Pic- tured in domestic science are Miss Ella Moriarty, teacher, Ruth Stull, Halcie Barnett, Fern Barnett, Leona Sawyer, Geneva Copeman and Beulah McCurdy. 7. In the fall of 1937 a similar grade school to the one pictured was built. It burned before the school term was out and was replaced by this three-room grade school at Brownell. It is still being used. 2. In 1902 a two story stone structure, called the Grammar Room was built on the east edge of the present grade school ground. As school closes, Mrs. Eun- ice Gibson will be saying goodbye to a way of life she has known for 26 years. This will be the last inven- tory, the last time to work with our children. When asked what she liked about teaching, she replied, helping kids. She now plans to work on crafts, do a bit of travel- ing , and do some of those things she couldn't while teaching. You have our very best wishes as you retire, Mrs. Gibson - The Annual Staff THE COLONISTS ADMINISTRATION Board Finalizes New Shop One of the main projects during this year has been the Shop Building Program. The original building plans were completed last fall. Due to the cost of the project, as indicated by the bids received, some revisions were made in the building plans and final contracts for construction were approved in March. This added educational facility of 80 feet by 120 feet will greatly improve the condition and space available for a good industrial program. 2. 3. 50 5. 1. The Eighth Grade is probably the most memorable of all, so far. Three new classes are intro- duced - shop, home ec., and American history, along with the regulars, English, science, math, and band or vocal. Stu- dents get an opportunity to expe- rience working in a concession stand during the Junior High girls’ volleyball tournament. Students are also introduced to the world of physics and the metric system. The units on the invertebrates and vertebrates generate the most interest as students try their skill at dissection work and ana- tomical studies of various ani- mals. In the picture, students are involved in the study of anatomy of a lower invertebrate, the earthworm. 67 Barbara Landwehr Duane Luetters Susan McDonald Russel Nutile Valerie Nuttle 13 COLONIES Colony of'82 Mark Dinges Kevin Flax Kim Harris Troy Haug Brent Huxman James Pfaff Susan Pfaff Edwin Rauch Gina Rufenacht Gary Sargent 68 Shenna Siek, Doug Storer, Mark Ummel, Bonita Zimmerman, Kelly Zordel, Mr. Ray Whipple The Sixth grade had many interesting topics in sci- ence. They learned about the simple machines - levers, pulleys, and wheels. A stethoscope was used to allow them to listen to their hearts, and other devices were used for taking blood pressures and looking into their ears, eyes, and throats. The class was involved in a basketball Intramural Tournament. The crowds attracted weren't large, but everyone had fun. Gary Sargent, Bonita Zimmerman, and Kelley Zor- del participated in the Conservation Essay Contest, with Gary Sargent placing second. Near the end of the year the sixth grade presented their second play production saluting the Bicentennial. The writing, acting, and singing of the play were done by the sixth graders themselves. 13 COLONIES Colony of '83 Fifth grade did a variety of things this year. Math and spelling were individualized so that each student could learn at his own rate. Some interesting living matter studied were frogs, mealworms, isopods, crickets, and tulips. To prepare for leadership each student had a chance to be an officer during the weekly class meet- ings that were held. Films and slides made an enjoyable break in geography and health. The study units may also be used on occasion where a student may just have the need to be alone to think or read a book. 71 13 COLONIES Colony of '86 Probably the most interesting highlight for the Second Grade was the new Science Kits that were purchased for the class- rooms. The children seemed to have enjoyed doing the few experiments we have done and are anxiously looking forward to getting more involved with other experiments. Filmstrips to go with their sci- ence. health, and social studies classes were also frequently used to help impress upon their minds the subject matter that was being studied. Various math, reading, and phonics games were available for their individual or small group use. Many of these materials were checked out from the Instructional Materials Center in Dodge City. This book helps rekindle the fond memories of the past year. A special thanks is given to our communities, students, and teachers for their cooperation. Also we would like to recognize Mrs. Crosswhite, and Mr. Strecker who donated a lot of valuable time and effort; they also put up with a lot of headaches. Without this, our book could not be a suc- cess. - Mark Horchem, Editor We Celebrate the Past the spirit of seventy I here was an enormous force which strengthened the colonies, which exists today, and which has carried America through its great history. That force is known to us all to be the Spirit of 76. ” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the know!- edge that one man's freedom is more important than anything else on earth. li is the SPIRIT OF OPTI- MISM of knowing that we can always make things better — of working only for the best, and expecting only the best. ffi ■ ■ v2' V2 Ly— r'r'ZH —vr?lt - r Ji + Is ? iZ 6 ’ •iSSgSsp sm1tZ+- j . George Washington I homas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton James Madison John Hancock It is the SPIRIT OF YD V7DI ALISM — acknowledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn from the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SP1NIT OF ’76” was, and is, many things, each of which has been a building block of our national greatness. Our country grew on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will be there to guide us and keep us strong. 1976 ★ Ttr rr V i v‘ X - • jvy!t V « v w''- ' C • • ': ’-' .' ; • .’ - 1. ' ' -i ' • - .- .
