It had more than just the usual home- coming rivalry and spirit because it was also our last league game. By deafeating Lenora, we would become the undefeated Cheyenne Conference League Champions. Because of the ice and mud, it was im- possible to parade the floats and queen can- didates around the football field. The floats that didn't get stuck paraded behind the grandstand. The queen candidates were walked onto the field by their escorts. Marilyn Wyman was crowned queen by foot- ball captain Dave Albers, who shook her hand. Attendants were Kathy Weeks and Raymond Simon, Robynn Ridenour and Steve Potter. After the crowning ceremonies, the game got under way with a bang when we made a touchdown on an intercepted pass. The final score was 16 to 0 in our favor. A dance was held at the Legion Hall from ten to one o'clock with music provided byFyre. First place float, pictured at the top, was sponsored by Hi-Way 4 and City Cafe and had for its theme, Here We Are and Here We Stay. Tying for second place were the floats, Little Strokes Fell Great Oaks sponsored by Humburg's and John Scherzinger and To Be or Not To Be” sponsored by Shellenberger Insurance and The First State Bank. Fourth place, pic- tured at center, was entitled We Have Not Yet Begun to Fight and was sponsored by Ransom Motors and Geyers Sundries. The Smell of Success Is Never Too Sweet was sponsored by Ransom Co-op. They have brought home four first-place trophies from the Ellis and Jetmore Invitationals, Scott City Relays, and Cheyenne Con- ference track meet, as well as winning the relay at State setting a new state record of 3:37.3. Front Row: Norbert Flax Randy Oliver Vernon Flax Raymond Simon Jim Kenworthy. The team was involved in eleven track meets; at three meets they placed fourth, at four meets the team placed third, at three meets the team placed second, and the last one, the State Track Meet at Wichita, the team won it in class 1A. Trophies that were brought home: State Indoor, second place; Quinter, second place; Cheyenne Conference, third place; State Track Meet, first place. An outstanding trackman, Nolan Cromwell (at right), has bro- ken four Ransom High track records this year: long jump 21'7 , high jump 6'1”, high hurdles 14.9, and 440 yard dash 48.9, which ties the state record. Other school records set were by Randy Oliver, 2 mile run in 11:06.5, and Vernon Flax, 100 yard dash in 10.1. 22 Baseball Has Final Season Back Row: Coach Jon Nuttle, Bob Walker, Eugene Flax, Robert Schreiber, John Walker, Gene Wierman, Terry Weeks. Front Row: Alan Mishler, Mike Giess, Rob Giess, Gary Horchem, Mark Kraus, and Allen Zordel. If Coach Nuttle looks a little sad, it isbecausethis will be Ransom's last year of baseball. The school board reached this decision after considering the following: the limited number of boys in spring sports, the number of class interruptions due to two sports, the weather during spring, the fact that baseball is not a league sport, the competition of two coaches for the same boys, the de- cline in number of schools playing baseball, and an op- portunity is given the boys to play baseball in the summer. Producing Annual Is Hard Work What does it take to put out an annual? It takes hours and hours of good hard thinking and hours of plain work. Pictured below are the girls who spent much of their time dreaming up novel ways of present- ing the school's story. At the left are the boys who elected to take sixth hour to work on the annual. They performed many of the routine tasks and aided greatly in the scheduling and in the taking of the school pictures. Standing: Pat Crosswhite, Advisor; Susan Sargent, Photographer. On the decorated wall were the words A TIME FOR US and a cou- ple's silhouettes. Purple, green, pink, and yellow crepe streamers formed a ceiling and archways while the wallpaper covered the walls. There was a white summerhouse with roses growing up around it and two rosebushes in front of it. In- side, there was a birdbath upon which some love birds perched. This was the setting for A TIME FORUS. The banquet consisted of punch, salad, ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, buttered corn, Texas toast, and strawberry shortcake. The centerpieces for the tables were candles in gold glass globes covered by a coarse white nylon netting. The Junior class president, Robert Simon, welcomed everyone, then Gary Horchem say A TIME FOR US. 64 Pictured at the top are Lavern Squier and Susan Sargent. Directly above are Bob Walker and Taa Klitzke. Seated at the head table were Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hoch, Junior class sponsor; Mr. and Mrs. Doug Spillman, Junior class sponsor; Robert Simon, Junior class president; Jeb Klitzke, Senior class president; Reverend and Mrs. Mc- Fall; and Mr. and Mrs. Jon Nuttle, Junior class sponsor. Pictured at the center left are Robert Schreiber, Susan Wiedeman, Kervin Brun- gardt, and Shirley Carter as they enjoy the banquet. The dance started at nine o'clock. The band was the four piece Hot Summer Days of Hutchinson. Their music was enjoyed by all, as even the teachers danced. The dance ended at twelve o'clock. A time to win, a time to almost win, and a time to lose. A time to dream and have them come true and a time of disappointment when things didn't work out as you wanted them to. These things all happened at RHS this year, plus many, many more. The Longhorn staff hopes that they recorded the year in such a way as to bring back many potent memories of the year. Now it is time to say good-bye as the last page of the annual is laid out and ready to be sent to the publishing company. We would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Crosswhite for her patience, help, and guidance, because we couldn't have published this book without her. We also wish to thank our advertisers, subscribers, and all of those who made this publication possible. Shirley Carter, Editor
