' I I I : I : f U x S ,CWA X fe 'K Al' lx EDUMENTAL JOURNEY ln August of 1951 we set forth on a long Journey that was to take us four years to complete There were stxteen members tn our crew namely .T 1m Kunce Mona Boehme Pat Horton Gene Hofbauer Carol Swanson Elsre Hasler Joann Moser Don Plotner Juamta Johnson Btlly Kllhoffer Charles Bosttc Alberta Berqu1st Betty Brewmgton Wanda Osborn Don Wolfe and Herbert Theesfeld Toward the end of the f1rst month of our Journey we had a crew meettng and elected J rm Kunce as our head man and Juamta Johnson as h1s assrstant Carol Swanson was p1cked to keep the mtnutes of our meettngs and Els1e Hasler kept track of the money that we accumulated Mrs Porter and Mrs Haegle were appo1nted as overseers Then Phyll1s Olxphant a transfer from Danvrlle Jomed our crew wh1ch numbered us seventeen Soon we dectded we had better send three people to Student Counctl The three we chose were Bllly Ktlhoffer Joann Moser and Gene Hofbauer As tt IS a custom, the senrors declded that before we got too far on our Journey we should be 1mt1ated Then Juan1ta Johnson left us to resume her school days at Waco Texas Just a httle later we lost Charles Bosnc another of our crew who dropped out to go to Cathn H1gh School We now had a membersh1p of ftfteen We had pretty smooth gomg unul May 25 when all four classes had a Jomt p1cn1c at Starved Rock wh1ch chmaxed our Journey for three months When we resumed tn September of 1952 we were wtthout the servrces of Btlly K1lhoffer and Don Plotner leavmg us thtrteen members As our offtcers ran out we thought that we had better hold an elect1on We had a crew meetmg and elected J1m Kunce Prestdent and Carol Swanson as h1s ass1stant Joann Moser was chosen to keep the mtnutes of the crew meetxngs durmg the second year of our Journey EISIB Hasler was prcked to keep the money that was collected on the tr1p Mr Pence and M1ss Greer were the overseers of our crew thrs year After a few months of Journeymg we lost one member Phyllts Ohphant who dropped out to go to work tn Danvrlle At another crew meetmg a suggestxon was brought up by one of the gang that we agam send three members to Student Counctl They were Mona Boehme Gene Hofbauer and Wanda Osborn Everythmg went smoothly on the Journey unt11May when we had another reumon Th1s t1me lt was held at Twm Lakes Parts And agaln everyone took a three month vacatxon As all of us assembled for our thtrd year we decrded to contmue our Journey Th1s t1me we elected Gene Hofbauer as our Prestdent Mona Boehme as out Asslstant Wanda Osborn wrote up the mrnutes of our crew meetlngs and Els1e Hasler agatn kept track of the money We sent Herb Theesfeld Carol Swanson and Joann Moser to Student Counctl Alven Stevens and Stuart X A fl' N sn H ,f J a t We 551227 Vaughan jomed our crew thxs year Alven came from Btsmarck Hrgh behool and Stuart came from Beaver Dam W1scons1n Also Joann Gudeman, from Malta I-hgh School Jomed us And adam we lost a member Don Wolfe Th1s year was to be a very busy one for us as we had to prepare for the ,Tumor Semor Prom tn the Spnng The prom was held May 12 1954 1n the Urbana Lmcoln Hotel and was a very f1ne affaxr Then we had our reun1on whxch was held at Parxs agam and followed xt w1th another three months vaca t1on We assembled m September for a very xmportant year as lf IS supposed to be our last Two new members Beverly Ntsewarner and Vlrgll Baker were added to the crew We elected Jlm Kunce to head our class Vlfgll Baker was to ass1st h1m Wanda Osborn kept the mxnutes Elsle Hasler was to keep traek of the money for the fourth year 1n Hofbauer Alven Stevens and Pat Horton Of our whole crew Pat Horton Mona Boehme and Jlm Kunce are the only ones who have been together from the tlme we started rn flrst grade Pubhshmg the Broadcaster once every srx weeks and also puttlng out the year book and everythmg that goes w1th xt were to make th1s our bus1est year Then we had Class N1ght Bac calaureate and graduatlon to look forward to Agaln 1n the sprxng w111 meet Wllh the rest of the class for our last Reumon 6, ll 5 5757? 1 f A KZJCKZF ff Z x ll Q l 'ill -- M if ,V ix if A K X, It Xf 4 ff f fly ' Q fl ! ek! Nease. sy The Student Council is made up of three members from each class and Mr. Staley as our advisor. This year we have been in charge of the coke machine and the pop sales at each home basketball game. A Christmas party was held by the Student Council which everyone enjoyed. We will also have charge of the all School Picnic which is held the last day of school. From the money which we have earned we purchased a phonograph for the school to use for dances, parties, and many other occasions. A mixed chorus was organized again this year after having, been discontinued a few years ago. The chorus made its first appearance at the Christmas Vespers. The Girls' Glee Club performed at the two concerts and went to contest. Two Girls' Octettes and a Mixed Octette also made several appearances during the year. ACU IUC In home CCODOITHCS The Homemaking program deals mainly with Food Preparation and Clothing Construction about Home and Family Life. Also included in the program are units on Grooming, Child care, Housing and Home Decoration, Safety and Laundering. There are 33 girls enrolled in the three classes, All of these girls are members of the F.H.A. and 14 other girls in the school. F,H.A. has been quite active this year with a social activity and a money making project each month in addition to the regular monthly business scheduled during the activity period on the 3rd, Thursday of SCIENCE As you know every subject offered in high school is offered for a purpose and that purpose is to make you a better person. Science and math courses in their own way aid in your mental growth. Mathematics helps by developing your thinking and reasoning ability. Through the study of Algebra and Geometry you are able to meet problems in adult life and to solve them with the aid of your own initiative. The science courses acquaint you with the world in which we live through the study of the laws of the universe and how these laws function to govern our every day lives. each month. ACI! COMMERCIAL In the Commercial Department, General Business is offered to the Freshman class, as an introductory business subject. Typing I and Bookkeeping for the Juniors and Seniors, Shorthand and Advanced Typing for the Seniors. The school paper THE BROADCASTER is mimeographed each month by the Advanced Typing class. This gives opportunity for cooperation among the students and for proficiency and responsibility in making and mime- graphing the paper. The girls help with jobs that come in such as making tickets, programs, program booklets, all the typing and arrangement for our annual THE MIRROR. This helps to make business more important and meaningful to the students. We want to stress a cooperative attitude through good work habits the sharing of responsibility and high standards of performance in commercial work. ENGLISH The pervasive purpose of the English courses is to promote personality development in all its phases. The literature, by telling us of the experiences of others, suggests to us possible solutions to our own problems. We also learn to appreciate literature by studying what qualities are necessary to make it beautiful and worthwhile. Our workbooks are intended to help us gain power in the use of our language. They do this by offering us lessons in grammatical form and writing structure. The workbooks also furnish us with background material to use in becoming more mature socially. We role-play such things as job interviews, introductions, radio programs and giving directions, and also learn to tell jokes to the best advantage. Both social and business letter writing play an important part in our English work. We also make attempts to express our emotions and ideas through the use of original writing. Movies such as MACBETH and TREASURE ISLAND furnish us with much to learn and enjoy visually. Our new tape recorder is helpful in improving our oral assignments.
