Paul Buxton - Editor, Mrs. Crosswhite - Annual Advisor. Chet Halbleib - Sports Editor, Carolyn Luetters - Activities Editor. Nancy Turner - Classes Editor. Foreword The Longhorn staff of 1965 sincerely hopes that this edition of the Longhorn gives an ac- curate history of the school's activities in the year of 1965. —Yearbook Editor 17 Mile The Ransom High School was built in 1916. In 1926 the gymnasium and the rooms above it were added. Arnold High School and Ransom High School were combined in 1961. Joint District No. 21 was formed in 1962 when Brownell consolidated with Ransom and Arnold. The Arnold school wasbuiltinl923. it served the dual purpose of a high school and a grade school. Ransom’s grade school was built in 1953. Another change took place in 1962 when the first four grades were combined at Ransom and the upper four grades went to Arnold’s school. Brownell’s high school, which is now being used as a grade school, was built in 1921. WWW Campus RANSOM GRADE SCHOOL—1953 THE OLD AND THE NEW Entering the familiar doorway, former students note immediately there is something new about high school this year. Walking into the old music room, they find it is now the math room. In class they are pleasantly surprised to find new programmed text-workbooks, a new way of teaching math, which enables each stu- dent to progress just as rapidly as he is capable of doing. To make room for urgently needed class space the vocal part of the music department moved to the gymnasium; the band remained in the band room. New uniforms helped band members feel a little prouder to belong to Ransom High School Band. The old math room became the new language room with both Spanish I and II offered this year. The new language laboratory provides individual listening stations, so that students may be given the individual instruction they need. The business department expanded its curricu- lum, offering economics, business law, business ma- chines and office practice. Several new business machines had been purchased to make possible the new courses. Shop offerings have been enlarged by offering open shop classes which permits more than one grade level of students to work together by the use of the project method of teaching. The vocational guidance counselor is on hand to assist students select suitable courses of study to guide them toward their life’s work. It is an old building, but there is a new spirit. Better methods of teaching and new equipment plus vocational guidance equal a better Ransom High School. Superintendent MR. The Ransom High School Band proudly sported new band uniforms this year for the first time in twenty-five years. The new uniforms were made so that they could be worn for marching and concert wear. The marching uniform is black, trimmed with red and white with a red longhorn accenting the back of the uniform: a red plume adds color to the hat. For con- cert purposes the uniform has the dignity of tails. The uniform is also black, trimmed with gold and white, with a red cummer- bund and a bow tie. F NANCY KLITZKE Homecoming The Homecoming Queen of 1964-65, Miss Claudia Nuttle. was crowned by Terry Ohle- meier, football captain, on October 9, at the homecoming game with Holyrood. Kay Shellenberger, Judy Ryan, and Kim Buxton were the queen's attendants, and they were escorted by the co-captains, Butch Haug. Ron Tillitson, and Paul Buxton. After her coronation, the queen and her attendants watched the remainder of the game from a beautifully decorated platform on the side lines. 46 The first place trophy was won by the float sponsored by RANSOM MOTORS. The theme of the float was Our Solo Flight to Victory. It was artistically designed and decorated beautifully with turquoise and sil- ver colors. The second place trophy went to HARKNESS INSURANCE. A dance was held in the VFW Hall immedi- ately after the game for all the high school students and the alumni. The music was furnished by the Four Solos, a dance band from Hays, Kansas. It was enjoyed by everyone there. . . . we ate Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was held on Satur- day, May 15, 1965, at 6:30 p. m.. and it was centered a around the theme, In the Misty Moonlight. The Banquet was held at the VFW Hall. The tables were decorated very tastefully with light blue covering and blue candles softly misted with blue angel hair. Small paths of silver glitter surrounded the miniature wishing well center pieces. Father Lieunissen gave the prayer. After a delicious meal, that was served by the sophomores and was eaten by candlelight to soft background music, the program continued with the junior class president, Mike Berry, giving the wel- come, and the senior class president, Carolyn Luetters re- sponding. The speaker for the evening was John Mishler. The banquet was romantically ended with Dana Mai singing the theme song, In the Misty Moonlight. The Prom was held in the high school gym with a dance band, the Renegades, furnishing the music. As the people entered the gym through a large trellis stuffed with pink roses, they saw a blue star filled sky that was softly draped around a large gold star in the center. A soft blue light was on a star covered stairway that led up to the misty moon surrounded by clouds of angel hair. The east wall was covered in dark blue with In the Misty Moonlight in large glittering letters. A wishing well, that was filled with blue water and surrounded by a sand path and garden chair, was given a shadowing effect by a light that was placed behind it. The stage was decor- ated with blue streamers and glittering letters that spelled out Junior-Senior Prom, ’65. A very romantic scene was cre- ated bythe beautiful decorations, and many compliments were received. . . . we entered . . . we wished . . . and we admired the stairway. The SENIOR CLASS presented THE MAGIC TOUCH May 5-6. 1965 The Magic Touch , a three-act mystery-com- edy. took place in the Braddock's home, which was to be the location of the annual Culture Club Style Show. After the most important ladies in town saw the livingroom of the Braddock’s home filled with wet laundry, all sorts of junk, and the messiest and dirtiest group of people, namely Mrs. Braddock's daughter, Bobbette, and her male friends, the foot- ball team, they began to wonder if they should have it there or not. But after Bobbette disappeared and was found, everything turned out fine. The style show was a great success and Bobbette won first prize as a model. CAST Jnell S. Terry O. Paul B. Claudia N. With his superior from the Department of Interior coming to inspect the place, all sorts of unrealistic occurrences began to happen. Just as the superior appeared, a football game was taking place in the lobby of the headquarters, and the dignified superior ended up with the seat of his pants caught at the end of a fishing pole. Besides all of this, a ghost was seen by several members of the family, and the others not seeing the ghost thought the family was crazy. But after a thorough investi- gation, everything turned out all right. HINDSHAW'S REFRIGERATION ELECTRIC SERVICE We sell the best and service the rest WaKeeney, Kansas CAST Jeanette E. Dana M.
