While the embarked aircraft are the primary means of defense, the dual purpose gun battery provides backup for them. The five-inch guns provide protection against close-in hostile air or surface raids. As part of their duties, they test, operate, clean, lubricate, inspect, adjust and calibrate Hre control units.
