This Is Our Town . its history is written in the wind - the sand, scorched earth , scrubby mesquite, cacti, and short grass. A Old-timers say, It never rains until the wind stops blowing , and the wind never stops blowing until it rains. Like all West Texas' towns, the wind comes to Our Town, and in a real sense its history is written in the wind - and in the sand, parched earth, flat -top mountains, scrubby mesquite, cacti, and short grass. Sometimes when the dry spells turn into long droughts, passersby and newcomers may ask, as did the poet, God, is not this your land? But even long ago the old -timers knew - that when the wind blew , the windmills pumped from the underground streams sparkling water for household and livestock. Later they learned that black gold flowed beneath the land also. But the most valuable things of Our Town, then and now, are not the water, the livestock, nor the black gold. The most valuable things of all are the solid citizens who, since long ago, have learned to be considerate of other folk who come their way. Whether, as in the past, it was to welcome dust-weary travelers going farther west to share a cold dipper of water from a well such as the one above or to insist that the folks come in for a bite to eat and to rest a spell or whether, as today, it is to carry food to a sick neighbor or to repair his fence, Our Town 's people have maintained that pioneer spirit of deep concern for the welfare of their fellow- men.
