Up I , the first county seat Perhaps westemers in the early days were more dependent on the railroad than on any other thing. True, many came to the west before the iron horse did , but real progress depended on the rail- road , which brought in supplies of all kinds - foodstuff, medicines materials for households and ranches - and the railroad carried the wool, mohair, livestock, and other products to market. In fact, the railroad was so important that if it did not come to the town, the town came to it. That is how Our Town, Rankin, came to be. In 1911 the Pan- handle and Santa Fe Railroad came through Upton County, but it missed Upland, then the county seat. ,Upland had a courthouse, a jail, a general store, built and operated by I. R. Johnson in 1900. But the railroad missed herp therefore, the town, its name changed to Rankin, named for F. E. Rankin, donor of the townsite, came to the railroad. On this page are the remains of Upland, two crumbling buildings where graduating seniors and young couples scribble their names for posterity.
