festival brought musicians from far and near UD t-o Rapid' City. 12-Something to write home about. Oh, for the life of a high school student! Glamour and bright lights-yes, I am talking about the prom. But the glamour definitely dwindled when we awoke to the morning sun Fri-day and realized that school still begins at 8:30. 14-Regional track meet at Hot Springs today. 18-Another track meet again, so soon! They're sorta stacking up on us, but then we have the Senior picnic to dilute the seriousness of the occasion f?J. 22-Baccalaureate services were today. As June approaches we begin to realize more and more just how final graduation is. 23+Class day! We Seniors feel so privileged-wonder if we're extra special or do the Seniors always get treated this way! 28-Tears and smiles. Commencement and diplomas. Memories and . . . I'm really getting too sentimental. Well, I'll be seeing all of you again next year. And didn't the Seniors look aloof and intellectual in their caps and gowns? , 'X ,o 1 .7 l , , , .. Yes, my dears, the worthy class of 1938 is at last leaving this fond fold- we were beginning to think that school lasts forever. Now we have been sadly disil- lusioned, and our gay and untrampled spirits are broken tif not forever, at least for today and tomorrowf. How you will miss us. Yes, how you will miss us. The huge gap we leave will be hard to fill for many a year. At least that is something to remember. If you don't remember us for our good deeds, you'll remember us for our bad, but at least, you'll remember us. Small in size, but dynamic, that's us. Some people will be glad to get rid of us, but they are only the unappreciative types. W'ho in their right mind would want to get rid of the bestest little rule break- ers in the worldf' After all, variety is the spice of life. This yearis Pine Cone Staff has tried to present school life as we see it. lt's too bad there is a cutting room which cuts all the beautiful, juicy bits of scandal that twen- ty people are able to dig up. Perhaps, tho, everything turns out for the best. We would never want anything like a libel suit on our hands. How humiliating that would be! After all, this class has to keep up the good work it has done as an example for all the underclassmen. What they don't know won't hurt them. But really, the four years spent at this school have bee11 very profitable and en- joyable years, and one cannot help but be sorry when we say, Farewell, dear old R. C.H.S. May each year be better than the preceding one. There was a young lady in high school Who said, Cee! I'11 be glad to leave my school! But now she's in tears And she's filled with great fears For how will she live without high school? Mary Ruth Morse, Our Sponsors Without the following it would be impossible for the Senior Class to publish this yearbook. Although a certain number of subscriptions must be secured, the financial outlay is such that advertising must be used to complete the budget. The public-spirited business men have been more than willing to respond in soliciting the liberal patronage and good will Of the Student body. Not only this year, but in the past years, they have responded, and taken an interest in the Pine Cone. To these public-spirited business men, the C1255 Of 1938 iS grateful- Please accept our thanks. We feel sure that the Students will keep YOU in milld in their patronage. ATTORNEYS Bangs and Rudesill Philip and Leedom i Sieler T. B. Thorson Williams and Sweet Wilson, .lohn D.
