Our Town, being built as it is down the sides of a plateau that gradually slopes down in creases and then sort of spreads out on the basin floor, is difficult to photograph all at once. So, as you travel through this book, you 'll see snapshots of other parts of Rankin and the sur- rounding countryside that you can't see or recognize from the end -sheet photograph. Of course, we won 't be able to show every part of Our Town and its beautiful semi-arid countryside. For instance, if we were to see Mr. and Mrs. Racoon and cute family about to cross the Crane Highway at midnight again, chances are we wouldn't have our camera. Neither did we have our camera the day that big buck and two does crossed the Midland Highway and gracefully leaped the pasture fence. It is not likely that we will be able to get a picture of these wild turkeys that roost not too far from the city limits. We probably won't catch that sun quietly sinking into those fluffy grey clouds hovering above King Mountain either. Nor is it likely that we will get a picture of everybody's own favorite spot or person. We '11 just do the best we can and apologize to the rest of you folks. We of the Red Devil Annual staff hope you enjoy looking at Our Town as we see it - the kids, some old folks, the countryside, the local drugstore, and . . . W, O, ADAMS One of the most important parts of a well- organized, properly operated school system is business management. Rankin Independent Schools are fortunate to have an extremely ef- ficient business manager, Mr. W, O, Adams, Mr. Adams knows the business end of our public schools well: and if an interested school patron wishes any information pertaining to the finan- cial end of the school, all he has to do is con- fer with Mr. Adams. Always genuinely inter- ested in his school, he considers it a real privilege to talk to others about Rankin schools. SECRETARY: MRS, MARGARET TIEMANN Mrs. Tiemann, the Tax Office Secretary, is such a friendly, helpful person until she makes paying taxes almost a pleasure - especially when folks know it goes to their excellent pub- lic schools to help educate the youth of Rankin Independent School District. Rankin School Cafeteria Stajj' Thanks to an excellent cafeteria staff who knows how to prepare scrumptious lunches that are properly balanced as well, Rankin School Cafeteria is a wonderful place to eat. A Old-timers say, It never rains until the wind stops blowing , and the wind never stops blowing until it rains. Like all West Texas' towns, the wind comes to Our Town, and in a real sense its history is written in the wind - and in the sand, parched earth, flat -top mountains, scrubby mesquite, cacti, and short grass. Sometimes when the dry spells turn into long droughts, passersby and newcomers may ask, as did the poet, God, is not this your land? But even long ago the old -timers knew - that when the wind blew , the windmills pumped from the underground streams sparkling water for household and livestock. Later they learned that black gold flowed beneath the land also. But the most valuable things of Our Town, then and now, are not the water, the livestock, nor the black gold. The most valuable things of all are the solid citizens who, since long ago, have learned to be considerate of other folk who come their way. Whether, as in the past, it was to welcome dust-weary travelers going farther west to share a cold dipper of water from a well such as the one above or to insist that the folks come in for a bite to eat and to rest a spell or whether, as today, it is to carry food to a sick neighbor or to repair his fence, Our Town 's people have maintained that pioneer spirit of deep concern for the welfare of their fellow- men. True, many came to the west before the iron horse did , but real progress depended on the rail- road , which brought in supplies of all kinds - foodstuff, medicines materials for households and ranches - and the railroad carried the wool, mohair, livestock, and other products to market. In fact, the railroad was so important that if it did not come to the town, the town came to it. That is how Our Town, Rankin, came to be. In 1911 the Pan- handle and Santa Fe Railroad came through Upton County, but it missed Upland, then the county seat. ,Upland had a courthouse, a jail, a general store, built and operated by I. R. Johnson in 1900. But the railroad missed herp therefore, the town, its name changed to Rankin, named for F. E. Rankin, donor of the townsite, came to the railroad. On this page are the remains of Upland, two crumbling buildings where graduating seniors and young couples scribble their names for posterity. Everyone but one person won their Erst round of playg however, they were beaten in the second. That was the only practice meet they had before the district meet. They played hard and diligently, but only two made the semi- inals before they were beaten. Mrs. Elva Nell Dupriest is such an efficient sec- retary that she does double duty. She acts as sec- retary to both Mr. Walker, junior high principal, and Mr. Hughes, elementary principal. Junior high days are days of experimentation, exploration, of each searching for his own niche in school and in life. In many ways these are the most important years - years when faculty, friends, and family can lend helpful hands to aid junior high boys and girls in their struggles to become young men and young ladies. To the eighth graders this is the year when they get to be the real leaders of their school. But, of course, they must look forward to starting at the bottom once again the next year in high school.
