OUR HERITAGE Brownell In 1880 the first school dis- trict, called the Vonsburg Dis- trict, was organized and a sod school house was built one and one-half mile from the present city of Brownell. 1. In 1881 the Danby school district was organized 2 miles west and 5 south of Brownell. 2. From 1902 to 1937 the two story frame building with red tin covering served the Brownell District. In 1912 one year of high school was started. The building was torn down in 1937. 3. In 1888 the first school in the city limits of Brownell was built. The highest number of pupils for one year was 54. The building burned about 1901. 4. About 1912 we find an early girls basketball team. Pictured are Blanche Haynes, Mary Wyman. Viola Green, Ruby Mus- selman, Emma McCrary, and Ida Philpot. 5. In 1921 a fine brick high school was built. It served the district through the 1959-60 school year. In the spring of 1960 it was unified with Ransom Dis- trict 302 and the building was used as a grade school until the grade students were moved to Ransom in 1968. 6. In 1922 domestic science - a food's course - and sewing were offered for the first time. Pic- tured in domestic science are Miss Ella Moriarty, teacher, Ruth Stull, Halcie Barnett, Fern Barnett, Leona Sawyer, Geneva Copeman and Beulah McCurdy. 7. In the fall of 1937 a similar grade school to the one pictured was built. It burned before the school term was out and was replaced by this three-room grade school at Brownell. Much of the above information and pictures were taken from pp.6-8, 85 Year History of Brow- nell Kansas by Dove Stull Walker. 1972. 2
